ing sheeting or casing 11 with the smaller end toward the rear of the" machine, forming a guide to carry the plants to the fingers. Arranged within the wheels 6 b is an ordinary clutch-gear 11, having an operating'handle 10, employed for engaging and disengaging the bevel-gear a, and a to impart motion to the mechanism and discontinue the same. This clutch-gear may be arranged with its operating-handle passlng to an suitable point on the machine that will be convenient to operate the same. At the rear of the machine the frame portion is constructed with an n wardly-extending yoke 1c, which is of sell cient height to allow the arms to clear the some, said yoke being rigidly supported by hraccs 7: k, secured to the upright standards of the frame portion, this construction serv- On the underneath side 0 the toothed racks g, at. the forward end of each, is secured a spring is, (see Fig. 23 having a downwardlv-proj ectin tooth k, which engages the bevel-gear 9' an assists the same into an engagement with the teeth of, the rack by turning the wheel into such a position that its teeth are ready to em gage with the teeth of the rack. The ends of the carriers are provided with a hole 1:, (see Fig. 17,) which is adapted to receive the shaft In Fig. 2l,whiol1 is a modifies tion, as be I ear-wheel l is employed to mesh with a hevelear 3*, that will be mounted on the shaft b in lieu of the norm 6 and screw a, as shown and described throughout the specification. The wheel 5 secured on the shaft 0, is provided on one side with a series of beveled teeth 1, which are ndaptedlo engage the lower carrier-arms (1" and assist the some on the slide 'i.
f '0 will now assume that all the parts have lioon secured in their respective positions and the machine proper is in motion without the different parts heing'in operation.
The clutch is thrown in engagement, causing the hovel-gear o to engage with the bevelgoal a, and as the machine moves forward the shaft a will be rotated causing the wormscrew of to engage in the worm-wheel b and communicate motion to the vertical shafts b, causing same to revolve and rotate the arms carrying the picker-linger carriers. As these carriers revolve the wheels g y will engage in the toothed racks g" as they pass between the curved guides, (shown more especialiy'in Fig. 25,) and this in turn communicates motion to the picker-lingm's, causing; the same to revolve simult sineously. The machine isdrawn across the field with the some straddle of a row of plants, so as to bring the plants within the U shaped casing 11", thus bringing the open bolls in direct ontaot with the wicker-lingors, which engage in the said hols and by reason of the projecting points wind the cotton on the lingers as they are revolved and carry the same around to the comb, the fingers of which, by reason of the incline in the picker-fingers, will engage the said pickerfingers at the rear, and as they continue to rotate and descend on their movement, keeping the picker-fingers and comb-fingers in contact until past engagement, the cornbfingers will thus be permitted to effectually strip the cotton from the picker-fin ers and allow the cotton to fall into a snitab e receptacle provided therefor.
During the time that the bevel gear-wheels g are in engagement with the toothed racks g the teeth 2 of the lower arms, the teeth f of the upper arms will be in engagement with the teeth a serving to rock the carriers, the picker-fingers retaining an inclined position ,throughout the length of the cog-racks g,
of the drawings by dotted lines. At the time that the bevel-wheels 9' leave the racks g the respectively, have passed the point of contact with the teeth e and the lug eand of the arms come in engagement with t e lugs r ")f the carriers and operate the carriers, so as to throw the free ends of the picker-finers toward the drive-shaft b toward the rent of the machine, which position they retain until the bevel gear-wheels of the fin ers again come in contact with the racks, w ien they will be reversed to the former position to again engage the cotton by reason of the teeth hein in engagement again. As the Zbevehwhee s on the picker-fingers are about to enter the toothed racks the spring k engages the bevel gear-wheel before it reaches the teeth of the rack, compressing this spring, and as its tooth Z-r" passes out of'ongagement with the bevel-gear g the action of the spring in returning to its normal position ro tatcs the picker-fingers and forces the bevelwheel more readily into engagement with the teeth of the rack and prevents any lost motion at this point. As the bevel-gears g g enter into engagement with the tooth-racks the picker-fingers will he revolved and will )e entered into the hells in an inclined position, thereby causing the projecting points g, g of the iingersto more readily engage the cotton and to effectively remove the same from the bolls.
v As the teeth e andf of the lower and upper arms, respectively, enga c in the teeth e in theend of the carriers t e fingers will be in engagement with the cotton, and by the time the lingers have passed. out of engagement the teeth willhave passed the point of con- ,taet and the lugs e andfof the lower and upper arms, respectively, will engage the lug e on the upper and lower end of the carriers and return the fingers to their original posi- Lion By this arrangenwnt of inserting the lingers in the cotton-lmlls at an inclined posii tion and revolving the same-therein, while their position being fully illustrated in Fig. 2
