To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ADAM FRENZEL, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident ofvWausau, in the county of Marathon and 'State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Train-Pipe Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple, economical, automatic train pipe couplings for railway-brakes; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a cen# tral. longitudinal section view of a train-pipe coupling in accordance with my invention and fragments of coupled cars to which sections of said pipecoupling are connected; Fig. 2, a part y-sectional view of the trainpipe coupling having the sections thereof disconnected; Fig. 3, a transverse section view indicated by lines 3 3 in Fig. 1; and Fig.
4, a plan view of a portion of one ofthe coup' ling-sectionsfpartly in section, on line l in said Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a rod sup ortedin depending lugs b of draw-bar gui es of a` railway-car. The rod also engages upwardly-extending lugsv c d of a hanger B, the rod-aperture in the forward lug c being vertically elongated to permit u Ward tilt of the hanger. The forward end o the hanger is provided with an annular openin transverse grooves e within the conlines o, the o ening, and an annular flange f in rear of sai o ening. Bolted or otherwise suitably secure to the front of the han er or made integral' therewith is a beveled co lar g, that registers with the opening aforesaidv and is provided with transverse inner grooves'h in register with the ones above specified.
Loose in a depending rear armi of the hanger is a section C of the trainipe having a forward head D in screw-t read connection therewith. A spiral spring E is arranged under tension on said section of train-pipe between the hanger-arm and pipe-head. In screw-thread union with the pipe-head is one end of a nozzle F, having a packing-gasket y", seated in a front recess thereof to Aroject therefrom, and the bore of the nozz -e is controlled bya check-valve k, uided therein, the rear portion of said bore eing enlarged to form a valve-chamber. The stem m of the valve is guided in a spider fn in4 the nozzlebore, and a sprial spring p is arranged under tension on said stem between a head q of same and said. spider. The nozzle is provided with diametrically opposite longitudinal recesses, and outer ribs r, parallel to the resesses, are extended in pairs forward ofthe remainder of said nozzle. Arranged in each longitudinal recess of the nozzle and between a pair of ribs 1,' of same is a'lever G, the forward end of which has theform of a hook. A fulcrum-lug t of each lever engages a depression of the corresponding recess in the nozzle, and a hook-lug. u of the same lever has its play in another depression of said recess, this hook-lug being caught against a lip v of said nozzle to limit outward swing of the hook ends of said lever. Inward swing of the hook end of the lever is limited by the flange y of the adjacent pipe-head D, that engages with the flange f of a hanger A when a nozzle F is in normal position.
-The construction and relative arrangement of parte above specified are duplicated in eac section of my improved train -pipe coupling,` the levers G, carried by the nozzle of one section, being at intervals of ninety degrees from those carried by the nozzle of the other section of said coupling.
In practice when two cars, each properly equipped with a section of my improved train-pipe coupling, are brought together the heads q of the valve-stems p abut one another to cause an unseating of thevalves k a ainst spring resistance, and the packing-gas ets j of the nozzles F, coming into contact one with the other', said nozzles are moved longitudinally against spring resistance to thereby cause a tilt of the levers G inthe direction necessary for the outer hook end w of each to catch over an opposing flange a: of a nozzle, these outer hook ends of said levers being caught within the confines of the nozzle-collars g at about the time the coupling of the cars is eected. The hangersB for the trainpipe-coupling sections being loose on their supporting-rods A, they are free to move longitudinally of said rods, as well as to swing thereon and tilt, as aforesaid, according to various motions of the cars when the train is running. The cars being uncoupled and pulled apart, the nozzles of the train-pipe couplin automatically return to normal position, ue to expansive force of the springs E, and concurrent withthis operation the le- IIC vers G are tilted to normal position as they are carried by the respective nozzles transversely of the front openin s in the hangers and the-adjacent collars. t the same time the springs p react to seat the valves c in the and provided with nozzles.
I claim- 1. The combination of a rod forsuspension from a railway-car longitudinally of the same, a tilt-hanger in longitudinally-adjustable swing connection with the rod, a trainpipe section loose in an arm of the hanger and provided with a head', a spiral spring on the pipe-section under tension between the hanger-arm and pipe-head, a longitudinallyrecessed nozzle extending from said pipehead through a front opening in said hanger a forward packing-gasket surrounding from, a spring-controlled check-valve in the nozzle-bore having a stem rovided with a head th at normally projects beyond said nozzle, and grip-levers arranged in the nozzlerecesses to come in and out of engagement with a flange of a meeting nozzle similar to the one aforesaid.
2. The combination of a rod for suspension from a railway-car longitudinally of the same, a tilt-hanger in longitudinally-adjustable swing connection with the rod, a trainpipe section loose in an arm of the hanger and provided with a head, a spiral spring on the pipe-section under tension between the hanger-arm and pipe-head, a longitudinallyrecessed nozzle extending from said pipehead through a front opening in .said han er and provided with a forward packing-gaslet surrounding its bore and projecting therefrom, a beveled collar on the ront of the hanger in register with the openin of same, a spring-controlled check-valve in t e nozzlebore having a stem rovided with a head that normally projects beyond said nozzle, and grip-levers arranged in the nozzle-recesses to come in and out of engagement with a flange of a meeting nozzle similar to the one aforesaid, the outer ends of the levers 'of one nozits bore and projecting therezle being caught within the confines of the beveled collar of the other nozzle.
3. The combination of a hanger depending from a railway-car, a train-pipe section loose in an arm of the hanger and provided with a head, a spiral spring on the pipe-section under tension between the hanger-arm and pipehead, a longitudinally recessed nozzle extending from said pipe-head through a front openin lin said hanger and provided with a forwar packin '-gas et surrounding it-s bore and chec -valve in the nozzle-bore having a stem rovided with a head that normally projects beyond said nozzle, and grip-levers arranged in the nozzle-recesses to come in and out of engagement with a flange of a meeting nozzle similar to the one aforesaid.
4. The combination of a hanger depending from a railway-car, a trainipe section loose in an arm of the hanger anc provided with a head, a spiral spring on the pipe-section under tension between thehanger-arm and pipe- Lhead, a longitudinally-recessed nozzle extending from said pipe-head through a front opening in 4said hanger and provided with a forward packing-gas and rojecting therefrom, a beveled collar on the ront of thehanger in register with the opening of same, a spring-controlled checkvalve in the nozzle-bore yhaving a stem provided with a head that normally projects beyond said nozzle, and grip-levers arranged in the nozzle-recesses to come in and out of engagement with a flange of a meeting nozzle similar to the one aforesaid, the outer ends of the levers of one nozzle bein cau ht within the confines of the beveled co lar o the other nozzle.
