Description

No. 804,732. PATENTED NOV. 14, 1905. W. KENNEDY; APPARATUS FOR BENDING METAL TUBES, RODS, AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED OUT. 6,1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT ori ron.
APPARATUS FOR BENDING IVIETALTUBES, RODS, AND THE LHKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed October 6, 1904:. Serial No. 227,390.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KENNEDY, mechanic, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 4 Furzeham road, West Drayton, in the county of Sussex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Bending Metal Tubes, Rods, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus by means of which a metal tube, rod, or the like may be bent or set when cold to any required angle without producing undue expansion, flat tening,or bulging of any partof the tube or rod.
The apparatus and the method of using it will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are respectively an elevation and a plan, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details of the apparatus.
A hollow mandrel or tube A,which is screwthreaded internally, is provided at its ends with flanges C 0, one of which is adapted to be secured to a bench or other fixture. A second hollow mandrel or tube D, screwthreaded externally, is screwed into the upper portion of the mandrel A to a depth sufficient to support it effectively during the bending process and secured in that position by pins D. A nut E of special construction is fitted on the tube D and the pipe or rod to be bent is clamped between the nut and the flange C. The nut is ring-shaped, and its under surface corresponds in size and is parallel to the upper surface of the flange C. A number of blocks G (four are shown in the drawings) are fixed to the upper surface of the nut E or formed integrally therewith and are so disposed that by means of the key I the nut may be thereby screwed firmly home, so as to clamp the pipe F securely, or unscrewed to free the pipe, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
A cored plug or bush H is fitted into the upper end of the mandrel D, so that when the pipe F is clamped in position it maybe bent by inserting the pin 1 of the key I into the hole of the plug H and turning the key round until the grooved corner J of the key-head encounters the tube F. The latter is then bent by the leverage which can be applied by the key round the annular block L, which encircles the mandrel D either partially or wholly, the angle through which it is bent being indicated by the angular traverse of the corner J round the edge of the flange C,
which may be provided with a scale for that purpose. The flange C is also preferably provided with adjustable stops K, which may be secured in segmental slots K in the flange by means of clamping-bolts for the purpose of limiting or gaging the angle through which a pipe is bent. Further, the curvature of the bend may be varied by means of blocks consisting of ring-segments or collars L of varying thickness, by which the effective diameter of the mandrel D may be altered. Then the pipe to be bent has very thin Walls, these rings are preferably provided with peripheral grooves L, as shown in Fig. 1, the groove on the ring in use being of the same curvature as the pipe to be bent; but for most pipes itwill not be necessary to have grooves in the blocks L.
Instead of bolting the flange C direct to a bench it may be fixed to a beam B, of wood or other suitable material, which is pivotally mounted. as at B, on a bench B and serves as a counter-lever in the bending operation.
Having thus described the nature of this invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim 1. Apparatus for bending metal tubes or rods comprising a fixed pipe having a heavy flange, an eXternally-screw-threaded hollow mandrel secured in the fixed pipe and provided with a clamping-nut, a cored plug in the end of said hollow mandrel adapted to receive the pin of a bending-lever, substantially as described.
2. Apparatus for bending metal tubes or rods comprising a fixed pipe having a heavy flange, an externally-screw-threaded hollow mandrel secured in the fixed pipe, a clampingnut on the said mandrel having blocks on its upper surface and a key adapted to engage the said blocks and turn the clamping-nut, substantially as described.
3. Apparatus for bending metal tubes or rods comprising a fixed pipe having a flange at one end, a mandrel secured in the said pipe, rings of various thicknesses adapted to fit round the said mandrel, means for clamping a pipe or rod on the flange and means for bending the said pipe or rod through any required angle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM KENNEDY.
