Be itknown that I, CLAUDE SIEBRING, a citizen of the United States, residing at George, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Swinging Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in swinging gates.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinging gates and to providea simple and comparatively inexpensive one of great strength and durability adapted to be readily opened and closed at a distance from either side of it to avoid dismounting from a horse or leaving a vehicle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gate of this character which when closed will be rmly locked in such position to prevent hogs and cattle from opening it.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a swinging gate constructed in accordance with this invention and shown closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the gate being open. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

1 designates a swinging gate consisting of a frame of tubular metal and vertical and horizontal wires; but any other form of gate may be employed, as will be readily understood. The gate is hinged to a post or support 2 by means of upper and lower hinges having elongated pintles 3, mounted on the post or support 2 and receiving slidable eyes 4, fixed to the gate and adapted to permit the latter to be raised and lowered, as hereinafter explained. The elongated pintles may consist of enlarged staples secured to the hinge post or support;
. but they may be constructed in any other desired manner.
The gate, which is lifted by the means hereinafter explained, is provided at its outer end with a latch projection 5, adapted to engage a fixed keeper 6 of a latch-post 7. The fixed keeper, which is provided at its upper face with a recess 8 to receive the projection 5 of the gate, has an inclined or beveled upper edge 9 extending from its outer end to the recess for permitting the projection 5 to slide readily over the keeper when the gate closes. Vhen the gate is closed and the projection 5 is in engagement with the keeper, it is securely locked, and as the hinged end of the gate is slidable on the hinge-post by means of the eyes and the elongated pintles it is necessary in order to open the gate to lift the same at a point adjacent to the inner or hinged end of the gate to prevent the members of the hinge from binding.
The gate is lifted vertically and oscillated horizontallyby means of an upwardly-extending oscillatory lever 10, consisting of a tubular bar or member fulcrumed at its lower end and provided at its upper end with an angularly-disposed arm 11. The lower end of the tubular bar or member is provided with an eye 12, which is linked into an eye 13 of a support 14, consisting of a short post or stake driven into the ground and having' its upper end arranged at the surface thereof The eyes may consist of eyebolts having shanks embedded in the support 14C and secured in the lower end of the tubular bar or member 10. The post or support 14 is located at a poin't in advance of the transverse plane of the hinges of the gate, and when the latter is open, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings,l the lower portion 15 of the tubular bar or member extends a considerable'distance in advance of the gate. The lower portion is curved or bent to arrange it at an angle to the body portion of the tubular bar or member and to enable it to extend beneath the gate when the latter is open. The arm 11, which is arranged at right angles to the main portion of the bar or member l0, is preferably constructed of flat metal and is suitably secured to the upper end of the tubular bar or member, preferably by means of a fastening device embedded in a wooden plug fitted in the upper end of the tubular bar or member. The arm 11 is supported by an inclined brace 16, extending from the central portion of the tubular bar or member to the outer portion of the arm 11.

The gate-actuating lever 1s arranged at an inclination when the gate is closed, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and when the lever is swung rearward the arm 11 vmoves up- The slidable connection between the end of the arm and the gate permits the lever to move the `gate vertically before swinging the same horizontally. This vertical movement of the gate 2o unlatches the same by carrying the projection upward out of engagement with the keeper.
The continued rearward movement of the lever swings the gate horizontally and carries the same to its open position. The lever by this movement is carried beyond a perpendicular position and its weight tends to maintain the gate in its open position, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The gate while open is in an elevated position, as clearly y shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and when the lever is swung outward by the means hereinafter described the weight of the gate and the lever will complete the closing movement of the former, whereby the gate is positively 3 5 opened and closed. The gate-actuating lever is connected with a pair of operating-levers 2O and 21 by means of a wire rope or cable 22 or other flexible connection secured at one end to the arm of the gate-actuating lever and 4o provided at its other end with two branches 23, which are secured to the inner ends of the operating-levers. The arm 11 of the gateactuating lever is provided with an eye 24 to receive the front or lower endv of the flexible connection 22. The eye 24 preferably consists of an eyebolt the shank of which'pierces the arm 11, being headed or otherwise secured at the inner or lower face of the arm 11. The operating-levers, which extend longitudinally of the roadway, are fulcrumed between their ends and are provided at their outer ends with suitable handles 25 for enabling them to be readily vgrasped by a person on horseback or in a vehicle. The lever 2O is fulcrumed on a x post or upright 26 and the other lever 21 is fulcrumed on an inclined bar. 27, secured at its lower end to and extending upwardly and outwardly from the hinge post or upright. The posts or uprights 2 and 26 are connected 6o by a horizontal bar 28, which also extends beyond the hinge post or upright to brace the inclined bar 27. A guide-pulley 29 is mounted on the horizontal bar 28 in a suitable bracket 30, and its lower edge extends below the plane of the horizontal bar to prevent the flexible connection from coming in Contact with the same in the closing operation of the gate.
When the gate is open, the lower portion of the flexible connection extends rearwardly from the guide-pulley at an inclination so that it-is adapted to exert a direct forward pull on the oscillatory gate-actuating lever sufficient to impart to the gate the necessary momentum to carry the gate to its closed position.
Having thus fully described myY invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a swinging gate, an upwardly extending oscillatory gateactuating lever fulcrumed at its lower end -in ad- Vance of the point of hinging of the gate and at one side of the same when the gate is in its closed position, said lever being provided at its lower end with an arin extending beneath and in advance of the gate when the latter is in its open position, means for connecting the lever with the gate, and operating mechanism connected with the lever for oscillating the sanne.
2. The combination of a swinging gate, an upwardly-extending oscillatory gate-actuating lever fulcrumed at its lower end in ad- Vance of the point of hinging of the gate and at one side of the same whenthe gate is in 'its closed position, said lever being provided at its lower end with an -arm extending beneath and in advance of the gate when the latter is in its open position, an arm arranged at the top of the lever and connected with the gate, and operating mechanism for oscillating the lever.
3. The combination of a vertically-movable horizontally-swinging gate, a lever fulcrumed at its lower end in advance of the hinges of the gate and located at one side of the latter when the gate is closed, said lever being provided at its lower end with an arm extending beneath and to a point in advance of the gate when the latter is in its open position, means for slidably connecting the upper portion of the lever with the gate, and operating mechanism for actuating the lever.

4. The combination of a vertically-movable horizontally-swinging gate, a lever fulcrumed at its lower end in advance of the hinges of the gate and located at one side of the latter when the gate is closed, said lever being provided at its lower end with an arm extending beneath and to a point in advance of the gate when the latter is in its open position, a guide mounted on the gate and extending longitudinally thereof, and an arm extending from the top of the lever and slidable on the guide.
5.- The combination of a vertically-movable horizontally-swinging gate provided with a horizontal guide, an upwardly-extending lever fulcrumed at the lower end and provided at the top with an arm slidable on the guide, operating mechanism connected with the lever,

'and a latch operated by the vertical movement of the gate for locking the latter in its closed position.
' 6. The combination of a vertically-movablel horizontally-swinging gate, an upwardly-extending lever fulcrumed at its lower end at a point in advance of the hinges of the gate and provided at the bottom with an arm extending beneath and in advance of the gate when the latter is open, a guide carried by the gate, an arm extending from the top of the lever and slidable on the guide, and operating mechanism for oscillating the said lever.
7. The combination of a vertically-movable horizontally-swinging gate, a latch operated by the vertical movement of the gate, a gateactuating lever fulcrumed at the bottom and extending upwardly to and slidably connected with the top of the gate, operating-levers, a
flexible connection extending from the gateactuating lever to the operating-levers, and means for guiding the flexible connection.
8. The combination with a vertically-movable horizontally-swinging gate provided with a guide extending longitudinally of the gate, an upwardly-extending lever fulcrumed at its lower end and slidably connected at the top with the guide, means for actuating the lever, and a latch operated by the vertical movement of the gate for locking the latter in its closed position.
