At its upper end the shaft F carries a bevel-gear j, which meshes with a similar gear-f, mounted on the shaft of cvlinder a, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 6. While the shaft. F. with its connections. is intended primarily for driving press A when pres B is to remain idle. obviously it may also be used to couple the two presses together.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that either set of \rintrng mechanism A or B may be driven a one or the two sets of rinting mechanism may be coupled toget er to operate in unison.
Each set of irinting mechanism is provided with aset o delivery apparatus which is ada ted to operate in unison therewith and is I. riven therefrom. 10 indicates a cornbined cutting. collecting. and loldirn cyliin der. which forms a part of the set of delivery apparatus of the lower set of printing meclramsm and cooperates with a cutting-cvlindcr H to sever the lower web transversely into sheets. So far as that portion of the set of delivery apparatus thus far described is concerned it, separately considered. has heretofore been patented to me and is not herein separately claimed. When the center of the sheet, which is severed from the web by the knives carried by the cylinder 11, arrives opposite the meeting line of the folding-rollers 13, the foldingblade 14 acts to thrust the doubled edge of said sheet into the bite of said rollers. which seize it and carry it between said rollers, mal ing the first transverse fold. Where no collecting is neces ary. as where eightage pa- ,pers are to be produced, the eylirn er i0 is irovided with two folding-blades. as shown Where collecting is to be done, as is usually necessarv in printing sixteen-p papers. one of the folding-blades of the cvlinder til is silenced or entirely removed, as shown in Fi 1. In collccting.certain sheets are carried back and superposed on the web, as follows: The sheet to be superposed is severed at its rear margin froru the web by the action of one of the knives of the cutting-cylinder 11. At this time the severed sheet extends half-way aroimd the cylinder 10. The sheet then passes back over guides 17 to cylinder 12, where it meets and is associated with the third succeeding sheet, the latter being as yet nnsevered from the web. The assembled sheets then as together under cylinder 12, between cylinders 10 and 12, where the unsevcred sheet is severed from the web, and thence up artl around cylinder 10, where they are old together transversely between rollers 13 by the folding-blade 14.

In Fi sJIi and 4 I have illus rated several modified arrangements for securing the assembling of the products of thetwo sets of printing mechanism in web form. In one arrangetnent instead of conducting the web front the former 6 over the lower foldingroller 13'. as just described, the web is con ducted around the cutting-cylinder 11 which is divest-ed of its cutting-blades. an thence passes down to the former 7-,-bci conducted over a guide-roller 51 to the rol ets 9 at the apex of the former 73 between which it passes with the web from the former 7. In lieu of this arrangement the web 49 mav pass from the'cylinder l t'around a tape- I roller 52, which carries the tapes l6 directlv to the cylinder 10, passing between said c v indcr and the'tapes -16, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. l and 3. Still another arrangement consists in conducting the web 49 from the rollels S at the apex of the former 6 over guidc-rollers 53 54, arran i at one side, to the rollers 9. as shown in t otted lines in Fig. 3. or over a third guide-roller 55 to the c vlinder 12. as shown in full lines in Fi 3. The roller 55 is preferably one of the rollers which carry the tapes 1;). The arrangement just described avoids conductin the web through a part of the collecting mechanism on the upper set of .rinting mechanism.

In a printing-press, the combination of a plurality of sets of printing mechanism, means for driving said sets of printing mechanism se a-rately or together, a pluralit of sets of de ivery apparatus, each having transverse-folding mechanism, means for conducting a web from one of said sets of printin mechanism to and associating the same wit 1 the web of another of said sets of rinting mechanism or for conducting the we a from the different sets of printing mechanism to different sets of delivery ap aratus and soparatelysovoring them into s ieets and folding the sheets transversely, and afterward associating transversely-folded sheets from said sets of delivery apparatus, substantially as described. i

In a delivery apparatus for printingpresses, the combination of a plurality of lonitudinal folders, a plurality of transversefolding mechanisms, and means for either assembling folded sheets from said transversefoldnig mechanisms after they have been folded transversely or for assembling lon itudinally-folded webs, substantially as scribed.
