It is one of theobjects of myinvention to remedy this defect.
Reference being had to the drawings, Figurb 1 is a' sectional elevation of a rope-drum withjmy invention' applied thereto. Fi 2 is an end view, partly 1n section, of a w ieel embodying my invention.
The followinfr is a description of the brake- A band and whee shown in the accompan ing drawings, which illustrate the form in w ich I at resent prefer to embody my invention. It w11 be understood, however, that various modifications and changes may be made. in the details of the same without departing fromV my invention and without exceeding the scope of the concluding claims. I have .shown the brake-band applied to a handwheel, but do not wish to limit myself to this oierating means, as others may be employe 1 and 2 are stationary end frames carrying bushings 3 and 4, in which the shaft 5 is journaled. The shaft 5 is held against longitiidinalanovement b flanges on the interior of the bushing 4, these iianges projecting into thc grooves 6 and 7 of the shaft, and also by the shoulder 8 of the shaft bearing against the face of the frame 2, the collar 9 fixed to the end of the shaft and which bears against Specification of Letters Patent.

To take care of friction upon the thrustpin 17, I employ a lubricating-box similar to that described in l 541,308, for containing a lubricant to immcrse'the beari rig-sin'facc between the thrust pin 17 and the screw 18. The friction-screw -18 isoperated bymeans of the hand-wheel or4 other means 21, ailixed thereto. Cast on said wheel is a flange 22, u on whi'chis placed Aa brake-band 23, preferab y of steel,
24 24 are sup orting-arms which are suitably secured to t e frame 2. `Thesearms extend downward and at their lower ends are made fast to the pin or bolt 25, which is secured to the frame 2. Fulcrumed to the pin 25 is the bell-cranklever 26. One arm 27 of this lever has secured to it the end of the brake-band 23. The other arm 29,y which forms a treadle with a foot-piece 34, has a projection thereon, to which is screwthreaded and secured, by means of the nut 31, the end 32 of the brake-band. This end, 32
passes through an openin 33 iii-the end 28 of ,the brake-band. This turning willcause the screw 18 to operate, which in turn will opcrate upon the pm 17. This pin being acted upon will bear afvainst the key 16, which- Y bears against the drum 13 and will push said drum againstthe spring 15 until the groove ro of the flange 1`4 frictionally engages with the ring l2 and clutches the same. -By this means the-drum may be setto thc desired position and will remain in that position, the brake-band preventingr the whc'cl from turni 5 ing backward and releasing the friction-serew and the mechanism which o )crates to set the drum. At the same time the other arm 29 and the end 32 of the brake will be lowered and the brake-band will release its hold on the wheel, permitting it vto be turned z 5 backward, and thus bringing the drnm out of its frictional eneagement with the ring 12.
