Description
CALEB WHITMORE, OF NORTH VERNON, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 81,047, dated Aug/ust Il, 1868.
IMPROVED ROOK-DRILL.
fet-lic Stimuli nient-tu in liest ciiits girtciit mit making part nf tige same.
'TO ALL -WI-IOM IT MAY GONOERN:
Be it known that I, CALEB WIIITMORE', of North Vernon, Jennings county, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rock-Drilling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in thc art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
The nature of my invention and improvements consists in fastening a cylinder to the drill-stock, with diags onal grooves in its periphery, which grooves traverse on a stationary guide-pin, as the drill and its stock are traversed in the process of drilling; also, in certain automatic devices for holding the drillstock when it is turned, and traversing the carriage or frame that supports the drill-stock.
In the accompanying drawings-4 Figure 1 is a front elevation of a drilling-machine with my improvements.
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
In these drawings, A A are the side-sills, connected by the cross-sills B B, shown in dotted lines in fig. 1, being covered by the platform B.
The posts C C are fastened to the sills A. A, and connected at the top by the bar D.
The traversing-carriage or frame consists of the sides EVE, connected by the bars F F. The tenons oi' these bars extend through the sides, and project into grooves in the parts C C, which serve as ways for the earriageto traverse in the grooves, being shown by dotted lincs'in iig. I. v
4The bars F F project in front of the sides, as shown in fig. 2, and are perforated for the drill-stock G and guide-bar H. A l
The drill-stock Ur is arranged to traverse freely in the bars F F, and is provided with a collar, I, which has a pivot extending through the roller J intoa groove in the guide-bar H, to prevent the collar from turning with the drill-stock, whichpis made to turn freely in the collar, and is prevented from traversing in it by the shoulder under the collar and the ratchet-wheel K, fastened to the drill-stock above the collar.
The shaft L is fitted to turn in boxes N N, fastened to the sides E E, and may be provided with a crankgear or pulley, to turn it by some moving-power, and carry the tappet or cam P, fastened to the shaft, which cam acts against the roller J, and lifts the drill-stock and drill Q, and allows them to fall by their own weight; and the force of the drillmay be increased, when desired, by the spiral spring R, on the stock, above the collar I.
'Ihc grooved cylinder S is fastened to the stock G, and traverses with it, when the guide-pin T, acting against the inclined sides of the grooves in the periphery of the cylinder, turns the cylinder and drill-stocl a little way every time it is traversed, the guide-pin acting against the inclined sides ofthe grooves at the lower end of the cylinder when it rises, and the upper end when it falls, alternately.
'Ihe spring-pawl U is fastened to the collar I, to catch in the teeth of the ratchet K, and prevent the drillstockA from turning backwards.
To hold the carriage up, and allow it to descend as the hole is deepened, I make the screwV to turn in the nut W, fastened to the bar D, which screw extends -down through the bar F of the carriage, and has the bevelgear X fastened to its lower end, whiclris turned by the gear Y on the shaft Z, which shaft turns in the sides E E, and extends through a slot in` the post C, andfmay be provided with a crank, to turn itvand the screw, to move the carriage up and down, when required. i
'lo turn the-screw V and traverse the carriage down automatically, I fasten the ratchet-wheel a to the shaft Z, and the spring-pawl I to the collar I, so that when the stock and collar are traversed, the spring-catch will turn the ratchet one tooth every time the drill-stock advances far enough for the end ofthe catch to take the tooth, and thus lower the carriage very gradually.
What I claim as my inventionand improvement in the above-described rock-drilling, is-
The grooved 'cylinder S, made substantially as described, with the points of the upper inclined guides between the points of those below, in combination with the stationary guide-pini'l, for the purpose of turning the drill automatically as it is traversed. I
And in combination with the cylinder and guide-pin thus constructed for turning the drill, the ratchet K and pawl U,'for the purpose specified. v n
And in combination with the devicesi'or turning the drill, the ratchet wand pawl I), and their connections, for traversing the carriage and feeding the drill GALEB WmTMoRE. Witnesses HmAM PBATHER, vHAGUMAN TRIPP.
