UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERICH SANDNER, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN SUCTION GAS PRODUCER COMPANY, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, A
CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
GAS-PRODUCER.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Application filed June 26, 1905. Serial No- 267,140.
To (bl Z IU/2/077'2/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enron SANDNER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Suction Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to suction gas-pr0 ducers, and more particularly to that type in which the fuel within the gas-producing chamher is supported directly upon the hearth.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction as hereinafter set forth and particularly in the means employed for supporting the mass of fuel while removing the ashes and clinker. V
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the lower portion of the producer. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional view taken in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
A is the casing, which is provided with the lining B, of fire-brick or other refractory material, and preferably inclined at its lower portion to contract the fuelchamber C.-
D is a hearth beneath the chamber C, and E represents laterally extending passages through which the air and vapor are drawn to the fuel upon the hearth, these passages eX- tending out through the casing A and being normally closed by a door or cover F.
l/Vith a producer of this construction in normal operation the fuel supported directly on the hearth is in the path of the commingled air and vapor entering through the passages E, and thus combustion and decomposition will be producd within the center of the mass of fuel, resulting in the production of As the fuel is consumed the ash will accumulate upon the hearth, as well as a certain amount of clinker, and therefore it is necessary to remove these from time to time through the ash-door F. Inasmuch as the fuel is supported solely by the hearth, whenever there is an accumulation of clinker it is difficult to remove the same without also drawing away some of the unconsumed fuel. To overcome this difficulty, I have devised a construction of temporary grate which may be used for supporting the fuel above the hearth during the operation of cleaning and removing the clinker, this grate being of the following construction: G represents separate grate-bars which are adapted to be inserted one at a time into the mass of fuel above the hearth. For supporting and guiding these bars a slot ted bed-plate H is placed within the lining B and extends out through the casing A at one side thereof. This bed is provided with a plurality of parallel guide-slots therein, each adapted to receive one of the bars, and to prevent friction or binding of the bars in the slots they are centrally enlarged, so as to form separated bearings a 1), respectively, at the inner and outer edges of the bed. WVith this construction whenever it is desired to clean out the hearth the bars G are successively inserted through the slots in the bed II and pressed through the mass of fuel until their ends abut against the opposite wall of the casing. WVhen all of the bars are inserted, the operator may then remove the clinker beneath the bars and resting upon the hearth, after which the bars are withdrawn and the fuel supported again upon the hearth. After the removal of the bars the openings through which they are inserted are closed by a detachable cap I, secured to the bed H. Another advantage of the construction is that by removing the bed-plate II, which can be slipped out from the slot in the casing, a sufficient opening is made for the ready removal of clinker adhering to the walls of the firechamber above the hearth.
That I claim as my invention is 1. In a gas-producer, the combination with a casing containing a fuel-chamber and a hearth upon which the mass of fuel is normally supported, of means for temporarily supporting the fuel above the hearth comprising a series of separate grate-bars, and parallel centrally-enlarged guide-bearings through which said bars may be successively inserted and forced through the mass of fuel.
2. In a gas-producer, the combination with a casing containing a fuel-chamber and a hearth upon which the fuel in said chamber is normally supported, of means for tempora: rily supporting the fuel above said hearth comprising a series of separate grate-bars, and a bed within said casing at one side of the fuel-chamber having centrally-enlarged slots forming parallel guide-bearings through which said bars may be successively inserted or removed.
3. In a gas-producer, the combination with a casing containing a fuel-chamber and a hearth for normally supporting the fuel Within said chamber, of the bed H arranged at one side of said casing having the parallel slots therein, the grate-bar G separately insertible through said slots and extending in parallel relation across the fuel-chamber above the hearth, and the detachable cap I for closing said slotted bed when the bars are removed.
4. In a gas-producer, the combination with a casing containing a fuel-chamber and a hearth upon which. the mass of fuel is normally supported, of a grate insertible into said chamber above the hearth to form a temporary support for the fuel, and a centrallyenlarged bearing at the side of the casing through which the grate is inserted forming a support for the projecting portion of the latter.
5. In a gasproducer the combination with a casing containing a fuelchamber and a hearth upon which the mass of fuel is normally supported, of a removable bed-plate inserted within a slot in one side of said casing above the hearth for the purpose described.
6. In a gas-producer, the combination with a casing containing a fuel-chamber and a hearth for normally supporting the fuel within said chamber, of a bed-plate inserted within a slot in said casing above the hearth forming a guide-bearing and support for temporary grate-bars, said bed-plate being removable to provide access to the fire-pot for dislodging adhering clinkers.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERICH SANDNER.
