To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OnAnLns LEAVITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johnsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Wagon Bodies, of which the ollowing is a specification.

' My invention has relation to new and useful improvements in wagon-bodies, and has for its object the production of an article of this class by means of which the delivering of packages and other articles may be ac complished in a convenient and expedient manner, said body being adapted to be mounted on either two or four wheels, pro- VlSlOl'l being made to accommodate the driver behind the rear axle should he desire to stand or be seated.

With these ends in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter shown.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by like characters throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my invention. Fig. 3 is an inside view of my invention, cut on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view of my invention, cut on the line 4 41 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.

My invention is described as follows:

The numeral 1 represents my improved body, which consists of the box 2, which is arranged upon a pair or two pairs of wheels. The rear portion of my improved body is of such construction that it drops down behind the rear axle and forms-a compartment 3, said compartment being provided with a suitable floor 1, upon which the driver stands. The said box 2 of my improved body is also provided with a suitable floor 5, upon which the packages or otehr articles to be delivered are arranged, said box being constructed of any desired length or width.

My body is formed with a door-opening 6 in the rear thereof for the purpose of gaining access thereto and is provided with a top 6, of tin, copper, or other waterproof material. The said compartment is entirely closed at its front end from the floor 5 of said box 2 to the floor 4 of said compartment by the vertical wall 7. The rear portion of :my improved body is also provided with two transversely opposite vertical walls 8 and 9, said walls being provided with seats 10 of any desired form or construction, secured to the inner faces of said vertical walls. In the upper portion of said vertical walls are window-openings, and. in said openings are window-frames 1'2, removably secured to the upper portion of the said walls, being held. in position by means of cleats 13, one of the ends of which is pivoted to the lower beam of said window-frame, the others secured to the inner faces of said walls 8 and 9 and turning downwardly. My body is also provided at its front end with a window 14, being removably secured thereto by means of cleats 15, secured in the same manner as the cleats above described.

Secured to the inner face of the cross-brace located at the upper end of the rear portion of my body, is a cross horizontal track 16, a door-bar 17 being held in slidable sus-. pension therefrom by means of a loop 18, the upper end of said door-bar being secured between the free ends of said loop, the upper portion of said loop riding on said track.

Rotatably and vertically secured at therear end of improved body is a roller 19, the lower end of said roller working in a bearing 20 in said floor 4 of said compartment 3, the upper end terminating in a rod 21, passing through a perforation in a guide-brace 22, secured to the inner face of said cross-beam 15", upon which roller is wound a roll of canvas or other flexible material 23, one end of which is secured to said door-bar 17 and the other end to said roller.

Secured. to the inner face of the vertical wall" 9 of my improved body near its upper end is one end of a coil of resilient wire 25, the opposite end of said coil being adapted to receive and hold one end of a rope or cord 26, adapted. to wind or unwind upon the said rod 21 of said roller 19. The said door-bar is provided with a bolt 27, which is adapted to be received and held by a catch 28, secured. to. the inner face of the vertical wall 28, located at the extreme rear portion of my body.

Whenldesire to close the door, I take hold. of the bolt 27 and slide the door-bar 17 along the said track 16 and fasten the said bolt 27 in said catch 28, during which operation the canvas or other material 23 unwinds from the roller 19, causing said roller to rotate, the cord or rope 26 winding upon the rod 21 of said roller, the coil of resilient wire being sprung out longitudinally a distance equal to the lateral movement of the door.

When wishing to close the door, I release the bolt 27 from the catch 28, and the coil of wire causes the door to resume and retain an open position, the canvas or other material 23 winding upon the roller 19 and the cord or rope 26 unwinding from the rod 21 of said roller.

Extending vertically from the bottom of my body are braces 29 and beams 29, upon which are secured curtain-poles consisting of two rollers 31, connected together by means of an axle-rod 32, said rods being journaled near their centers in bearings 33, the rear ends of said rods passing through staples 33, secured to said vertical beams 29, their front ends journaled in bearings 35 and terminating in eyes 34, said eyes being adapted to receive and hold one end of a cord or rope 36, the opposite end of which cord is secured in eyed arms 37 of coils of wire 38, said arms extending inwardly toward the rear of said body, the upper end of said coils 38 terminating in integral arms 39, by means of which said coils are secured to the inner face of a cross-beam 39. Secured to said rollers 31 of my said curtain-poles is one end of curtains 40, the other ends of said curtains being secured to curtain-bars 41, each of which bars are provided with a forked hook 42. When I wish to lower the said curtains, I take hold of the hooks 42 and pull downwardly until said hooks are hooked over the buttons 43, secured to the outer faces of the said box 2, during which operation the said curtians 4O unwind from said rollers 31, causing same to rotate, the cord or rope 36 thereby being wound around the eyed rods 34, the free ends of said ropes causing the outer ends of said lever-arms to be sprung outwardly. WVhen wishing to raise said curtains, I release the hooks 42 from the buttons 43.- The action of the coils of wire 38 then cause said rollers to rotate in an opposite direction, and the curtains are wound thereon.

The top 6 of my improved body is made in two parts 6 and 6 the roofing of the rear part 6 being secured to strips 6, the front end of which roofing is formed in a loop 6 looping over a projection 6 of the roofing of the part 6 This construction is to enable me to remove the front portion of the roof when desired.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a wagon-body, the combination of a body consisting of a box 2, the rear portion of said body forming a downwardly-extending compartment 3, said body being formed with window- openings 12 and 14, a door-opening 6, and a top 6; seats 10, secured to the inner faces of the walls; window- frames 12 and 14, removably secured to the side and front walls, and held in position by cleats 13; across horizontal track 16, secured to the inner face of a cross-brace 15 located at the upper end of the rear portion of said body; a door-bar 17, held in slidable suspension on said track; a loop 18, secured to the upper end of the said doorbar, and riding on said track; a roller 19, rotatably and vertically secured at the rear end of said body, the lower end of said roller working in a bearing 20, in the floor 4, of said compartment 3, its upper end terminating in a rod 21, passing through a perforation in a guide-brace 22, secured to the inner face of said cross-beam 15 a roll of canvas or other material 23, having one end secured to said door-bar 17, and its other to said roller 1 9 a coil of resilient wire 25, secured at one end to the inner face of said vertical wall; a cord 26, one end secured to the free end of said resilient wire, and its other end to said rod 21, and adapted to wind or unwind upon the said rod 21; a bolt 27, secured to said door-bar 17; a catch 28, secured to the inner face of a vertical wall 28, located at the extreme rear portion of my body, said catch adapted to receive and hold said bolt, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a wagon-body, the combination of a body consisting of a box 2, the rear portion of said body forming a downwardly-extending compartment 3, said compartment having a door 6, in its rear end; two transversely opposite vertical walls 8 and 9, located at the rear portion of said body, provided with window-openings; windows 12, removably secured in said openings by cleats 13, holding said windows in place; braces 29, and

.beams 29, extending vertically from the floor of said body; curtain-poles, consisting of two rollers 31, secured to said bracebeams; axle-rods 32, connecting said rollers together, the rear ends of said rods passing through staples 33, secured to said vertical beams 29, their front ends journaled in bearings 35, and terminating in eyes 34; cords 36, secured at one of their ends in said eyes 34; coils of wire 38, terminating at their upper ends in integral arms 39, and at their lower ends in eyed arms 37, said eyed arms adapted to receive and hold the free ends of said cords 36; curtains 40, secured at one end to said rollers 31, their other ends secured to curtainbars 41; forked hooks 42, secured to said cur tain-bars, and buttons 43, secured to the outer faces of said box 2, said buttons adapt ed to receive and hold the lower ends of said forked hooks, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.

3. The combination of a body; a compartment extending downwardly from the rear end of said body; seats secured in said compartment; a roof covering two-thirds of the top front of said body, its rear end terminating in a vertical flange, and a roof secured to removable longitudinal beams, covering onethird of the top, rear end, of said body, the front end of said body terminating in a bight overlapping said vertical flange, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.

4. The combination of a wagon-body, having a rear downwardly-extending compart ment; a door-opening formed in the rear wall of said body; a curtain secured in a roller, situated in one corner and the rear end of said body, actuated by a spring; a roll of canvas secured on said roller and adapted to be unrolled and close said dooropening; rollers, rotatably secured longitudinally, two on each side and near the roof of said body, said rollers actuated by springs; curtains having one end secured to said rollers, their outer ends to longitudinal bars, and adapted each to be hooked over a button, and thus close the sides of said body, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.

5. The combination of a wagon-body, having front and side window-openings; a window fitting in said front window-opening; fixed cleats, rigidly secured to the upper beam of said. Window frame, holding said frame in said opening, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
