sion and to spring upwardly therefrom to an erected position when the tension is released. The spring is normally tied down by a thread or wire 7, secured to the spring and passing down through opening 8 in the shell and around the fuse 4, as in Figs. 2 and 5.
Upon blowing, the thread or wire is loosened from the fuse, releasing the spring, which then flies up, as in Fig. 3, carrying with it the thread or wire, so that in this raised position it is readily observed and immediately indicates the blown condition of the fuse.
Various other forms of springs or signal devices maybe substituted for the construction shown, or the invention may be varied from in other respects by the skilled mechanic or electrician; but all such changes and variations are to be considered as within the scope of the following claim.
\Vhat I claim is In an electric fuse, the combination of a cylindrical shell or casing provided with simi lar terminal circuit-contacts, an inclosed fuse of limited resistance connected with said terminal contacts, an outer spring device secured on the side of the main shell adapted to be bent down against the surface thereof for its full length, a thread device attached to the end of said spring passing through an opening in the shell and looped around the fuse, adapted to retain the spring in a retracted position closely against the shell under tension, and to allow it to rise with the thread device exposing both the spring and thread to view, upon burning of the fuse, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.

To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. RnoADEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at i Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful i Improvements in Electric SafetyFuses, of i which the following is a specification, refer ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved indicating-fuse. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line II II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the fuse after blowing. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a fuse employing a flat spring. Fig. 5 is a cross-section, en-
My invention relates to an improvement in the class of electric fuses or cut-outs; and it consists in providing such a fuse with means for indicating its condition immediately upon blowing, consisting of a spring indicator adapted to be released by the blow and to become erected into view.
Referring to the drawings, 2 is the shell of the'fuse, provided with the usual contact ends 3 3, connected by an interior fuse 4 of suitable resistance for the objects in view and preferably surrounded by a filling 5 of any suitable material. I have discovered that by exerting-a lateral tension upon the fuse 4,110 matter how slight, the blow will primarily occur at such point and have utilized this phenomenon in my invention, although the ordinary blowing of a fuse will usually op- Secured upon the outside of the shell 2 by a screw 5 or other suitable means is a springarm 6, made of a coiled wire, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or of a flat leaf-spring 6, as in Fig. 4, or of any other suitable form adapted to be drawn down upon the shell under ten-
