Application filed May 20, 1905. Serial No. 261,390.A
To a/Z whom it muy concern,.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. RHoADs, a
citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia, .in the county o' Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of Jwhich the following is a specification. i This invention relates to improvements in hose-couplings, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, effective, and reliable coupling whose parts may be quickly and conveniently connected and disconnected and will be securely held from casual displacement when connected, and, further, to provide a coupling having a valve which is automatically opened when the coupling-sections are engaged and closed when said sections are disengaged to prevent escape of the fluid or liquid.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichpassage of the fluid or liquid. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same, the members of the coupling being separated. Figs. 3 and 4 are elevational views looking toward the meeting ends of the members of the coupling. Fi 5 is a plan view of the male member, the loc 'ng sleeve or ring being removed; and Fig. 6 is a detail longitudinal section through the head of the female member.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the male and'2 the female members of the coupling,
which members are respectively provided with externally-threaded serrated stems or Shanks 3 and 4 for the attachment of the hosesections thereto, the male section 1 being attached in practice to the proximal hose-section or that connected directly or closer to the source4 of supply of the fluid or liquid flowing through the hose.
The-member 1 comprises a head 5, having v a chamber or socket 6, communicating at one end with the bore of the shank and open at its opposite end and provided with an inward yprojecting reducing-flange 7, from which extends a tubular projection 8. On
the exterior of the head 5 are spaced annular flanges 9` and 10, forming supports and guide members for a locking sleeve or ring 11,'said ring being free to slide longitudinallyon the hea'd, `but held fromv rotation thereon by a screw or stop-pin 12, projecting into a short groove or recess 13 in the iange 10, so as to permit the ring to have but a slight rotary movement. The groove 13 is open on its rear side, so as to permit the ring to have rear sliding movement, the forward movement of the ring being limited by the engagement of the screw with the front side wall of the groove or recess. Arranged within the s ace or chamber formed between the ring an the two flanges 9 and 10 is a coiled spring 14, which bears at one end against the flange 9 and at its opposite end against the screw 12,
and guiding projections or bosses 15, formed l at its outer or forward edge with locking projections 17, two of which are inte al with the said guiding projections 15, Whi e the tubular rojection 8 is formed at a suitable distance eyond the flange 10 with locking-lugs 18, having inclined or cam-shaped inner surfaces 19.
Projecting into the socket 6-is a cylindrical valve-casing 20, provided with s aced series of ports or passages 2l arranged t erearound. This casing is rovided at its outer end with an outturned ange 22, which bears against the outer side of the flange 7, the casing extendin through the restricted openingformed by sai flange and being supported in position thereby. The hea 5 and-fiange 7 are vformed with openings for the passage of. screws23 which detachably secure the valvel ICO about the stem between said washer and the inner end of the casing is a coiled spring 31, which holds the valve from outward movement and exerts suflicient resistance to prevent the same from casually turning out of adjusted position.
The female member 2 comprises a head 32,l
having a socket or chamber 33, provided adjacent to its inner end with an annular flange 34 to hold the flanged inner end of a packingring or gasket 35 in osition therein. The chamber 33 is ada te to receive the tubular projection 8 on t emale member l, which projection is adapted to fit about the packing-rinor or gasket 35, 'the inner face of the ring and outer face of the gasket being beveled or inclined to form a fluid and Water tight joint when the members of the cou ling are brought into enga ing relation. T e outer end of the head 32 is formed with notches 36y to receive and interlock with the locking projections 17 on the locking-ring 11 and is also formed with an annular groove 37 to receive the locking-lugs 18 on the tubular projection 8. The formation of the notches 36, which serve vas entrances to the groove 37, causes the pro duction of intervening and alternatelyarranged projections 38, which extend inwardly and form outer walls 39 for the grooves between the notches, the inner faces of these walls being inclined or cam-shaped to coperate with the' inclined or cam-shaped inner faces 19 of the lugs 18. The outer end of thepassage or bore of the stem 4 is coun- ,terbored to receive the inner end of a tubular valve-actuating member 40, which is soldereddi' otherwise xedly'mounted therein. The outer end of themember 40 is provided with projections 41 to interlock with the ,projections 26 on the valve when the members of the '-the sections closely together.
one of the members is partia ly rotated upon' the other to bring the pro'ections 38 into lockmg engagement with the ugs 18, the inclined or cam surfaces of said parts serving to draw This adjustment brings the notches 36 of the member 2 in position to be engaged by the projections 17 of the ring 11, whichlatter is then released to permit its spring to force it into locking env gagement, whereby the two members of the couphng will be held from relative rotation and disconnection. When the members are coupled in the manner described, the interlocking projections upon the valve and valveactuating member are brought into engagement, and the partial rotation of one member upon the 'other thereby causes the valve,
" 'adapted toV which is always closed When the sections are disconnected, to be turned until the ports in the valve and valve-casing register, thus ermittin of the flow of the water or uid throng lthe coupling. To disconnect the coupling, the 'ring 1l is forced backward and one ofthe members rotated upon the other until the projections 38 pass lout of'engagement with the lugs 18 and lie in line with the spaces between the same, whereu on the members will be throWn'out of loc ing engagement and may be readily disconnected by a relative endwise vmovement, The latter-named rotation of the member in disconnecting the parts of the coupling resultsin the valve being turned until the Orts-are out of register, thus cutting off the ow of the water or fluid from the section l to the section 2 and preventing wastage when the parts are vdisconnected. s
Havin thus described the invention, what is claime as new is-. 5
1. A coupling comprising interlocking sections, one of said sectionshaviii a portion to fit Within the other, a gasket wit in the latter section dis osed to form a spacefor the rece tion ofsai portion and to bear against t e inner face thereof, interconnecting valve and valve-operating devices carried by the respective sections, and means for maintaining the valve in closed position when the sections are se arated, the valve-operating'sectionI being a apted to open the valve when thesections are connected and being rovided with airpassages for the escape of uid-pressure to act upon the gasket, substantially as described.
2. A coupling comprising interlockingfmale and female members, the male member being IOO provided with a projection to enter the female member, a gasket within the female member adapted to bear against said projection, a valve axially arranged within the male member, an axially'- arranged valve-operating device arranged within the female member, said operating device being adapted to engage and turn the valve to open or closed position when the members areconnected .or f
disconnected, .the valve-operating device being provided with ports for the esca e of fluid to subject the gasket at all times to uid-pressure. i 3. A coupling comprising male and female members vprovided .with interlocking means adapted to be engaged and disengagedfby a longitudinal and rotary movement of one member` relative to tl'ie other member, the male -member being provided with a projection to enter the female member, a valve-casing axia/lly disposed within the male member "and rovided with ports, a rotary valve disposed within said casing'and provided with cooperating ports and an outer coupling en d means for maintaining the valve in adjusted position, a asket, within thefemale member ear against the projection on the male member, and an aXially-arrangedvvalveoperating device disposed within the female member provided with an interlocking portion to engage the valve, and with ports for the passage of fluid to place the gasket under pressure; said valve and valve-operating device being thrown into and out of coupling 'engagement by the longitudinal movement of one section upon the other section and actuated to open or close the valve by the rotary 1o movement of one section upon the other section. i ,f
