MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent. i
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
Application filed March 29, 1905. Serial No. 252,653.
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we,RAPHAEL O. GALLINANT, a resident of Ridgefield Park, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, and Jothe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for turning the leaves of bound music, the object being to provide a leaf-turner of simple and inexpensive construction and which may be conveniently operated by a musician without removing his hands from the instrument on which he may be playing.
We will describe a music-leaf turner embodying our invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a music-leaf turner embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the upper portion thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing a modification.
The standard of the device comprises tubular telescoping members 10 11, the member 11 being held as adjusted by means of a setscrewfl2, and attached to the lower section 10 are the swinging legs 13. Extended upward from the upper standard member 11 and adapted for engagement with bound music are spring yielding arms 14 15, the upper ends of which are curved inward, as indicated at 16, to form clamping-bars, while at the lower portion the music is engaged by springfingers 16, attached to said members 14 and 15.
Mounted to swing on the stem portion 17 of the standard are arms 18, which arms have a spring-clip 19 at their ends for engaging with a music-sheet. Also mounted to swing on the stem portion 17, forward of the arms 18, is a shifting device for the arms 18, comprising a member 20, having a spring yielding finger 21 for engaging with the flange portion 22 of the arms 18. It will be noted that the flange portions 22 are inclined downward and outward, so that the finger 21 will engage with said flange portions during a partial rotary movement around the stem 17, and then the finger 21, moving on an arc of a smaller circle, will pass outward from the end of the flanges. The object in making the flange 22 inclined is because the necessary inaccuracies of working might cause the finger 21'to be farther from the arm 18 at some position of its revolution than at-the start. If the apparatus is so adjusted that the finger 21 is sure to engage the flange 22 at the beginning of the motion, then the inclination of the flange 22 will insure the engagement between the finger 21 and the flange 22 until the finger 21 passes outside the flange 22.
Attached to the member is a bevel-pinion 23, meshing with a bevelgear 24, the said bevel-gear 24 being mounted on a stud 25, attached to the stem 17, and arranged within the gear 24 is a spring 26, one end of which is attached to the gear-wheel, the other end being attached to the stud 25.
Extended outward from the gear 24 is an arm 27, attached to which is a chain 28, the said chain passing through a lateral opening 29 in the upper member 11 of the standardand thence downward through the two members of the standard, connecting with a foot plate 30. As clearly shown in Fig. 4 the chain 28 passes over a pulley 31, placed adjacent to the opening 29.
In the operation a downward pressure on the foot-plate 30 will rotate the gear-wheel 24, and consequently impart a rotary movement to the member 20, so that the arm 18 engaged thereby will swing the sheet of the music to which it is connected. As before stated, the
spring-pressed member 21 will pass outward from the end of the flange 22, and then upon releasing the pressure on the plate 30 the spring 26 will return the member 20 to the right, so that the finger 21 will pass under the flange 22 of the arm engaging with the next sheet of music.
In Fig. 6 we have shown a device for holding or engaging with a single sheet of music. This device consists of a horizontal arm 32,- having a clip 33 at its end for engaging with the music-sheet, and a vertical arm 34, having a clip 35 for engaging with the inner edge of the music-sheet. Said arm is also provided with a flange portion 22.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent 1. A music-leaf turner comprising an arm mounted to swing, a flange on said arm, the said flange being downwardly and outwardly inclined a gear-actuated swinging member, and a spring-pressed member on said member for engaging with said flange.
2. A music-leaf turner comprising a standard, an arm mounted to swing on said standard, an inclined flange on said arm, a gearactuated swinging member on the standard, and a spring-pressed member on said member for engaging with said flange.
3. A music-leaf turner comprising a tubular standard a plurality of arms having swinging connection with the standard-flanges on said arms, the said flanges being inclined downward and outward a spring-pressed linger on said member for engaging with the flanges of said arms, a pinion on said member, a gearwheel mounted on the standard and meshing with said pinion on the standard, afoot-actuated mechanism for moving said gear-wheel in one direction, and comprisinga chain passing through the tubular standard, and a spring for moving the gear-wheel in the opposite direction.
4. A music-leaf turner comprising a standard, arms extended upward from said standard, spring-clips arranged in said arms, the upper ends of said arms being curved inward sheetengaging arms having rotary connection with the standard, and means for causing the rotary movements.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
