Description

PATENTEDJAN. 9, 1906.
A. STENWALL.
SLIDE GATE VALVE.
APPLICATION FILED DBO.24,1904.
Q INVENTOR ALFRED STENIVALL, OF KEWVANEE, ILLINOIS.
SLIDE-GATE VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Application filed December 24, 1904. Serial No. 238.256.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED STENWALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slide-Gate Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Slide-gate valves as almost universally constructed are provided with screw -stems to raise and lower the gates, and the speed or motion of the gates by such means is necessarily, of course, limited according to the pitch of threads used, requiring several full revolutions of the valve-stem fully to open or to close the gates.
The object of my invention, therefore, is largely to increase the degree of rapidity of motion of the gates to the end that a fraction of a turn only of the valve-stem shall be amply suflicient fully to open or to close the gates. The desirability and value of my construction are apparent, as almost instant communication through the valve or stoppage of the flow therethrough may be effected, as well as a great saving of time.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved form of slide-gate valve which will operate in an exceedingly rapid and thoroughly efiicient manner and the parts of which shall not be liable to get out of order.
WVith these objects in view, as well as others which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my valve. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the valve-stem and of one of the valvegates carried thereby. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of one of the gates. Fig. I is a central vertical section of my invention embodied in an angle gate-valve, and showing a difierent form of stuffing-gland, and Fig. 5 is a detail top plan of the stuffing-gland shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the valve-body, provided with internally-threaded ends 0, preferably 'of shape to conform to standard-sized piping and with an extension 0/, having an annular flange c exteriorly threaded, on which is secured a hood (5, provided with a similar flange a", interiorly threaded. The extension a provides an interior chamber a. The barrel portion a of the hood may be interiorly threaded a portion of its length for the reception of a stuffinggland a, similarly threaded, and in addition packing (6 may be utilized in the barrel portion, which packing is tightly pressed by the gland a, preventing leakage of fluid around the valve-stem a Interiorly of the valve body A may be two annular flanges forming valve-seats-a". The valve-stem a is formed threadless and preferably carries the usual handle c and the stufi ing arrangement a and a already described, serves as a frictional means sufficient to retain the valvestem in any adjusted position and to overcome the force of gravity tending to make the valvestem drop after being raised. the lower end of the valve-stem is a beveled gear-pinion a, and carried by the stem a is a grate-carrying member comprising a substantially horizontal plate a, swiveled on the stem at". Directly above the pinion a is an armed or forked yoke a, depending from this plate (0 the yoke being provided with a hole a through its lower portion.
The valve-gates are each provided on one side with a smooth face a to engage the smooth inner face of the valve-seats a, with beveled spur-teeth (o around the edge of its other face a to mesh with the pinion a and with a projection a also on the face a the projection being formed on its end with a cam (6 The projections to exactly fit into but have free rotary movement in the opening a of the yoke a, the yoke thus serving to keep the gates spaced apart a properdistance.
Desirably one row each of rack-teeth a is formed in two of the walls of the internal chamber (0 of extension (0 (the two rows being preferably disposed diagonally opposite each other) and are engaged by the beveled spur-teeth a of the gates.
The operation is as follows: The sliding gates being at the extreme downward limit of their range of movement, rotary movement of the valvestem by its handle in one direction imparts similar movement to its beveled gear-pinion a, the teeth of which are in mesh with the teeth a of the gates, thus imparting rolling movement to the gates, the teeth a Integral with of which are also in mesh with the rack-teeth (6 in the walls of chamber (L22, the gates thereby rolling up on the rack-teeth (0 Only a part of a turn of the valve-stem is fully sufficient entirely to open the gates, frictional engagement of the valve-stem with the tightlywedged packing a holding the valve-stem in any adjusted position. Only part revolution of the stem in the reverse direction will quickly close the gates, and when they are at the extreme downward limit of their range of movement the cams (0 on the inner faces of the gates abut, thus spreading the gates outward slightly or away from each other, causing the outer smooth faces a of the gates firmly to engage the annular flanges or valve-seats a, insuring that communication through the valve-body A shall be entirely closed and that there shall be no possible leakage around the gates.
Fig. 4 shows my invention applied to an angle gate-valve, in which E represents the inlet portion of the valve-body and B the exit thereof at an angle to the inlet. All parts or my invention are the same as shown in the previous figures of the drawings.
In large valves it may be advisable to utilize means in addition to the frictional contact of the packing with the valve-stem, as already described, for holding the valve-stem in any desired raised or partly-lowered position. In
Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown what I term a functionsnamely, to lock the valve-stem in any desired position of vertical adjustment and to pack the stufling a in the barrel portion a of the device. For these purposes I construct the locking packing-gland with a split body portion 0, externally threaded at its lower end to engage with the internal threads of the barrel portion (4 thus tightly to pack the stuffing (b and prevent any leakage around the valve-stem, and with a correspondingly split head 0. Through the head 0 passes a tightening-screw 0 in the head 0 of which is swiveled a turning-handle 0*, all as shown clearly in Figs. 4 and 5. The operation of this split locking packing-gland is obvious and provides an efi icient means of positively locking the stem in any desired raised or partially-lowered position and at the same time to pack the stufiing around the valve-stem in the barrel portion, thus to prevent any leakage.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letter Patent, is
