IMPROVEMENT IN HOSE-TENDERS.
@5112 fitlgrbnlr referrer tn it tlgsst itetta s patent mrt mattng part at figs same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY concerns;
Be it known that I HENRY A, GILBEItTSON, of New York, in thccountyof New York, and State of New .York, have invented, made, and applied to-u'se certain new and .useful Improvements in Hose-Tenders 0r Oarriages; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, referencc being had to theannexed drawings, making part of this specification, which represents, in-- Figure 1, a perspective view of my improvement, and in i Figure 2 a. plan'of the same. n Similar marks of'r'eference denote the same parts. I v The object of my invention'is to produce a hose-tender or carriage that shall have a covering for the wheels, to protect firemen, while riding on the hose-reel, from coming in contact with the wheels, and at the same time providing seats onsaid covering, so that they can ride on the apparatus in going to the fire.-
' a a are the wheels, over which are coverings -or protectors, b b, the upper portions, 0 c c 0, being formed into seats. d is a brace firmly secured to the seat on each side of the reel t. ffff are the supports for the feet, the whole covering or protector being supported by the pieces 9 g, running across themain shafts 2' 2', and projecting beyond said shafts.
In making hose-tenders with my improvement, I have accomplished an object that has been long wanted, namely, a protector for the wheels, that will prevent accidents to firemen, while riding to fires, by coming in contact with the wheels, and forming said protectors into seats. i I
My drawing shows-a hose-tender withtwo wheels, having seats that will accommodate four persons; but do 7 not confine myself to two-wheel apparatus, as four-wheel apparatus can be made on my improvement, either by making pne covering large enoughto cover both wheels .on a side, making two'seats each side, or a covering i'or each wheel, making four seats each side.
I am aware that wagons and carts have been made with similar coverings to those I claim, and do not claim broa'dly vehicles with protectors over the wheels formed into seats, but simply as applied to hose-tenders or carriages for fire-department purposes.
It will be seen'by the drawing, that the running-gear and reel for holding the hose are made in the usual way, my tender differing from the ordinary tender inhaving pieces crossing and projecting from the main shafts, for supporting the coveringfor the wheels, said covering made of metal, wood, or any other suitable material, and made'in one or more pieces, and flat at the top, being curved until it reaches the foot-piecef, which is turned up at the proper angle; and in order to support the seats firmly, I provide a brace, d, which. is'firmly secured to the seats each side( When an alarm of fire occurs, four firemen can comfortably ride'to the fire (without dangerof injury from the wheels) on the seats that I provide, which is of great, importance, as hose-tenders, when drawn by horses, in a great many. cases, arrive at the fire without suflieient men to unreel the hose," causing delay; audit is well known that the cfiieiency of a fire-company depends upon the length of time it requires to get to work after the alarm has been given. i
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
A hose-tender or carriage, having-coverings or protectors b 6, seats 0 c c c, and brace d, in substantially th manner described and shown, and for the purposes set forth. 1 H. A. GILBERTSON.
