Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 80, 1906.
Application filed May 27,1905. Serial N- 262,B51.
To all whom` it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD'L. MAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksburg, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a speciiication.
monly used at the upper open end of molds of This invention. comprises a novel construction of mold of that class designed particularly for forming sewerage-pipe.
The essential features of the invention reside in the peculiar construction of the moldbody, the s v ecial construction of collapsible core-utilize thereforf, and in the provision of Va peculiar form of mold-ring, such as comthis type.
For a full description of the invention and .the merits thereof and also to acquire alinowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference .is Vto be had to the following description and aocoinpanying drawings, in which- Figure l' is a side elevation of a mold einbodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sec* tional view on the line X X of Fig. 2. YFig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the mold-ring.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the core. Fig. 6 is a detai perspective view of the mold-ring collapsed.
Corresponding and. like lparts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the saine reference characters.
Specifically describing the invention, the
base of the mold is indicated at 1, and the same is formed -upon its up er side with a base ring or annulus 2, ire erably integral therewith. The ringZ is esigned to centralize the mold 'and core parts in setting the 4same up preparatory to the molding operaabove described together as the material is being tampedfin the mold. The pipe or pipe tion.
sections which are formed by a mold embodying this invention are each, molded with an enlarged end, in which a smaller end of a second adjacent section of the pipe is ada ted to fit, and the -construction ofthe mo dsections 3 is suoli as to form a peculiar swelled or enlarged end portion of the molded pipesection, ywith advantages which will appear more fully hereinafter. T1 e mold-sections B are adapted to fit'aboutthe ring 2 of thebase 1 exterior of the latter, whereas the core 6 rests upon the base 1 within the ring 2. i
The core 6 is colla v sible and is composed of a plurality of pivotally or hin 'edly connected sections 6', 6b, 6, and 6d. t will beI understood that the number of sections of the core 6, though preferably four, may be varied accordingl to the desire of the manufacturer and the practical advantages of the construc- The sections 6 and 6 are not connected ytogether directly, as are the other adjacent seetions of the core, in order that the said sections 6*l in collapsing the core may be pulled inwardly, so that the several sections may be folded together to a certain extent in displacing the core from vthe mold. The meeting edge portions of the'sections 6*1 and 6d are cut away on a' bevel or inclination, so that such portions overlap, as shown at 7, when the coresections are arranged in oper ative position. The section 6a of the core has a strip 8 of metal or the like, attached thereto vertically of its inner side, said strip ing located adjacent the portion of tie sectionfa, which abuts with the seetion'd, so
that the strip will overla the section 6d upon the inner side thereof w ien the various sec tions of the coro 6 have been spread apart and are arranged and held in operative position. The strip-8 is designed to preserve the cylindrical shape of the core to the greatest extent possible, so as to conduce to the formation of the perfectly cylindrical pipe-section upon completion of the molding operation. The core-sections may be held spread apart or in ol erative position by transverse 4 braces 9, an these braces'areI perfectly el` TOO bow-braces, consisting of pivotally-conneoted sections, though it will be understood that' any suitable form of brace.means may be used to supportand hold the core in operative position. The braces 9 may have ivotal connection with the sections 6 an i nected as above described and adapten'. to ing the core and adapted to be reduced in overlap the adjacent abutting portion of the diameter on removing the same. xo other disconnected section to preserve the `In testimony whereof I aHix my signature cylindrical shape cf the core, and jonti in presence of two Witnesses. braces interposed between opposing sections EDWRD L.
