ARTHUR SAMUEL PIERSON, or MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
iENSlON OR REINFORCING DEVICE ma USE IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed May 10, 1906. Serial No. 259,658.
To u, rely/Ht ll't nut concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR SAMUEL PIER- so:\', a citizen of the United States, residing at Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tension or Reinforcing Devices for Use in Concrete Structures of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, v
This invention relates to what are known as fireproof structures or buildings, and particularly buildings of this cl ass. which em- )loy columns, beams, girders, floors, and the like composed of concrete reinforced with metal bars,'ties, or other devices of various kinds and classes which are embedded in the concrete material; and the ob ect of the invention is to provide an improved tenslon or reinforcing'device for use in structures of the class specified and which may be employed in columns, beams, girders, and flooring composed of concrete or similar material or in making slabs or plates of any size for use in vault-lights or in similar places.
,The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which theaccompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in Which- Figure l is a side View of a tension or reinforcing device of the class specified made according to my invention, part of the construc tion being broken away; Fig. 2, a section on v the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. l, but showing a modification; and Fig. 4, a section on the'line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in. Figs. 1 and 2, I provide a trough-shaped bar a, composed of a flat sheet of metal tolded to form a deep groove a -in the top thereof,
and secured in this groove are continuous rods b and c, bent at regulari tervals to form elbows or knees b and 0 t e angle of the bends bein approximately right angles in the form 0? construction shown, and these rods 1) and a, bent in the manner described, are inserted into the groove a in the bar a, and the opposite side walls a are crirnped, bent, or forced inwardly between the separate elbows or knees of the rods?) and c and also between the separate side members of each elbow or knee of each of said rods, as
clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to secure the rods b and c in the bar a. The crimping or.,forcing inwardly of the sides of the barn may be done by means of a'hammer or in any. desired manner, and with this form'of construction it will be necessary to form the bar a of material thin enough to permit of this operation. 1 I
[n the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the rods I) and c are held in place by pins d, which are passed transversely through the opposite side walls of said bar and through or I within the elbows or knees of each of said rods, which are placed within the side walls of the bar, and with both forms of construc tion the rods 1) and c, bent in the manner described, are securely held in the bar a, With the form of construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the'bar a may be made in any desired manner, and any other suitable means maybe employed for securing the rods 1) and c to or in said bar, and my invention is not limited to the forms of the bar a herein shown and described, as other forms may be provided, if desired.
A tension or. reinforcing device'made in this manner possesses thegreatest possible tensional resistance and also the greatest possible resistance against compression in proportion to the amount of metal employed, and in practice a tension or reinforcing device made in this manner may be employed in columns, beams, girders, floor and ceiling construction, or in slabs, a number of said devices being placed parallel with each other and the cement, concrete, or other material being embedded around the same in the manncr of other devices of this class and as indicated in dotted lines at e, and although I certain forms of structural work, as a latticetruss or other independent feature, without being embedded in, connected with, or otherwlse relating to concrete-work. It will also be apparent that instead ofbending the rods b and c at regular intervals to form knees or elbows forming substantially right angles the said rods may be bent at regular intervals to form u Wardly and downwardly directed loops of any shape, the sides of said loops or bends when the rods are secured in the bar a, as herein described, crossing each other abovethe bar and projecting a certain distance above the bar, the particular shape or form of the loops or bends b and 0 being immaterial.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, ters Patent, is
l. A tension'or reinforcing device of the class described, comprising a bar and continuous rods bent at regular intervals to form oppositely direoted loops or elbows, said rods being placed together side by side so that the side portions of the loops or elbows cross each other, and the loops or elbows which project.
in the same directionbeing secured to said bar, substantially as shown and described.
2. A tension or reinforcing device of the class described, comprising a channel -bar and continuous rods bent at regular intervals to form loops or elbows, said rods being placed together side by side so that the side portions of said loops orelbows cross each other and the loops or elbows which extend and desire to secure by Letwhich project in the same direction in the same direction being secured in said bar, substantially as shown and described.
3. A tension or reinforcing device of the class described, comprisinga channel'-. bar and continuous rods bent at regular intervals to form loops or elbows, said rods being placed together side by "side so that the side portions of said loops or elbows cross each other and the loops or elbows which extend in the same direction being secured in said bar by means of pins passed through the side walls thereof and through said loops or elbows, substantially as shown and described.
4. A tension or reinforcing device of the class'described, comprising a bar and a plurality of continuous rods bent at regular intervals' to form oppositely-directed loops or elbows, said rods being placed side by side so that the side portions of the loops or elbows cross each other and the loops or eltlpows elng permanently-secured to said bar, substantially as shown and described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 8th day of May, 1905.
ARTHUR SAMUEL PIERSON.
