Be it known that I, ROBERT E. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaufort, in the county of Oarteret and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in toys of the class known as mechanical figure toys, wherein the representation of figures are suitably operated in the manipulation of the device to afford a pleasing and entertaining novelty.
The main object of the present invention is the production of a plurality of figures so mounted as to be capable of individual manipulation, whereby to vary the operation and movement of the figures to materially add to the effect of the toy.
The details of structure will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation illustrating the mounting of one of the figures. Fig. 4 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, illustrating the mounting of another of the figures.
Referring particularly to the drawings, my improved top comprises a circular base or platform 1, preferably circular in plan and of any desired material. Extending from the periphery of said disk platform inward slightly beyond the center thereof I form a narrow slot 2, and from points about diametrically opposite said slot I form the parallel slots 3 and 4. Said slots 3 and 4 are of less length than the slot 2 and are spaced an equal distance on each side of the longitudinal plane of the slot 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Immediately in front of the slots 3 and 4 and in alinement with the slot 2 I provide the platform with an opening 5, said slots and openings serving to permit the desired operation of the figures, as hereinafter described.
6 indicates an elevated structure made in the form of a house and secured to the upper side of the platform, so as to overlie and conceal the slots 3 and 4 and partially conceal the opening 5, said house structure facing toward the center of the disk, with its front wall formed immediately above said opening 5 with an irregular aperture 7, which, to-
gether with the exposed portion of the opening 5, is adapted to represent a mouse-hole or the like. The upper window 8, formed in the front wall of the house structure, is entirely open, while a portion of one of the lower wmdows 9. is also open, such remaining windows or doors as may be provided being closed or open, as may be found convenient. The operating parts of the toy are mounted wholly beneath the platform, comprising, essentially, a shaft 10, revolubly supported in hangers 11, depending from the platform, on which shaft are loosely mounted parallel rollers 12 and 13, a spacing-collar 14 being arranged on the shaft intermediate the rollers to support said rollers in proper relation v to the slot 2, the arrangement being such that the roller 13 is supported practically in alinement with the slot, while roller 12 is mounted slightly to one side thereof. A rod 15 is fixed to the roller 13 and arranged so that in the revolution of the roller said rod will be projected from the slot 2. A figure, such as the representation of a cat 16, is pivotally supported on the upper end of the rod 15, said figure being so mounted as to retain its equilibrium in all positions of the rod, whereby in the operation of the parts the figure 16 will have the appearance of jumping from one position to the other. The roller 12 is provided with a rod 17, fixedly secured in the peripheral edge thereof and extending through the opening 5 in the platform, being bent adjacent said opening and terminally projected therethrough, a figure, such as the representation of a mouse 18, being secured upon the terminal of thisrod.
Hangers 19, depending from the disk platform immediately adjacent the slots 3 and 4, are arranged to revolubly support a transverse shaft 20, on which are loosely mounted rollers 21 and 22, respectively, a spacingsleeve 23 encircling the shaft 20 between the rollers and serving to hold said rollers in ver tical alinement with their respective slots. The roller 21 is provided with a rod 24, fixedly secured to the periphery of said roller, said rod normally projecting upwardly within the house structure 6 and being provided at its upper end with the representation of a figure, such as a female 25. The rod 24 is of such length and the figure 25 so arranged that in the normal position of the parts said figure will have the appearance of looking through the open window 8 at the top of the structure. The roller 22 is also provided IIO with a projecting rod 26, extending upward within the house structure and terminally provided with the representation of a figure, such as a dog 27. The rod 26 is of such length that the figure 27 in the normal position of the parts will have the appearance of being practically projected through the open portions of the window 9 at the lower part of the house structure.
As the respective rollers 12, 13, 21, and 22 are capable of independent operation, it is obvious that said rollers may be revolved by finger manipulation to cause the figures to assume various positions and undergo various movementssuch, for example, as causing the mouse 18 to appear through the opening 5 and the figure 25 to look through the window 8, when the cat or figure 16 may be caused to jump toward the mouse and the figure 27 caused to partially project through the window as if attem ting to attack the figure 16. The independent operation of the various rollers will of course permit the described operation to be varied as desired, so that any one or more of the figures may be left in a normal or set position and the others operated, by which construction it is fully evident that various modifications of the movement and efiect of the figures may be made at the will of the operator, thereby producing a toy which Without change is capable of being varied to afford many novel and complete changes and effects.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A toy comprising a circular platform formed with a radially-arranged slot proj ecting in one direction from the center of the platform and with two parallel slots extending in the opposite direction from the center of the platform, said platform being formed with an opening intermediate the face of the slots, abuilding structure secured to the platform to overlie the parallel slots, a plurality of rollers independently mounted adjacent the first mentioned slot, a rod projecting from one of said rollers and extending through the slot, a rod projecting from the other of said rollers and extending through the opening, independently-mounted rollers respectively supported adjacent each of the parallel slots, rods projecting from said rollers and extending through the adjacent slot, and figures supported on the ends of the rods.
2. A toy comprising a circular platform formed with a radially-arranged slot projecting in one direction from the center of the platform and with two parallel slots extending in the opposite direction from the center of the platform, said platform being formed with an opening intermediate the face of the slots, a building structure secured to the platform to overlie the parallel slots and partially conceal the opening, a plurality of rollers independently mounted adjacent the first-mentioned slot, a rod projecting from one of said rollers and extending through the slot, a rod projecting from the other of said rollers and extending through the opening, independently-mounted rollers respectively supported adjacent each of the parallel slots, rods projecting from said rollers and extending through the adjacent slot, and figures supported on the face of the rods.
