Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
Application filed March 22, 1905. Serial No. 251,361.
T 0 00M whom it may concern- Be it known that I, AARON E. KEPNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lemon, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Pump-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a pump-operating mechanism which is light and strong and especially adapted for operating pumps in which the plunger of the pump is worked by a hollow rod, the rod eX- tending up above the pump-head for delivering the water at the desired height, the apparatus being especially adapted for operating a pump such as is shown 1n a former application of mine, filed November 5, 1903, Serial No. 179,886, although the apparatus may be used for other pumps.
Another object is to provide a pump-head which is very simple in construction, strong, and durable.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, and, referring thereto Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a well, showing the pump in crosssection with the pump-operating apparatus in section on line at as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective in detail of the pump-head. Fig. 4 is a section on line 00 a, Fig. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the split bushing.
1 designates the well, in which is a pump 2 with plunger 3, to which is connected a hollow rod 4. A platform 5 is provided at the top of the well, through which the pipe or hollow rod 4 extends, and has an offset section 6 connected with the concentric sections by elbow-sections 7. The upper section of the pipe is guided by a cross beam 8, which unites the upper ends of a pair of A-standards 9, the upper end of the pipe or hollow rod 4 discharging water through the pipe 10, which is connected by a T to the pipe 4.
The cross-beams 11 of the A-standards 9 are connected by braces 12. Mounted on the cross-bars 11 are journal-boxes 13, in which is mounted a crank-shaft 14, carrying a fly-wheel 15, having a crank 16, which opcrates a pump-head 17.
The main frame of the pump-head c0mprises a U-shaped yoke 18, the upper ends of which are united by cross bars 19 with flanges 20, the lower cross-bar 19 being connected with the bowed part of the U-shaped yoke 18 by a pair of vertical bars 21, one of which is arranged on each side of the yoke and riveted or otherwise fastened thereto, the lower ends of the bars 21 being spread apart to form a crutch 22. A split bushing 23, which is carried by the crank 16, slides between the flanges 20 and reciprocates the pump-head as the crank rotates.
the crank 16, which operates the split bushing 23, and as the yoke reciprocates it operates the connecting-rod 24 up and down, which carries with it the pipe 4, thus operating the plunger 3 and elevating the water up through the pipe 4, from which it is discharged through the pipe 10.
What I claim is- 1 1'. In a pump ap aratus a pi e tirou h which the water is Elevated, a s tandardf a crank-shaft supported thereby, a reciprocating pump-head comprising a yoke, cross-bars uniting the upper ends of the yoke, a split bushing between the cross-bars and mounted upon the crank, a pair of bars extending from the lower cross-bar to the lower part of the yoke and spread apart at the lower bar to form a crutch, a bracket fastened to the pipe, and a connecting-rod bolted to the crutch and bracket.
2. In a pump apparatus a pipe through which the water is elevated, a standard, a crank-shaft supported thereby, a reciprocating pump head comprising a yoke, cross bars uniting the upper ends of the yoke, a split bushing between the cross bars and mounted upon the crank, a connection from the yoke to the pipe, a pair of rollers mounted on the standard and bearing against opposite ends of the yoke for guiding in a straight path.
3. In a pump apparatus a pipe through which the water is elevated, a standard, a crank-shaft supported thereby, a reciprocating pump head comprising a yoke, crossbars uniting the upper ends of the yoke, a split bushing between the cross-bars and mounted upon the crank, a pair of bars extending from the lower cross-bar to the lower part of the yoke and spread apart at the lower bar to form a crutch, a bracket fastened to the pipe, and a connecting-rod bolted to the crutch and bracket, the upper end of said pipe being slidably mounted in the upper end of said standard.
4. in a pump apparatus a pipe through which the water is elevated, a standard, a crank-shaft supported thereby, a reciprocating pump-head comprising a yoke, cross-bars uniting the upper ends of the yoke, a split bushing between the cross-bars and mounted upon the crank, a pair of bars extending from the lower cross-bar to the lower part of the yoke and spread apart at the lower bar to form a crutch, a bracket fastened to the pipe, and a connecting rod bolted to the crutch and bracket, the upper end of said pipe being slidably mounted in. the upper end of said standard, said pipe having an oil"- set portion adjacent the pumphead.
5. A pump-head comprising a yoke, crossbars uniting the ends of the yoke and forming parallel bearing faces for receiving a crank, and a brace extending from a cross bar to the bowed part of the yoke.
6. A pump-head comprising a U-shaped yoke, cross-bars L-shaped in cross-section uniting the ends ofthe yoke and forming parallel bearing-faces for receivinga crank, and a pair of braces extending from the lower crossbar to the bowed part of the yoke.
7. A pump-head comprising a yoke, crossbars uniting the ends of the yoke and forming parallel bearing faces for receiving a crank, a brace extending from a crossbar to the bowed part of the yoke, and means on the lower end of the brace for attaching a pump-operating rod.
8. A pump-head comprising a U-shaped yoke, crossbars lL-shaped in cross-section uniting the ends of the yoke and forming parallel bearing-faces for receiving a crank, a pair of braces extending from the lower cross-bar to the bowed part of the yoke, and means on the lower ends of the braces for attaching a pump-operating rod.
9. A pump-head comprising a yoke, cross bars uniting the ends of the yoke and forming parallel bearing faces for receiving a crank, a split sleeve between the cross-bars and around the crank, and a brace extending from a cross-bar to the bowed part of the yoke. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at California, this 14th day of March, 60
AARON E. KEPNER.
