My invention relates to wheeled toys, and more particularly to that class of toys which are self-driven, as by an inertia-wheel.
The object of my invention is to improve the driving connection between the inertiawheel and the running-wheels, whereby the power will be more efliciently transmitted between these parts; and it consists in certain novel features, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing the runningwheels and my improved mechanism for operating the same. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 00 m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the frame for supporting the friction-wheel. Fig. 4: is a detail view of the link for operating the bracket su pporting the inertia-wheel.
In the drawings only so much of the completed wheeled toy is shown as to enable one skilled in the art to understand my invention.
In my preferred form, 1 represents the frame.
Said frame is provided with lugs 2 2, in which is supported the shaft 3, carrying, rigidly secured thereto, the running-wheels 4: A. Also rigidly secured to the shaft and intermediate the ends thereof is a gear 5, which meshes with a gear 6, secured to a shaft 7, which is in turn supported in a frame 8. Said frame 8 is substantially U-shaped, having the por tion near the closed end slightly deflected from the plane of the arms. Each arm is provided with a perforation 9 to receive the shaft 7. One of said arms is provided with an enlarged disk-shaped end carrying two pins 11 and 12. Each arm is perforated at 15 and receives the shaft 3, about which the frame is free to swing. Pivotally secured to the frame 1 at 16 is a bracket 17, which supports the shaft 18, carries the inertia-wheel 19 and. the drum 20, both of which are fast to the shaft and turn therewith. The bracket is so disposed relatively to the friction-wheel 21, carried by the shaft 7, that the drum normally rests in contact with the friction-wheel. The slot 24 engages over the pin 12 and the slot 25 engages over the pin 11.
From the above description the operation of my device will be readily understood. By turning the ground-wheels 4, either by placing the vehicle on a surface and rapidly moving the same or by turning the wheels by hand or by any suitable means, the movement thereof is communicated to the gear 5 and through the gear 6 to the friction-wheel 21 and in turn through the drum 20 to the inertia-wheel. Power is thus stored in the inertiawheel which will serve as a driver and propel the vehicle. It will be noted that the frame 8 is pivoted to the shaft 3 and that when power is being transmitted from the running-wheels to the inertia-wheel the tendency of the frame is to move downward, the gear 6 following the gear 5. This movement of the frame will cause the pin 11 to contact with the end of the slot 25 in the link 22 and through the link draw the drum toward the friction-wheel, thereby increasing the frictional contact. On the other hand, when the inertial-wheel is the driver the gear 6 Will tend to climb on the gear 5, and thus bring the pin 12 in contact with the end of slot 24, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus again increase the frictional contact between the drum and friction-wheel.
The advantages of this construction will be When the vehicle is self-driven and strikes an obstruction or a grade where greater power is required, the friction contact between the driver and friction-wheel will be correspondingly increased, thus avoiding all slip. Furthermore, in starting the inertiawheel into motion no pressure is required on the vehicle, as in former inertia toys, and 'all movements of the running-wheels is trans- While I have described the above-preferred embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that modifications may be made without departing from the principle of my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth and shown in the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wheeled toy, comprising in combination running-wheels, an inertia wheel, movable means for supporting said inertia-wheel, 1
and means for transmitting power between said inertia-wheel and said running-wheels, including a friction-wheel, means for supporting said friction-wheel whereby the same may move bodily about the axis of the runningwheels, devices for operatively connecting said friction-wheel to the running-wheels, said devices rotatably connecting said wheels and moving said friction-wheel bodily and means operated by the bodily movement of the friction-wheel to move said inertia-wheel and thereby increase the transmitting friction of the friction-wheel.
2. A wheeled toy, comprising in combination running-wheels, an inertia-wheel, a pivoted bracket for supporting said inertia-wheel, and means for transmitting power between said inertia-wheel and said running-wheels, including a friction-wheel, means for supporting said friction-wheel whereby the same may move bodily about the axis of the runningwheels, devices for operatively connecting said friction-wheel to the running-wheels, said devices rotatably connecting said wheels and moving said friction-wheel bodily and means operated by the bodily movement of the friction-wheel to move said inertia-wheel and thereby increase the transmitting friction of the friction-wheeL 3. A wheeled toy, comprising in combination running-wheels, an inertia-wheel, a pivoted bracket for supporting said inertia-wheel, and means for transmitting power between said inertia-wheel, and said running-wheels, including a friction-wheel, a pivoted frame for said friction-wheel, devices for operatively connecting said friction-wheel to the runningwheels, and means operated by movement of said pivoted frame to move said inertia-wheel and thereby increase the transmitting friction of the friction-wheel.

A wheeled toy comprising in combination running-wheels, a shaft supporting the same, a frame pivoted on said shaft, a friction-wheel supported in said frame, a pivoted bracket, an inertia-wheel and a drum supported by said bracket, and means for moving the drum toward the friction-wheel, said means including a link connecting the bracket and pivoted frame.
6. A wheeled toy comprising in combination running-wheels, a shaft supporting the same, a frame pivoted on said shaft, a friction-wheel supported in said frame, a pivoted bracket, an inertia-wheel and a drum supported by said bracket, and means for moving the drum toward the friction-wheel, said means including a link having forked ends, slots in said forked ends and pins on the pivotframe engaging said slots.
