have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe-accompanying drawing, making part of this specification. v p
My invention relates tomdde of constructing the brake-blocks, and to the arrangement o f'the device for operating the brakes of spring-wagons, in a manner to prevent thestrain upon the springs when the brakes are.-

The following description will enable skilledartisans'to make and use my invention.
The brakeblocks Eare composed of the India-rubber blocks S, and the clamp formed by'- the two bent metal plates R, the edges of which overlap each other on the back' of the block S, 'as shown in fig. 3. This arrangement of the clamping-plates R is made. necessary in order that they may be tightened on the blocks S. The blocks S have a flange'projecting from the sides of their faces, to shield the edges of the clamp-pieces B. from coming in contact with the wheels. These brake-blocks are attached to the ends of the bent rods. F, and are secured thereto by a nut on the end of the rod, on whichva screw is cut, in order to tighten the plates R on the block S, to hold 'it firmly. This mode of constructing the brake-blocks enables me to replace the'hlocks S with great facility, when required. I The rods F are bent to the-proper form tobring'the blocks E in the proper relation tothe wheels, and are bun-g in'suitable hearings to the under side of the wagon-body, as-shown. A rod, P, whichmay be a single red, bent as shown, or it may be two rodsliniked together in the middle, has its endsattached to the arms of rods F near the brake-blocks. 'A strap of leather, N, is attached to the middle of rod 1?, and passes back arounda sheave or roller, 0, that is hung to revolve in a'bracket attached to the rear axle. The other endof strap N is attached to a rod,,M, that has ascrew out on the other end.- The screw-end oi' rod M passes through abar 9r nut on the ends of the double rod L, and the latter is connected by a strap of leather, K, to the lever J, just below the bed-bottom. The lever J has its fulcrum-at the lower end inbraekets attached to the under side of the bed-bottomfas shown, and the upper end passes up through a'slot in the bottom of the bed, in convenient position to be actuated by the foot of the driver. a p v p A notched strap of iron attached to the bottom of the bed srves to hold the lever in any desired position.'
A short lever, G, is attachedto the end of each of the rods F, where they meetunder'the middle of the bed, and are both connected, by a spiral spring, H, to the'bottom of the bed, as shown, fo r the purpose of keeping the brakes ofl'the wheels when not in use. i
The object of having the brake-blocks E attached to separate rods F is to provide for equal pressure of the blocks upon the wheels, regardless of the position of the vehicle, as, when the vehicle is descending an uneven read, such as would twist it much, if therods F were in one piece, the blocks could not be brought-with equal pressure on the wheels. v v
The brakes are actuated by pressing the lever J forward with the foot, which draws the blocks E back against the wheels. The tendency of the strain upon the straps K N androds L M is to draw the. bed A of the.
wagon backward, but this is counteracted by the action of the wheels upon the brake-blocks, which is to thrust the bed forward. 4 b
v The arrangement cf'the dcuble rod L, carrying the nut to'receive the screw of 'rod M, enables me to shorten the rod in case the straps K and N stretch, by which they maybe kept taut, and in proper condition to bring the brahc-blbcks with sufiicient force against the wheels.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The blocks E, rods F and P, straps K and N, sheave O, rods L-M, spring H, and lever J, all constructed and arranged suhstantiallyns and for the purpose set forth.
