HENRY KELLER, OF LASALLE, NEW YORK.
DUMB-WA ITER CLUTCH MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed-October 22, 1904. Serial No. 229,637.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lasalle, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumb-Waiter Clutch Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to dumb-waiter clutch mechanism, and has for its object the combination of clutch mechanism with the hoistingrope of a dumb-waiter in such manner that the raising of the dumb-waiter carriage to its uppermost point of traverse operates automatically to bring the clutch mechanism into operation.
My invention is hereinafter fully set forth and described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view in elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention with parts thereof broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
In the drawings illustrating my invention, A is a dumb-waiter case extending up through two stories of abuilding, and B the floor of the second story thereof. In the lower part of this case A, below the floor B, I have shown a refrigerator-chamber A, provided on one side with a door C, and back of the upper portion of the refrigerator-chamberA, I make an icereceptacle D, adapted to receive and retain a supply of ice for cooling the refrigeratorchamber A; The wall between the upper part of the refrigerator-chamber A and the ice-receptacle D is provided with an opening D, through which communication is had between the ice-receptacle D and the refrigerator-chamber A. The ice-receptacle D is also provided with a suitable drip-cock d. p The shelving for the refrigerator-chamber A is made in the form of a dumb-waiter carriage E, adapted to rest in the refrigeratorchamber A and slide up and down in the dumb-waiter case A. This carriage E has shelves 6 therein, so as to support things placed thereon. To the upper part of the carriage E, I secure a hoisting-rope F, which passes up over a pulley G and is provided at its opposite end with a counterweight H, preferably operating in a vertical passage a in the side of the case A, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. For retaining the carriage above the floor B, I provide a spring-clutch I, provided with a tripping-lever J, which is adapted to be engaged by the bail e of the dumb-waiter carriage when raised, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and release the clutch I, so that it will clamp the rope F and retain the carriage E in an upraised position. In order to release the clutch I, I provide a lever K, which projects out from the front of the case A and is adapted to engage a collar 2' on the clutch I, whereby it can be moved back out of engagement with the rope F, when it is again engaged by the tripping-lever J and held thereby out of engagement with the rope F.
In the front of the case above the floor B, I provide a door G, through which access can be had to the inside of the case A at that point.
Having thus described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination in a dumb-waiter mechanism of a vertically-movable carriage, a rope suspending said carriage, a pulley over which said rope operates, a spring-actuated clutch adapted to engage said rope, and a latch adapted to be engaged by the carriage so as to bring said clutch into operation, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY KELLER.
