CAR-FENDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed August 11, 1905. Serial No. 273.752.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI OAMPANARI, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Fender, ofwhich the following is afull, clear, and
exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in street-railway car-fenders, the object being to provide afender so constructed that when not required for use it may be easily and conveniently folded against the dashboard of the car by the motorman without his getting off the car, and, further, to so construct the arts that the fender may be attached to either end of the car.
I will describe a car-fender embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended cliams.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a car-fender embodying my invention, showing the same asdown. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view showing the fender as folded. Fig. 4 is a side view thereof, and Fig. 5 is a detailillustrating the means for securing the fender-frame to a car.
The fender comprises a main frame 1, designed to be detachably secured to the front of the car-dashboard; As here shown, the side rails of the frame 1 have reduced lower ends 2 for engaging in openings in hangers 3, depending from the sill of the car. As clearly shown in the drawings, the hangers each have two openings or socket members on different vertical planes, so that the frame may be raised or lowered to accommodate the fender to the height of the car from the rails. On the upper cross bar 4 of the main frame is a lug 5, having a threaded extension 6, on which is a thumb-nut 7. This extension when the frame is in position is designed to be engaged by a hook 8, pivoted on the rail 9 of the dashboard. When the said hook is engaging with the threaded extension, it is clamped by means of the thumb-nut 7.
The fender-frame consists of an upper section 10 and a lower section 11, these sections being pivotally connected together, so that the lower section may fold upon the upper section, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, and connected to these frame-sections is the netting 12. A bar 13 at the upper end of the fenderframe has bearings in the side bars of the main frame 1, and mounted to swing on the lower cross-bar 14 of the main frame is a supporting-arm 15, having a slot 16 for receiving a pin 17, extended from a side bar of the lower frame member 11. Connected to the opposite side bar of said lower frame member is a toggle-link, consisting of a lower section 18 and an upper section 19, the said upper section being pivoted at about its center to the side rail of the frame member 10, and at its upper end the said toggle-link member 19 has pivotal connection with an arm 20, pivoted to the side rail of the main frame 1.
Attached to the frame 20 is a segmentplate 21, which is arranged to slide in a guide 22 on the side bar or rail of the main frame .1, as clearly indicated in the drawings. This segment-plate 21 is provided with two handles 22 23, one arranged below the other, so that one or the other will be in a convenient position, depending upon the arrangement of the main frame in the hangers 3.
When the fender is in its lower position, it is supported at one side by the link-and-arm conhook 27, mounted on the bar 4, and engages with a lug 28 on the upper member 19 of the toggle-link.
A car-fender made in accordance with my invention may be of very light construction,
and therefore readily carried from one end of the car to the other, and through the medium of the toggle-links and connections with the segment-plate it may be readily raised or lowered by a Inotorinan without his getting off the car. 1
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A car-fender comprising a main frame, a fender-frame consisting of two hinged sections having swinging connection with the main frame, an arm mounted to swing on the main frame, toggle-link connections between said arm and the lower members of the fenderframe, a segment-plate having pivotal connectionwith said arm, and a guide on the main frame through which said segmentplate may move.
2. In a car-fender, a main frame, hangers on the car in which the lower ends of the side rails of the main frame removably engage, a hook on the dashboard of the car, a threaded extension on the top rail of the main' frame with which said hook is designed to engage, a clamping-nut on said extension, and a fender attached to the main frame.
3. A car-fender comprising a main frame, a fender-frame consisting of upper and lower pivotally-connected sections, the upper member being pivotally connected to the side bars of the main frame, a slotted guide-arm pivoted to one of said side bars of the main frame, a pin extended from the lower section of the fender-frame into the slot of said arm, an arm mounted to swing on the main frame, a toggle-link connection between said arm and the lower member of the fender-frame, a segment-plate pivoted to said arm, and a guide on the main frame in which said segment-plate may slide.
4. In a car-fender, a main frame, hangers secured to a car-sill and each having socket members arranged at different vertical planes for receiving the lower ends of the main frame, means for detachably connecting the upper portion of the main frame with the rail of the car-dashboard, and a fender mounted on the main frame.
5. A car-fender comprising a main frame, a foldable fender mounted on the main frame, an arm having swinging connection with the main frame, a toggle-link connection between said arm and the fender-frame, a lug on the upper member of said toggle-link, and a hook on the main frame for engaging With said lug.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELI OAMPANARI.
