tion, the tendency. would the tcp tliereol until they' 'meet at about the center of the cylinder. These troughs carry the water which is sucked from the pulp through the perforated shell of the cylinder 5- toward the ends ci the cylinder, Where it is discharffed.
890 denotes a packing between the tenir and the perforated cylinder-head. It is ias-` tened to a parti-annular flange @0i on the inro side oi the tank and presses against an annular iiangeSOQ, projecting from the cylinderheed. lts purpose is to prevent the escape oi the pulp into the chamber which receives the Water which escapes through the cylinderr 5 head.
ln order to extrae, the noter from the pulp after it is formed on the surface of lthe cylinder, 'the exterior of the cylinder or of certain compartments is subjected to s suction ac- .'zo tion o? some'sort.
ln Fics, 1, 2, 3, d there is shown a list late @00, Wllich is lheld against the end o t e cylinder by the springs 901. T s castinc has two chambers 1u-Bi .and i002, separated by the @smtlich i503. @n the outer side oi the It will be 45 ewhich is connected With a pump which will create a suction of great intensity. .lt Will be seen that as the cylinder revolves and a compartment registers with the chamber i601 in the rear oi the cap thst compart- 5o nient will be subjected to e suction action of considerable volume, but not D'"reat intensity.. rl`his suction extracts the moisture from the ulp to a slight degree; but more particularly it lays the pui or felts it, or es it is said in As this scction travels around end registers with the chamber 1G02 the surface oi the cylinder ernbraced between 'the artitions is subjected to a suction action or considerable intensity,-
o which extracts pretty thoroughly the bulk oi' moisture in the pulp. If the compartments Were subjected to a suction action of conside'rable intensity immediately after the cylinder With its accumulated ulp left the soluiic to draw the air einem through the pulp and inalre it porous and i'ulliof holes. To obv-late this diiliculty, i erncploy the above described construction an arran ement, which accomplishes the desired resu ts and produces a iirin and Wellmade sheet.
