To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS VON AZARY, government chief engineer, a citizen of Austrialiungary, residing at Li pa, in the county of Tomes and. Empire of ustria-Hungary, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Apparatus for the Manufacture of Reticulated or Open-Work Wire Receptacles, of which the following is a specification This invention has for its object certain improvements in apparatus of the character disclosed in United States Patent No. 752,748, granted to me February 23, 1904, which relates to the making of open or reticulatcd wire sacks of unlimited length adapted to be filled with concrete and stone or the i like placed along rivers to protect the banks thereof.
The present invention has for its obj eet the provision of an apparatus for making sacks of uniform diameter in different sizes.
To this end the present invention comprises a structure having a plurality of bars preferably arranged in a circular manner about a centrallydisposed shaft, said bars being contracted and expanded through the medium of a plurality of spreading and 0 crating links adjustably connected with t 1e bars and shaft, respectively, the said bars having arranged on their outer faces, preferably in a spiral or helical formation, a plurality of pins adapted to be enga ed by the wire in the operation of formin the sack.
My invention will be more fu ly described in connection with the accompanying drawings and will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims;
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partly in section, illustrating the preferred e1nbodiment of my invention, showing the device in full lines with the bars in an expanded position and in dotted lines with the same in a contracted position. Fi 2 is a horizontal section on lines I I and I II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates a modified form of the invention.
First describing the preferred construction, the same consists o a plurality of bars a, provided on their opposite ends with enlargements and on their outer faces with a plurality of projecting pins t, preferably arranged in a manner to give the wire which forms the sack and which is wound about the apparatus a spiral formation. The method of forming and the construction of the sack is fully disclosed in my prior patent hereinbefore identified. There is provided a centrally-disposed shaft j, having at its upper end an eye adapted for engagement with a supporting-hook or the like and having on its lower end an annular shoulder. Said bars a are connected to the rod j near their lower ends by means of spreading-links Z, which are pivotally secured to said bars and to an. adjustable sleeve it, provided with a set-screw r for adj ustably fixing the same to the shaft j. The shoulder on the shaft j forms a stop normally limiting downward movement of the sleeve n. The upper ends of the bars a are connected to they shaft y' by a plurality of spreading-links l, pivotally secured to said bars near their upper ends and to a sleeve p, which is adjustably fixed to the shaft by means of a set-screw s.
The means whereby the bars a are contracted and expanded toward and from the supporting-rod y' consist in the form shown of operating-links m and m, pivotally secured, respectively, at their outer ends to the links I and Z and at their inner ends to sleeves 0 and g, which are slidably mounted on the rod 3'. The rod 7' is threaded near its upper end and there is provided an operating-nut it, having a hand-wheel tand a threaded bore adapted for engagement with the screw-threaded portion of the shaft j. Said nut u is rotatably connected with the sleeve Q by means of an overhanging flange g, ada ted for engagement with an annular flange 'ormed on the sleeve 9.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that as the hand-wheel t is rotated in an upward direction the operating-links m will draw the bars a, into a contracted. position, (shown in dotted lines in Fi 1,) while a reverse movement of the han -wl1ee]. t will serve to exand the bars in the position shown in full ines. The adjustment shown in Fig. 1 brings the bars a throughout their length a uniform distance from the supporting-rod j when said rods are either in a contracted or expanded position. This adjustment is made when it is desired to construct a sack of uniform diameter throughout its length.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modified form of the device of my invention, wherein the sleeve 0 is located upon the rod 7' above the sleeve 10, the spreading-links Z Z and operating-links m m being secured to the bars a in the manner hereinbefore shown and described, the operation of the bars a being effected by the handy-heel it.
Having nowparticularly described and as certainod the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is' 1. An apparatus of the class described comprising a plurality of vertically-disposed bars provided with a plurality of projecting pins arranged to give the wound wire a spiral formatirn, a centrally-disposed shaft provided with screw-threads, sleeves rigidly secured to said shaft, links connecting said sleeves with each of said bars, loosely-mount ed sleeves for said shaft, links connecting said sleeves with said first-mentioned links, a nut operating on the screw-threaded portion of the shaft and rotatively connected with one of said movable sleeves for contracting or expanding the vertical bars in unison.
2. An apparatus of the class described comprising a plurality of vertically-disposed bars arranged in parallel relation and in the form of a cylinder and provided on their lower ends with enlarged base portions, said bars having on their outer faces a plurality of plns arranged to give the Wound wire a spiral formation, a shaft provided with a threaded upper end and an annular shoulder on its lower end, a sleeve rigidly secured to the lower end. of said shaft, links connecting said sleeve with two ofsaid bars, a looselymounted sleeve located above said first-mentioned sleeve, links connecting said looselymounted sleeve and said first-mentioned links, an adjast'able sleeve rigidly secured to the threaded portion of said shaft, actuating-links connectingsaid sleeve with said bars, a loosely-mounted sleeve located above said adjustable sleeve, links connecting said loosely-mounted sleeve with said actuatinglinks, and a nut rotatively secured to said,
loosely-mounted sleeve and engaging the threaded portions of said shaft, said nut being provided with a hand-wheel for contracting and expanding the ars in unison.
