IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.

TO ALL 'WHOM'IT MAY oononan:
Be it known that we, JOHN Bnnso'n, EPIIRAIM DANIELS, and JbANNA FARRELL, of 257 West Thirty-First street, in the'city, county,'and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp- Burners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing, forrning part of this specificationflnwhich drawingi i i Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of our improvement.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section. I
This invention relates to means for operating the wicks of lamps, and eonsists,in general terms, in making the parts which raise and lower 'the wick in such a manner thatthey will not injure the wick, and also in such a manner that they can be easily adjusted so as to take hold of the wick with more or less pressure, as may be desired. I
In carrying out our invention, we employ rollers, whose peripheries may be roughened or serrated, or left smooth, as may be preferred,'.and said rollers are so arranged that they are on opposite sidesof the wick-tube, through openings wherein their peripheries project, so as to take hold of the wick.
The letter Adesignates the usual metalliecase which closes the top of a lamp, and which usually sustains the wiek-tube,-and encloses the wick-feeding apparatus. The letter B designates the wick-tube, whose sides, opposite the feeding-apparatus, are cutaway, as at J J, to allow the peripheries of the feeding-rollers D D to approach the wick C, which is contained in said tube. .The feeding-roller D is mounted in bearings in the'sides of a fixed frame or box, F, that extends across the case, past both edges of the wick and wick-tube, and its shaft projects through and beyond the case A far enough to receive, on one end,.a wheel, E, by means of which it is turned. The feed-roller D is mounted in a movable box, G, which is arranged and fitted to slide-within the fixed frame F, as is shown most clearly in fig. 2, being moved to and fro therein towards the feed-roller D, or in a reverse direction, bymeahs of a screw, I, whose inner end is connected to the sliding box G in such a manner as to turn thereon, and whose screw-thread works in a screw-thread tapped in the boss K, formed in the wall of the case or shell A. The ends of the axis of feed-roller D extend through and beyond the'ends of the sliding box G, into horizontal slots H H, formed in theends of the fixed frame F, which slots,.a.ocordingly, in
conjunction \vith the axis of roller D, form guides for the movements of the. sliding b'ox G and its feed-roller, and also support them in the frame F. Instead of supporting and guiding the feed-roller D and its box in the frame'R the sides of case A can be used for that purpose, and the roller 'D-can be also supported in bearings formed in case A. a i
The rollers D D are, in this example, made with smooth peripheries, but they can be more or less roughened,
or one can be smooth and the-other rough. We also modify them by reducing their diameter in their middle or central parts, so that they will only take hold of the wick at their ends, and at those parts'where they are left of their full diameter. I
In operating and using our invention, we adjust the roller D, by means of its screw I, to such a position, with respect to the opposite roller D, as to compress the wiekC, interposed between, sufil ciently to feed it or move it upwards or downwards, as may be necessary. I Our invention enables us to operate a trick with ease and exactness, and without tearingth'e wick, as is often done by the serrated feeding-disks now commonly used.
What we claiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the ordinary stationary roller D, the roller D", mounted on a sliding box, G, operated by the swirel-serew K, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Subscribed, in presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of March, 1868. x Y i JOHN BARSON,
EPHRAIM DANIELS, JOANNA FARRELL.
