Be it known that I,FR1EDR10H SCHREINER,
, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plaineld, in the county -of Union and VState of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Casting-Box for Stereotypes,
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. l v This invention relates to casting stereotype-plates, and constitutes an improvement upon the device patented to me October 25, 1904, the number of the said patent being 773,528. In the said patent I described a mold comprising amovable sectiongage which enables plates `of irregular dimensions to be cast in the same box.
The object of this invention is to vprovide a lifting device for the cover of such a castingbox.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of'parts to be more fully described hereinafter'and definitely set forth cation, in which similar characters of referin the claims. 'Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifience indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation re resenting the lower portion of the .frame of t e machine as broken away and showing the cover of the box raised. Fig. 2 is a substantially longitudinal section through the casting-box, the cover and a portion of the bottom plate being represented in elevation. In this view the stereotype plate is represented lying within .the box after being formed therein, and the cope or cover of the box is represented in dotted outline in a raised positlon. Fig. 3 is an end elevation .of the castlng-box, taken at the inlet and representing contiguous parts' as broken away.
Referringmore particularly to the parts, 1 represents the bottom plate of a casting-b ox, which is provided at its upper edge with the usual ears 2, having sockets at which a pivotal connection is made with a cover or cope 3. This cover is of the construction described in the patent to me referred to above.
Its lower face is composed of a plurality of tapering bosses 4, arranged in rows 1n such manner as to present longitudinal grooves 5 and transverse grooves 6. Near the lower grooves 13 for a to be laid flat upon the plate 1, so as to constitute-.a gage to determine the width and thickness of the body of the stereotype. Upon this matrix-gage` I lay a section-gage 12, which is preferably of substantially triangular form 1n cross-section, the side face of the same being provided with'longitudinal purpose which will appear hereinafter.
Near the lower edge ofthe cover 3 I provide projecting brackets 14, between which there is ivotally su ported an eccentricallymounted) ing provided with a suitable handle 16, enabling it to be rotated upon its pivots 17. Thisroller 15 completely'bridges the space between the brackets '14.
In using this casting-box the stereotypematrix is laid face up upon the bottom plate would then beset into osition so as to give the plate the desired wi th, and upon the upper side of this gage 11 the section-gage'lZ is applied, as indicated in Fig. 3, the same being disposed in such a position that when the cover closes down it will occupy one of the aforesaid longitudinal channels or grooves 5. The cover of the box having been closed, the parts will be clamped in position and the metal would be allowed to flow in from the gate end adjacent to the lifting-bar 15. When the cover is being applied during the casting operation, the hand e- 16 should be folded back against the upper side of the cover, as indicated4 in the dotted outline in Fig.2, so thatthe lifting-bar or roller 15 does not prevent the cover from seating closely 'into `reason of the eccentricity of the lifting-bar roller or li lng-bar 15, the same be- IOO M'I o 5 IIO the side gages and the section-gage are subjected to pressure and the cover is forced upwardly from the cast plates 18 and 19, (indicated, respectively, at the right and left of the section-gage 1'2.)
The flanges 10 aord means for preventing the newly-formed plate from adhering to the cover and rising therewith, and the grooves 13 have a similar function, it being understood that when the metal flows the sectiongage' constitutes a dam to form the side wall of the plate. In this connection it should be understood that the cross-section of the section-gage is considerably less than that of the groove or channel in which it is placed.
.In'order to diminish the wear upon the upper surface of the section-gage, this part is referably flattened slightly, as indicated in 1g. 3. v
Special attention is called to the fact that whatever be the width of the plate cast in the mold the lifting-bar will alford means for freeing the cover with facility, as the lifting-bar will always engage with the section gage placed at any point.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A casting-box for stereotype-plates, comprising a bottom plate, a side gage, an intermediate section-gage adapted to regulate the width of plates cast, a cover adapted to overlie said bottom plate, and an eccentric lifting-bar carried by said cover and resting on said gages.
2. A casting-box for stereotype-plates, comprising a bottom plate, a cover coper* ating therewith, side gages, an intermediate section-gage disposed therebetween and adapted to regulate the width of plates cast, and an eccentric lifting-bar mounted in said cover resting upon the said side gages and said section-gage,
3. A casting-box for stereotype-plates, comprising a bottom plate, a cover coperating therewith, side gages, a section-gage disposed between said side gages and constituting a dam to limit the side iiow of' the molten metal, said section-gage having an irregularity adapted to interlock the cast plate therewith, and a transverse lifting-bar resting upon said section-gage.
