produce, neat in appearance, and strong and durable, and consequently well adapted to withstand the usage to which back-pads are ordinarily subjected.

The invention will be fully understood vfrom the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which* Figure l is an elevation of my novel and advantageous back-pad.- Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken through the longitudinal center of the pad; and Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sections taken in the planes indicated by the lines 4 4 and 5 5, res ectively, of Fig. 3.

'This body or back is designed to lend the requisite stiness to the ad and preserve the shape of the same, and) it is preferably composed of an inner strip a of comparatively sti material and an outer strip b of leather or other material compatible with the character of the invention. The said body or back is preferably provided with fixtures c for the connection of turrets (not shown) and when desired the means employed to connect the said xtures c may be utilized to assist in connecting the strips a and Z) together, as shown. The body or back is also provided, by preference, with apertures d, designed to ventilate the pad-llings presently described.

B is the bottom layer of the pad. This bottom layer is one piece of leather or other suitable material and is provided with swells e, designed to receive hairor other suitable fillings f, longitudinal bights g, arranged to receive the longitudinal edges of the body or back A, and end bights h, arranged to receive the ends of said body or back. By virtue of the formation of the bights g and 7L integral with the layer B it will be apparent that the layer B presents a smooth unbroken surface to the back of a horse, also that said layer B receives all of the other parts of the pad and is in a measure connected of itself to said other parts. This latter removes a considerable portion ofthe strain from the stitches or other connecting means, and thereby contributes materially to the strength and durability of the pad as a whole, and it also contributes materially to the facility with which the parts may be assembled precedent to connection thereof through the medium of stitches or other means.

The-several described parts of the pad are relatively arranged as shown in the drawings-that is to say, the swells e of the bottom layer are disposed below the body A and at opposite sides of the transverse center of said body, the fllingsf are contained in the swells and interposed between the same and the body, the bights g are arranged over the edges of the body, and the bights ZL are disposed over the ends of the body. With the parts thus arranged the upper and lower portions of the longitudinal bights g are connected together and to the body A by stitches Zr, the bights Zt are similarly connected to the body A by stitches Z, and the intermediate portions of the body A and the bottom layerB are connected together by transverse rows of stitches m. From this it follows that the stitches Ze, Z, and m serve the twofold function of connecting the body A and the bottom layer B and preserving the outlines ofthe swells e and retaining the iillingsf in said swells. It will also be observed that the body, the bottom layer; and the fillings may be quickly and easily assembled and as expeditiously fastened together, which conduces materially to the inexpensiveness of the pad.

While I prefer to employ stitches Zc to connect the upper and lower portions of the bights g together and to the body A, stitches Z toconnect the upper and lower portions of the bights Zt together and to the body A, and stitches m to connect the intermediate portions of the body A and the bottom layer B together, I desire it understood that any other suitable connections may be employed without involving a departure from the scope of. my invention as claimed.

While the pad is made up of but few parts in the manner ldescribed in the foregoing, it will be noted that it is neat and finished in appearance and is well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which the back-pads of working harness are ordinarily subjected.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A harness-pad comprising a body or back, iillings disposed below said body or back, at opposite sides of the transverse center of the same7 a bottom layer in which the fillings and the body or back are arranged; said bottom layer being one piece of material and having. longitudinal bights receiving the edges of the body or back throughout the length of said edges and end bights receiving the opposite ends of the body or back throughout the length of said ends, and means extending through and connecting the opposite portions of the longitudinal and end bights together WILLIAM L.
