NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed September 2,1905. Serial No. 276,888.
To (a l whom it Wtay concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. UHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buflalo, in
the county of Erie and State of New York,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to closures for receptacles, such as bottles, jars, and the like; and its primary object is to provide a device of this character which will prevent a receptacle from being refilled, thereby obviating any liability of the sale of a substitute article for that contained originally in the receptacle, whereby the sale of fine wines, liquors, medicines, and perfumes may be protected.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure which is comparatively simple of construction, cheap to manufacture, durable, and efficient.
The invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where m Figure l is a central sectional view of the upper portion of a receptacle, illustrating the application of my improved closure. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detailed central sectional view of the combined locking member and valve-casing. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the valve, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the guard or plug.
Referring to the drawings byreference-numerals, 1 designates the neck of a receptacle, the same being provided at a point intermediate its ends with recesses 2. A guard or plug 3, which is preferably constructed ofglass, is positioned within the neck 1. This guard is of a cylindrical formation and has a diameter slightly less than the inner diameter of the neck 1, in order that the guard may fit snugly within the neck, said guard being provided with perimetral tortuous passages 4, through which the contents of the receptacle is poured. The guard at a point adjacent its u per end is provided with two diametrical y-opposed recesses 5, which are adapted to register with the recesses 2 in the neck 1. Extending from the recesses 5 to the bottom of the guards are grooves 6, which incline downwardly and outwardly, as fully illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
I provide an aluminium member which performs the dual function of securing the guard in applied position within the neck and of supporting and carrying the valve which prevents the receptacle from being refilled. This member is fully illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings and consists of a valve-casing 7, which is of a diameter equal to the diameter of the guard 3 and which is provided with a valve-opening 8. The upper edge of the casing 7 is situated closely to the bottom of the guard 3, and rising vertically therefrom and positioned within the grooves 6 are arms 9, these arms having their upper ends bent to provide heads 10, portions of which are situated in the recesses 2 and 5. A valve 11 is positioned within the casing 7 prior to the application of the member to the guard 3. The valve is provided with a pendent portion 12, adapted to fit in and project through the opening 8, and on its upper edge with lugs 13, which engage the bottom of the guard 3 to limit the movement of the valve from its seat.
' Before the closure is inserted within the neck 1 the guard, valve, and member are assembled, and owing to the inclination of the groove 6 the closure may be easily inserted into the neck 1. When the heads 10 are brought into alinement with the recesses 2 in the neck 1, said heads through virtue of the spring quality of the arms 9 are forced into said grooves 2, thereby limiting the downward movement of the closure and locking the same in applied position.
It is apparent that an instrument cannot be inserted so as to prevent the seating of the valve 11 and that said member performs a dual function of securing the closure within the neck 1 and supporting and carrying the valve, thus obviatlng the necessity of forming a valve-seat within the neck.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention will be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction maybe made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having fully described and illustrated my invention What I claim is 1. In a device of the character stated, the combination with the neck of a receptacle, of a guard, a valve, and means for supporting the valve and locking the guard in applied position. Y
2. In a device of the character stated, the combination with the neck of a receptacle, of a guard arranged within the neck, a valvecasing, means carried by the valve-casing to secure the guard in applied position, and a valve mounted Within the casing.
3. In a device of the character stated, the combination with the neck of a receptacle, of
a guard mounted Within said neck, a valvecasing provided with an arm and a lockinghead to secure the guard in applied position, and a valve mounted within the casing.
4. In a device of the character stated, the combination with the neck of a receptacle provided with a recess, of a guard provided with a recess and an inclined groove, a valvecasing provided with an arm occupying said
