T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. BRooKs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of East Orange, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ratchet Seal-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is additional to what are known as my ratchet seal-presses, patented May 6, 1884, by Letters Patent No. 298,284; September 22, 1885, No. 326,897; October 13, 1885, No. 328,106; October 14, 1890, No. 438,140; November 1, 1892, No. 485,370; October 20, 1896, No. 569,742, and December7, 1897, No. 595,282. Another form of the same is shown at Fig. 16 in Letters Patent No. 660,837, granted to me October 30, 1900, for improvement in seals. The general object of the invention, in common with said patented inventions, is to insure securely fastening each seal at the pressing operation and its provision in the press with sharp and distinct lettering or other distinguishing marks, if need be, and this is accomplished, as heretofore, by what has been termed a ratchet attachment, which prevents reopening the dies after the pressing operation is begun until they have been closed to a predetermined extent suflicient to fully press the seal-disk or its equivalent, or, in other words, to render the seal perfectly press-fastened.
A distinctive object of the presentimprovement is to apply the ratchet device to the movable die in the form of asaddle carried by the latter and adapted to interact with a springpressed pawl having a relatively fixed pivot and arranged within the head of the sealpress, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of my improved ratchet seal-press, showing the movable lever-handle in its two positions of rest by full and dotted lines, respectively. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the head of the press, with the dies closed. Figs. 3 and 4 are side and end views of the movable die, detached. Figs. 5 and 6 are side and end views of the die-opening spring, detached; and Figs. 7 and 8 are side and edge views of the ratchet device, detached.
Like reference letters and numbers indicate like parts in all the figures.
The improved ratchet-press conveniently and preferably comprises two lever-handle press.
castings 1 and 2 as its main parts, the two forming, respectively, at one end the leverhandles a and 6 of the press, and one of them, 1, provided simply with a suitable eccentric or cam c at its pivot end. The other main part, 2, has a recessed head (Z integral with its pivot end and accommodates within it the other parts of-the press. These parts are a bed-die 3 and a movable die 4, a die-opening spring 5, a ratchet device 6, a reversible pawl 7, Fig. 2, with its appurtenances, the latter consisting of a small spiral spring 8, Fig. 2, and a follower 9, Fig. 2, and a pair of pivots 10 and 11, by which the cam-carrying main part 1 and the pawl 7, respectively, are pivoted within said head (Z of the main part 2.
The bed-die 3 is preferably and conveniently constructed with the customary gage 0, projecting within the mouth 12 of the head (Z to facilitate locating the seal between the dies, and the opposing faces of the dies, one of which is shown in Fig. 4, are provided in customary manner with any desired distinguishingmarks, (represented by the number 479.)
The movable die 4 preferably slides end wise and has conveniently a cylindrical body and a flanged upper end.
The die-opening spring 5 is conveniently and preferably a spiral spring inclosed within a chamber concentric with said cylindrical body of the movable die 4 and reacting between a pair of flanges 13 and 14, Figs. 2 and 3, one of which is Within the head cl and the other upon the movable die 4 at its upper end, as aforesaid.
The flanged upper end of the movable die 4 instead of being acted on directly by the cam c, as heretofore, is separated therefrom by a disk portion f of the ratchet device 6, as in Fig. 2, and the ratchet-teeth 15 and reversingnotches 16 and 17 are formed in a leg g of said ratchet device, as shown in Figs. 2 and 7, said leg g being conveniently square in cross-section and located behind the dies with reference to the entrance to the mouth 12 of the A recess 18, Figs. 2 and 8, in the bottom of the disk portion f is fitted to and admits the flanged upper end of the movable die,
so as to keep the parts alined with each other.
When the press is fully closed, as in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the seal is perfectly press-fastened, the biting-point of the pawl 7 projects within the upper reversing-notch 16 of the ratchet device 6, and the ratchet device, and therewith the movable die 4, are free to move upward or be retracted by the spring 5when the lever-handles a and Z) are opened. In this movement the pawl 7 rides lightly over the ratchet-teeth 15 into the other reversing-notch 17, and the press is thus prepared to receive another seal which is introduced into the mouth 12 beneath the movable die 4: and against the gage of the beddie 3. In thepressing movement (represented by the arrow /2 in Fig. 1) the cam 0 acts on the disk 7" of the ratchet device (5 and therethrough upon the movable die 4:, said disk resting solidly upon the flat upper end of the die, so that any breaking strain of the ratchet device is precluded. Leaving the lower reversing-notch 17 in this movement, the pawl 7 immediately engages with the first of the ratchetteeth 15, and thereafter any reverse movement of the movable die 4: is prevented until the dies are fully closed and the seal is perfectly press-fastened. Pcrfectl y press-fastening the seal is thus insured with parts of the utmost simplicity and strength, which are subjected in use to the least possible strain and without interfering with the movements of the pivoted lever-handle itself.
The bed-die3 may be in some cases integral with the main casting 2 and may be adapted, together with the movable die 4:, to pressfasten seals of any description. Either or both of the springs may be of other shapes, if preferred, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this speciiication* 1. A seal-press having an endwise-Irovable die, a ratchet device having a portion overlying the upper end of said die and a leg provided with a longitudinal series of ratchetteeth, a spring-pressed pawl arranged to engage said teeth, means for moving said die and therewith said ratchet device in the pressing operation, means for permitting the retraction of the die at the end of the pressing movement, and means for effecting such retraction.
2. A seal-press having an endWise-movable die, a ratchet device having a portion overlying the upper end of said die and a leg provided with a longitudinal series of ratchetteeth and a pair of reversing-notches at the respective ends of said series, a spring-pressed pawl arranged to engage said teeth and notches, and means for reciprocating said die and therewith said ratchet device.
3. Aseal-press having an endwise-movable die constructed with a flanged upper end, a ratchet device having a disk overlying said upper end and a leg provided with a longitudinal series of ratchet-teeth and a pair of reversing-notches at the respective ends of said series, a spring-pressed pawl arranged to engage said teeth and notches, and a spiral spring, compressed beneath the flange of said die, serving to retract the die when its eflective movement is fully completed.
4. In a ratchet-press, the combination of a pair of main parts comprising respectively a die-closing cam and a recessed head, a movable die within said head having a flanged upper end, a ratchet device having a disk interposed between said upper end of the movable die and the die-closing cam, a spring-pressed pawl arranged to engage said ratchet device and cooperating therewith to prevent the retraction of said die until the pressing operation is fully completed, means for permitting the retraction of the die at the end of the pressing movement, and a spiral spring compressed beneath the flange of the die for effecting such retraction, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
