Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holmen, in the county of La Orosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Barrels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in gun-barrels.
The object of the invention is to provide a choking device for gun-barrels whereby the same will be caused to shoot close at long range and which will materially increase the carrying power or force of the shot.
\Vith the above and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the outer end of the gun-barrel having formed therein a choking device constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the gun-barrel.
Referring more particularly to the draw-- ings, 1 denotes the barrel of a shotgun, in the outer end of which is formed an annular series of dents or depressions 2, which are formed in said end of the barrel by punching or upsetting the same with a suitable tool or instrument. In forming the dents or depressions 2 the instrument is held in such position that the inner wall of the barrel will be bulged or forced inwardly to a slight degree, thereby forming a series of corrugations, the size and length of which will be determined by the depth of the dents or depressions struck in the end of the barrel.
By means of the corrugations 3 the shot in passing out of the barrel will come into engagement with the former, which will direct the course of the shot to cause the same to travel closely together, thereby preventing the wide scattering of the same when shot at long range. The closeness at which said shots are caused to travel may be determined by forming the corrugations to a greater or less depth, as will be understood. By causing the shot to travel more closely together the distance at which the same will travel will be materially increased.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

The herein-described gun-barrel having an annular series of indentations formed in the end of the muzzle thereof and a series of corrugations inside the bore of the muzzle, said corrugations being formed by the displacement of the metal caused by forming the indentations.
