Description

sAM-UEL e, DAR-E, oFpNEfw YORK, N. Y.
Letters .Pte/nt No. 80,925, 4(lated August '1868.
IMPROVBD CARPET-STRTGHER..
@the dgettlt referat tu in ,these tettett ttsu't unt mating mrt ttlgt same.
ToALL wHoM 1T MAY conceals:-
Beit known that I, SAMUEL G. DARE, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Carpet-Stretcher; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of a carpet-stretcher, constructed according to my improvement, and
Figure 2 represents an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate'corresponding parts'in both figures.
This invention consistsin a carpet-stretcher of .Inovelconstructiom whereby it is made to act on the under side or back of the carpet, Vand thereby not only to obviate theinjury which is done to carpets b y the ordinary stretehers'operating on the upper side or face, but to stretch the carpet mo'r'e effectively.
In order that others may be better enabled `to understand the constructionand operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings. Y l
A is a metallic plate or strip, oi' suitable dimensions, and provided with teeth. or" claws, a, on its upper edge, and corresponding ones, designated 4by b, on its lower; the points otk-said teeth or claws being turned in opposite directions, for the purpose of engaging respectively with the floor below and the carpet above.
B is a movable head, carrying the handle c, and provided with a groove or notch, ci, in each end for the purpose of its adjustment to either end of the plate A, slots, g gi, being therein provided for reception of studs e e in the grooves d UZ.A Y
'lhe'handle` c is constructed curved or bent, for the purpose of affording more convenience of manipulation while the apparatus is'beng operated under the carpets edge. j
In the operation of this invention, the plate or strip A is inserted atways under the edge of the1 carpet, transversely to the direction in which the carpet is to be drawn, and with the points of the teeth a curved upwards, so as to be in positionV to engage with the texture of the under side of the carpet, while 'the teethrb, curving downwards, are in position to engage with the planks of thc-door. --The plate A should be so placed or located in this operation as to permitthe handle c to project from under the carpet. The said handle, c, is then turned or moved in `a direction to elevate .the edge of the plate A, upon which .are provided the teeth e, which immediately engage' with `the texture of the under side of the carpet, and carry it with them, the plate A using the teeth b as a fulcrurn upon which to turn. l i
YA suflicient number of forward and backward movements of the lever o r handle c will bring the edge of the carpet to the desired position to be tacked; the operator meanwhile using his own weight upon the carpet, for retaining, during the backward movements of the lefver, what is gained inthe forward movements of the same.'
What is here claimed, and desired to he secured by Letters Patent, .isi A carpet-stretcher, having its teeth, a and b, and movable handle cfarrangcd substantially as described, whereby it is caused to act uponl the under side of the carpet,` substantially as herein described.`
