TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
1 Be it known that I, OTIS EARL, of Hermon, inthe county of St. Lawrence, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Milking-Stools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- The'drawing represents a sectional elevation of my improved stool.
The object of this invention is to provide a milking-stool with means for securing and holding the cows tail while milking-.1
It-eonsists'in-a clamping device, arrangedto be closed and maintained in alclose d condition by the weight of the milker in a sitting position on the stool, :whereby the long hairs of the tail being placed between the clamping-jaws by the milker, before sitting down, will be clumped and held unti'lhe rises, when the jaws will separate and release the tail. i
A represents the stool, which has an elongated seat, and which maybe provided with three or more\legs, as desired, one of which is preferably extended a suitable dista'nce above the seat to readily receive the long hairs at the endof a cow's tail, and provided with the recesses a b, and the axial bore 0, in the latter of whicha vertical shaft, d, is arranged, resting at its lowerend on the lever e, suspended from a fulerum,f, under the bench, and which supports at-its otherend a spindle, g, projecting through the bottom of the bench, and su 'porting, in a recess in the upper face of the same, a button, h, slightly elevated above the bench.
The milker, previous to taking his seat, may place a sufiici'entquantityof the hair of. the tail between the upper end of the shaft and the upper wall of the recess b, which will be securely clamped and held therein, while milking, by his weight on sit-ting down upon the button k.
Instead, however, of the particular-arrangement of the parts herein described, various other arrangements may, with equal advantage, be made use of to accomplish the purpose, according to the principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim'asinew, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, js
The combination, with a milking-stool, of a tail-clamping attachment, arranged to be actuated by the weight of the milker, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 18th day of July, 1868.
