FIG. 2-
UNITED MRNT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December l0, 1904. Serial N0. 236,370.
' Patented Jan. 23, 1906.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, VICTOR ErsELT, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Muggia, near Triest, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screw-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to screw-wrenches, and has for its object theoonstruction of a wrench enabling the adjustment of its movable aw to be effected very quickly and easily.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown by way 0f example how my said invention may be carried into effect.
Figure l is a side view, partially in section, showing the movable jaw locked to the stem. Fig. 2 is a section on the line A B of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 shows the movable jaw disengaged from the stem.
The fixed jaw a is carriedv by the stem or handle I), having its front part furnished with teeth c. In order to prevent injury to the teeth in the use of the wrench, a rib d is provided in the longitudinal direction of the stem or handle l in the middle of the teeth c, the said rib projecting to the front of these teeth, so that the nut e or the head of the screw to be turned may bear against the same, Fig. `1.
The movable j aw f has two cheeks g, which in the displacement of this jaw slide along the sides of the stem or handle b, the said cheeks being connected with each other at the rear by a bridge-piece 7L. The movable jaw f of the wrench is locked upon the stem or handle I) by the Jfollowing device.
On the outside of the bridge-piece h therev are two pairs of lugs i, these pairs being cone nected by pins y', upon which two armed levers are fitted to turn. The arms 7c of these levers terminate in hooks or noses Z, having a thickness e ual to the depth of the teeth c, so that when t e said noses are placed between the bridge-piece 7i and the stem or handle b the teeth of the movable jaw f will be held in engagement with the teeth of the said stem or handle. In this position the lever-arms 7c are kept by the other arms m forced outward through the medium of a plate n, subjected to the action of a spring o. When the movable jaw f is to be shifted upon the stem or handle b, a button p, made in one piece with the plate n, is depressed, so as to compress the spring o, Fig. 3 the said button by its under surface pressing at the same time upon the arms m, thereby removing the noses l from the space between the bridgeepiece 7L and stem or handle In practice the teeth may not with advantage be made less than a certain size, while the clear distance between the fixed and movable jaws should coincide as accurately as possible with the width across the flats of the nut e to be turned in order to obviate bruising the edges of the latter. For enabling the width Abetween the aws to be adjusted to a nicety I provide in the well-known manner in one of the jaws-say in the movable jaw f-a thumb-screw g, one end of which is connected with a clamping-plate r so as to turn therein. It is expedient to make the screw g of as large a diameter as possible in order that in the use of the wrench the screw-thread may not be liable to be crushed. The clamping-plate r is guided by a rib s, furnished on the latter and engaging with a corresponding groove t in the movable j awf, the faces ofthe said rib s extending as deeply as possible into the jaw to prevent jamming under strong pressure.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a screw-Wrench of the character described, a stem carrying the iixed jaw and provided with teeth, a rib formed on the stem in the middle of said teeth, a movable jaw furnished with teeth and a groove which are adapted to engage with the teeth and rib on the stem, levers pivoted to the rear end of said movable jaw, spring-actuated means for forcing these levers into engagement with said stem, a groove formed in the movable jaw, a clamping-plate, and a rib on this plate lit'ted slidably in said groove.
. 2. In a screw-wrench of the character described, a stem carrying the fixed jaw and provided with teeth, a rib formed on the stem in the middle of said teeth, a movable jaw furnished with teeth and a groove which are' adapted to engage with the teeth and rib on Ioo the stem, levers pivoted to the rear end of said movable jaw and having hook-shaped ends, spring-actuated means for forcing said hooked-shaped ends of the levers between said stem and movable aw, a groove formed 1o 5 in the latter, a clamping-plate, and a rib on this plate tted slidably in said groove.
.3. In a screw-wrench of the character described, a stem carrying the iixed jaw and provided with teeth, a rib formed on the stem r 1o in the middle of said teeth, a movable jaw furnished with teeth and a groove which are adapted to engage with the teeth and rib on the latter, a Clamping-plate, and a rib on this 1o plate itted slidably in said groove.
In testimony whereof I have signed my the stem, levers pivoted to the rear end of name to this specification in the presence of said movable jaw and having hook-shaped two subscribing witnesses.
ends, a button engaging these levers, a spring acting upon the said button for forcing said hook-shaped ends of the levers between said stem and movable jaw, a groove formed in VICTOR EISELT. Witnesses:
