To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CRAWFORD D. LOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coalh'ill, in the county of Johnson and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Buggy-Bow Rest, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in buggy-bow rests.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of buggy-bow rests and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient one adapted to be readily applied to a buggy and capable of cushioning a buggy-top and of preventing the bows thereof from bending and breaking.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cushioning device of this character which will be capable ofadjustment longitudinally of the rail-bolt in order that it may be positioned properly to receive the bows of a buggy-top should the same become loose or otherwise get out of their original position.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a buggy-bow rest constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a buggy. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the rest. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a bracket or base consisting of a bar or top portion 2 and having a depending web or flange 3, preferably of an ornamental form, as shown, and terminating short of the ends of the top portion or bar and provided with a rectangular opening 4 for the reception of the rail-bolt 5 of the body of a buggy, whereby the buggy-bow rest is mounted thereon. The depending flange and the top bar or rest may consist of acasting or be constructed .in any other desired manner, and the projecting terminals of the said top bar or portion are provided with guide-openings 6 for the reception of depending arms 7 of a boltsupport 8. The arms 7 preferably consist of rods or pins provided at their lower edges with heads 9 for engaging the lower faces of the terminals of the top bar or portion 2 and having coiled springs 10 disposed on them for cushioning the buggy-bow support. The arms 7 are adapted to slide in the openings of the base or bracket 1, and the springs cushion the top of the buggy and prevent the bows from bending and breaking.
The bow-receiving support 8 is composed of a pair of spaced transversely-curved seats 11, presenting upper concave faces and connected by an intermediate longitudinal bar or portion 12, formed integral with the seats and provided with a depending flange 13. The seats which support the rear bow 14 of the buggy-top 15 a considerable distance in advance and in rear of the rail-bolt are adapted to prevent the bow from bending and breaking, and the coiled springs form efli ective cushions for the same.
The seats 11 are preferably provided with linings 16 of felt or other suitable material, and the rear bow is retained in the seats by means of a strap 17, extending through a slot 18 of the dependingflange or portion of the intermediate connecting-bar 12. The strap is provided with a buckle, and it serves to prevent the bow 14: from leaving the seats. The depending flange 3 of the base or bracket is adjustable longitudinally of the rail-bolt, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, in order to position the device properly with relation to the bow 14 should the latter after long use become loose or otherwise get out of its original position.
It will be seen that the buggy-bow rest is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily applied to any ordinary buggy or similar vehiole, and that it will add materially to the life of both the top and bed of a buggy.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device of the class described, comprising a base having an opening to receive a rail-bolt and provided in advance and in rear of the same with guide-openings, a bow-receiving I0 the base for cushioning the said support, and
