DEVICE FOR SHARPENING EDGE-TOOLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed June 16, 1905. Serial No. 265,586.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known thatI, J ONES DUB. Yow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avalon, in the county of Franklin, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Sharpening Edge-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for sharpening edge-tools.
One object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient device of the character named.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device for sharpening edgetools embodying such characteristics that the tool may be readily supported and guided over a stone.
WVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanyingdrawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the base. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section through the toolclamp.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates an oblong base having oppositelydisposed uprights 2 and 3 secured at one end thereof and upon corresponding sides in any suitable manner, there being guide- rails 4 and 5 secured upon opposite sides of the said base with their upper faces above the upper face of the base, the upper face of the latter between the guide- rails 4 and 5 having a recess 6 for the reception of a Whetstone 7, whose upper face lies flush with the upper face of the base. Mounted for sliding movement upon the said guide- rail 4 and 5 is a frame consisting of cross-pieces 8 and 9, having sills 10 and 11 connected to their under faces at their respective ends, the cross-pieces being arranged transversely of the base for engagement of the top of the guide-rails, the said sills depending from the said cross-pieces upon corresponding sides of the base.
Secured in any suitable manner to the opposite ends of the cross-piece 8 are uprights 12 and 13, connected to the upper end of each of which latter is a spring 14 and 15, the opposite ends of each spring 14 and 15 being connected to the respective eyebolts 16 of the clamping members 17 and 18, it being seen that the said springs are connected near the outer end of said clamping members. Achisel or other tool 19 has its blade portion fitted in grooves 20 and 21 of the respective clamping members with its edge extremity protruding beyond the inner ends of the clamping members, the clamping members being held tightly upon the opposite faces of the blade of the tool by means of a suitable sleeve 22. It will be observed that the edge of the tool rests upon the Whetstone 7 and it is obvious that if the handle part of the tool should be grasped the springs 14 and 15 would yield to permit of any desired degree of pressure upon the tool in the movement of the aforesaid frame or carriage over the Whetstone.
Connected to the cross-piece 9 of the frame or carriage, and intermediate the ends thereof, is a forwardly-directed lug 23, having its extremity bifurcated to form spaced ears 24 for the reception of one end of a pitman 25, secured therein through the instrumentality of asuitable pin 26, the said pitman being directed upwardly from the carriage and connected at its opposite end to the crank-bend 27 of a shaft 28, journaled in the upper ends of the aforesaid uprights 2 and 3, there being a suitable crank-handle 29 for rotating the said shaft 28.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the crank-handle 29 is revolved the crank-bend 27 of the shaft 28 causes a reciprocation of the pitman 25, which latter being connected to the carriage causes the carriage to reciprocate backwardly and forwardly over the guide- rails 4 and 5 and carry with it the tool, whereby the latter, reciprocating backwardly and forwardly over the stone 7, will be sharpened to the-desired degree.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a base having uprights at one end, and a recess in its upper face near its opposite end, guide-rails upon the base upon opposite sides of said recess, a stone fitted in said recess, a carriage mounted upon said rails, means upon the carriage for the support of a tool, ashaft connected in the aforesaid uprights, and a connection between said shaft and said carriage for causing a reciprocation of the latter and the tool carried thereby.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a base having uprights at one end, and a recess in its upper face near its opposite end, guide-rails upon the base upon opposite sides of said recess, a stone fitted in said recess, a carriage mounted upon said rails, means upon the carriage for supporting a tool, said means being yieldable in the direction of the stone to permit the tool to be held at various angles to the stone, a shaft connected in the aforesaid uprights, and a connection between said shaft and said carriage for causing a recip- JONES DU B.
