STAKE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed November 7, 1904. Serial No, 231,688.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CUT ER LEWIS and AR- THUR J. BOSTWIOK, of Eau Claire, Eau Claire county, Wisconsin, have invented certain new stake-holder particularly adapted for use on railroad flat-cars which will prevent a stake from being accidentally lost off the cars in transit, but will allow the ready and convenient discharge of the stake and load whenever desired without danger to the life or limb of the operator.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a holder with our invention ap plied thereto, the device being in its locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in their unlocked positions. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the position of the holder on the car-timber and the stake-retaining device in its locked position. Fig. 4 is a View looking toward the open side of the holder.
Fig. 5-is an enlarged detailed view showing theposition of the parts when the locking device is being released. Fig. 6 is a similar view with the parts in their locked position, showing. in detail the latch device for locking the retaining-lever. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 6. on the line 00 a: of Fig. 6. v
In the drawings, 2 represents a timber or beam of the car provided on one side with a box or holder 3, having an open side 4:, through which the stake 5 is discharged. This stake.
is not attached to the car and is free to drop away from the same as soon as itis' released from the holder. A strap 6 connects the side of the box or holder with the timber 2. This strap is provided on its under side with a recess 7, concealed by a plate 8, through the lower end of which a pivot 9 passes and. on which a lever 10 is centrally mounted, being spaced from the lower edge of said strap. A link 11 is pivoted at 12 on the wall of the holder and extending across the open side thereof is provided with a hook 13, adapted to enter the recess 7 and be held therein by the engagement of the upper edge of the lever 10 with said hook. A latch 14, pivoted on the holder near one end of the lever 10, has a Fig. 8' is a similar viewlug 15 adapted to slip over the end of said lever and hold it in a substantially horizontal position. When in such position the'hook 13 will be held in the recess 7 and prevented from dropping out by the lever 10, and said lever in turn will be locked by its engagement with the lug on the latch 14:. To prevent this latch from releasing the lever, we provide a link 16, arranged to drop over the upper end of a clip 17, secured on the wall of the box.
In practice thestake having been placed in the holder and the link 11 swung across the open side the hook 13 will be fitted into the recess 7 and locked therein by tilting the lever 10 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 6. Accidental tilting of the lever to release said hook will be prevented by swinging the latch 1 1 to a vertical position. When the car isin transit, the link 16 will he slipped over the end of the clip 17, so that there will be no possibility of the latch becoming disengaged from the lever to release the hook through the shaking and jarring incidental to the motion of the car. When it is desired to unload a car, the operator will disengage the link from the clip and then going around to the opposite side of the car will reach across with a suitable tool and move the latch out of engagement with the lever, allowing it to swing to the position shown in Fig. 5 to permit the hook to drop by gravity out of the recess 7 and release the stake.
The device is simple and positive in its-action, inexpensive to manufacture, easily applied toany car or sleigh, and will absolutely prevent a stake from becoming accidentally detached from the holder while the car is in use.
We claim as our invention 1. A stake-holder having an opening in one side of suflicient size to allow the discharge of a stake therethrough, locking means for said stake, a retaining device for said locking means, a latch engaging said retaining device, and means for locking said retaining device against accidental movement.
2. A stake-holder having an opening in its side wall of sufiicient size to allow the dischargeof a stake laterally therethrough, and having a recess on one side, a link extending across the open side of saidholder and having a hook to enter said recess, a retaining-lever engaging said hook and a latch engaging said lever, and means preventing the accidental movement of said latch, substantially as described.
IIO
3. A stake-holder having an opening in one side of suflicient size to allow the discharge of a stake therethrough, locking means extending across the openside of said stake, a retaining device engaging said locking means, a locking-latch engaging said retaining device, and means for locking said retaining device against accidental movement, substantially as described.
4:. A stake-holder having an opening in its outer side wall to permit the discharge of a stake therethrough, a locking device extending across the open side of said holder, means engaging said locking device to temporarily lock the same, a device for holding said engaging meansin its locked position, and means preventing the accidental movement of said holding device, for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, with a stake-holder having an open side and provided with a recess, of a link extending across the open side of said holder and having a hook to enter said recess, a centrally-pivoted retaining-lever engaging said hook, a latch having a lug to slip over one end of said lever and hold it in its locked position, and means preventing the accidental movement of said latch, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with a timber provided on one side with a stake-holder having an open wall, of a link extending across said open side and provided with a hook adapted to enter a recess on the Wall of said holder, a pivoted retaining-lever engaging said hook, a latch having 2. lug to engage the free end of said retaining-lever, and a link carried by said latch to engage a clip provided on said holder, for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 29th day of October, 1904.
