Beit known that I, THOMAS C. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Firearms; and I do hereby dec are the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure l, a broken view, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical longitudinal section, of a gun constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a detached view in rear elevation of the compound friction-brake.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of firearms having non-recoiling barrels and balanced breech-blocks, the object being to provide the breech-block of such an arm with ai simple and effective frictionbrake for reducing the shock of recoil.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a firearm having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown I employ a compound friction-brake composed of two split conical sleeves 2 and 3, arranged one within the other, so that their slots 2a and 33 do not register. This compound friction-brake is mounted or cles )ed upon the forward end of a stationary rod 4, the rear end of which is screwed into a supporting-sleeve 5, the forward end of which is screwed into the rear end of the gun-frame 6. The friction-brake itself is located, as shown, in a conical brake-chamber 7, formed in the rear end of an arm or extension 8, extending rearwardly from the balanced breech-block 9 and formed with a longitudinal passage 8, which receives the said rod and which opens at its rear end into the said chamber 7. The said rod 4 is encircled by a breech-block-closing spring l0, the forward end of which Aimpinges against a washer 11, placed against the rear end of the compound friction-brake. At the time of recoil the tapering walls of the chamber 7 compress and contract the sleeves 2 and 3 so that the former still more closely hugs the rod 4 and the Thus contracted the V sleeves are pushed back over the rod, the friction thus evelo ed materially assisting in reducing the shodir of recoil by virtuallyT supplementing the weight of the breech-block 9 and reinforcing the spring 4, which returns the breech-block to its closed position after recoil. During this return or forward movement of thc breech-block the sleeves 2 and 3 expand and more or less, if not entirely, release their hold upon the rod '4. The non-recoiling barrel l2 is screwed in the usual manner into the gun frame or receiver 6, which is furnished, as shown, with a removable boX- inagazine 13 5 but these and other details will vary according to circumstances.
It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes from the construction herein shown and described may he made. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself thereto, but hold myself at liberty to make such departures therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. Thus in place of a compound friction-brake I might employ a friction-brake consisting oi' a single conical sleeve arranged to grip the rod 4. This is too obvious to call for illustration or further description.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a gun, the combination with the frame thereof, of a balanced breechblock having a rearward extension containing a brake-chamber, astationary rod supported at its rear end by the said frame, a friction-brake located in the said chamber and coasting with the said rod to retard thc opening movement of the block and so reduce the shock of recoil.
2. In a gun, the combination with the frame thereof, of a balanced breech block having a friction-brake chamber, a sleeve secured by its forward end in the rear end of the said frame and extending rearwardly therefrom, a rod mounted at its rear end in the rear end of the said cylinder, a breechblock-closing spring located in the said sleeve and encircling the said rod, and a frictionbrake located in the said chamber and coacting with the said rod to retard the opening movement of the block and so reduce the shock of recoil.
