To all whom, it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, DENNIS D. CAsEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Springfield, Hampden and State of invented certain new Massachusetts, have and useful Improvements in Tank-Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in valves, more especially ball-cocks for watercloset tanks.
The object of the invention is to devise a valve which is of extreme simplicity, cheap of manufacture, durable, and efficient in action, and operative almost noiselessly and with an avoidance of Water-hammering or whistling.
The invention consists in specific details of improvement in combination with the valve, all substantially as hereinafter particularly described, and set forth in the claim.
The improved valve is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section as taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section as taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a partial side view;

The valve body or shell comprises the two sections A and B, endwise ad j oined and united by the union-coupling C, which engages the flange a of the section A and has a screw-thread engagement with the section B.
The section A is adapted to be coupled, as indicated at b, with the water-supply pipe D, and the section B at the upper portion thereof, which is coupled to the main section A, is widened at d, whereby an inclosed chamber of sufficient area is produced around the seating upper end of the valve G, which is comprised of the solid and closed end of a tube G which makes the nozzle or delivery end of the valve or cock, such tube being guided in the lower tubular-formed end portion of the section B of the valve-casing.
The end of the main valve-casing section. to which the secondary section B is adjoined and coupled is made flaring, as indicated at 00, to form a cup-shaped valve-seat surrounding the opening 1 where the valve closes, the end of the valve being rounded to conform to the seat, and the seat is advantageously constituted by a cup-shaped elastic packing f, having an opening centrally therethrough to in the county of be non-obstructing of the waterway and having a marginal flange, whereby to be confined between the adjoined end portions of the valve-casing sections A and B.
The tube, which is guided in the tubular valvecasing section B, is open at its forward or lower end and has ports 9 forward of the solid rounded valve-constituting end portion G, and in order to avoid the water which rushes through the valve-seat and through the ports 9, sidewise located in the valvetube, from causing a whistling noise, as might be done by impingement 011 and oppositely across a sharp boundary of each port 9, the solid end portion of the valve is forwardly rounded, as indicated at h. 'The tubular section B of the valve-casing has at its lower or forward end portion the oppositely-located slotways i 'i, through which project separated lugs y' 7', formed in like pairs at the opposite sides of the valve-tube G, the edge walls of the slots 1' i constituting guides for the said lugs j.
The tubular valve-casing section B has, near its lower end, the integrally-formed earlugs 7r Ir, pivotally hung to which at m is the operating-lever J for the cook, the same being of fork shape to loosely embrace the lower portion of the valve, the opposite members a n of such forked portion passing in engagement between the pairs of the aforementioned lugs j, so that swinging movement of the ball-carrying lever J will positively operate the part G G constituting the valve and delivery-nozzle.
An annular rib 0 is formed around the contracted portion of the valve-seat to serve as a guard for the inner end portion of the annular rubber packing :r, preventing the water from the supply through the valve-seat opening from engaging or entering under the edge of the annular and flaring packing and forwardly deflecting and turning the same inside out.
Of course while the device is herein illustrated as a ball-cock for water-closet tanks it is applicable as a valve available for use in other situations.
