Description

PATENTED JAN. 23, 1906.
E. E. PEEEY. WATER ESCAPE. APPLIOATION FILED AUG.Z4, 1905.
UNITED sTATns PATENT onirica.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PERRY, OF TODDS POINT TOWNSHIP, SHELBY COUNTY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T O CHARLES BEVER-ALY DAVIS, OF TODDS POINT TOWNSHIP, SHELBY COUNTY, ILLINOIS.
.WATEF-ESCAPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1906.
To @L whom. it may concern: Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PERRY, a citizen oi the UnitedStates, residing in Todds Point township, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Water-Escape, of which the following is a specication.`
My invention relates to improvements in Water-escapes, by which surface water is allowed to enter directly'into a tile ditch or 1 f sewer or by which thesurplus water from a tank, pond, cess ool, or reservoir may be carried away by a rain-pipe; and the objects of my invention are, iirst, to provide means for carrying surface water from depressions in frozen gro'und or hard an soil; second, to prevent the entrance o trash, dirt, or sediment into tile .or sewer, and thereby clogging the same; third, to afford means to keep rodents and other animals out ofthe tile or sewer that might enter through the waterescape; fourth, tol afford a combination of an air-vent and water-escape. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurev l represents the entire device at'- tached to a tile-ditch embedded in the earth. Fig. 2v shows the several parts of the same, shown detached.
Similar letters refer tosimilar parts in both views. I
. The base-cylinder H is connected directly with the tile or sewer, and fitting closely 'on the inside ot this there is the shorter cylinder I, which is* held in position by having a flanged top resting upon the top of said cylinder II. The said inside cylinder I is provided with a screen at top D and a screen at the bottom F and also has an opening E in the side at the base.
The top cylinder B is of considerably larger diameter than the base-cylinder and is intended to come down over the same, so
. cylinder B.
as to telescope about half the exposed part of said cylinder Il, so as to afford an annular passage between said cylinders. Said top cylinder B is provided with a removable grating A at the top and is intended to extend above high-water mark, as it is not intended that any water shall enter at the top of said The brackets C C and G G are for the purpose of holding the said cylinders Il and B- in their relative positions. The
same object may be attained 'by use of posts or piersin event the. device is too`large to ren- .from the fact that most of the trash and debris remain iioating upon the surface of the Water very little of such trash or debris will ever be permitted to get on the inside of the said cylinder B, and this will be arrested by the said screens D and F on theinside cylinder` I. These said screens D and F are also for the purpose of' preventing rodents and other animals from entering the tile, sewer, or drain through the water-eseape. When the wash of sand or the deposit of silt about the water-escape accumulates to the extent of reaching up to the base ofthe top cylinder B, the free flow oi water will thereby be obstructed, so that none of said silt or sand will be carried or washed into the tile or drain. All the debris and mud deposits may b e reremoving said cylinder B from the posts or piers. The said inside cylinder I may be easily removed, being provided with the opening E, so that any foreign body that'rnay have moved by unfastening the. said brackets or found its way therein can be speedily re' moved.
I am aware that prior to my invention simle water-escapes and .simple air-vents have een used; but I am not aware that they have been combined as above specified. However,
I do not desire to'elaim such combination too broadly; but What Ido claim as my invention, and desire to secure by my Letters Patent, isf- 1. The herein-described Water-,escape consisting oi the top cylinder B with the grated top A, the base-cylinder Il, and the inside cylinder I with the screens D and F and the opening E all substantially as set forth and for the purposes herein specified.
2, In a water-escape, the combination, with a basecylinder attached to the tile.-
vdrain or outlet, of atop cylinder havina le suitable means of su pp ort and a remova IOO IOS
fsa
grating, and being of sxifcientlength and dameter to extend above high-Water mark, and to telescope about half the exposed part -of the base-cylinder aording an annular passage for the escape of the Water as' shown and described.
3. In a. Water-escupe, the combination, 'with e. base-cylinder attached to the tie, drain -or outlet, and a top cylinder having Suitable means of support and a removable grating, and being of sufficient length and diameter to extend above the high-Water mark,
and to telescope about heb? the eposed part of the base-cylinder, affording en annuler passage for the escape of the weterhof an inside cylinder provided with the screens vet either end, and with the enged top resting on the top of the said bnse-cylndel all subi stantially as set forth.
