To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT W. KALTEN- BAOI-I and JUSTIN GRInss, J r., citizens of the United States of America, residingat Oleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Excavating, Hoisting, and Conveying Buckets; and we do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in excavating, hoisting, and conveying buckets, and pertains more especially to a clam-shell bucket comprising two oppositely-arranged scoops or trays having cutting edges at the bottom and forward ends and pivotally supported, as required, to render them capable of being swung from and toward each other to open and close the bucket, respectively.
One object of this invention is to so relatively arrange the parts of the tray-actuating mechanism of the bucket as will bring the center of gravity of the bucket low down and prevent tipping of the bucket when the bucket is landed on an uneven pile of material.
Another object is to pivotally attach the bars or links which are pivotally connected to the rear portions of the trays to a bail with which the bucket is centrally provided, with the pivotal connections between the said bars or links and the said bail arranged below the axes of the levers, so as to most advantageously place the trays of the bucket when open relative to the pile or bed of material to be excavated or and thereby open the bucket to clevises directly pivoted to rear portions of the trays with the relative arrangement of the parts such that any strains upon the trays and connected mechanism are equally distributed and that multiplication of power in opening the bucket is not necessary.
ith these objects in View and to the end of realizing other advantages hereinafter appearing this invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clam-shell bucket and connected bucket-operating mechanism embodying our invention, and in this figure the bucket is shown closed. Fig. 2 is a right-hand side elevation relative to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bucket and connected mechanism with the bucket open. Fig. 4 is a top plan relative to Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, A and A indicate two oppositely-arranged scoops or trays, which form the body portion of our improved clam-shell bucket. The trays A and A swing rearwardly from or forwardly toward each other, according as the bucket is opened or closed. The bucket illustrated is shown closed in Figs. 1 and 2 and open' in Figs. 3 and 4. Each tray is provided at its rear end and near the top thereof with an axle a, which is arranged horizontally and transversely of the said tray. parallel and arranged in the same plane horizontally. The trays A and A in opening and closing swing in a vertical plane upon the axles a.
Each axle a has bearing in the rear ends of two parallel bars B, which are arranged at opposite sides, respectively, of the tray journaled on the said axle, and in the closed position of the bucket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, extend upwardly as well as forwardly relative to the said tray. therefore, that the trays A and A have hearing on the axles a and that the latter have bearing in the rear ends of the bars B. The
bars B are pivoted at their forward ends, as at Z), horizontally and parallel with the axles a to the lower ends of the end members 12 and 13 of a bail whose upper and central portion comprises two horizontal axles l4 and 15, which are arranged in the same plane horizontally and parallel with each other and with the axles a. The axles 14 and 15 have hearing in the upper ends of both end members 12 and 13 of' the said bail.
Two levers O and O are operatively attached to the tray A. Two levers D and D are operatively attached to the tray A. The levers O O and D D are fulcrumed horizontally and parallel with the axes of the trays to the bail members 12 and 13. The levers O O and D D have their fulcrums coincident and formed by horizontally arranged axles 16 and 17,
The axles a of the two trays are It will be observed,
which extend through the bail members 12 and 13, respectively, a suitable distance above the lower extremities of the said bail members, but preferably a greater distance below the upper extremities of the said bail members. The axles l6 and 17 are parallel with the axes of the trays and arranged in line endwise. The bail members 12 and 13 are preferably tied together and braced apart between their upper ends and the fulcrums of the levers C and D (see Figs. 2 and 4) by a frame or web 8, formed in any approved manner and rigid with the said bail members. The levers U C and D D extend forwardly and upwardly from the connected tray, and the levers C 0 cross the levers D D at the fulcrums of the levers and above the connection of the said levers with the trays. The levers C C are shown pivoted at their lower ends, as at 18, to opposite sides, respectively, of the tray A, horizontally and parallel with the axis of the said tray, at the upper portion of the forward end of the tray. The levers D D are pivoted at their lower end, as at 20, to opposite sides, respectively, of the tray A, horizontally and parallel with the axis of the said tray, at the upper portion of the forward end of the tray. It will be observed, therefore, that the levers C and D at one side of the bucket are fulcrumed to the bail member 13 by means of the axle 16, that the levers C and D at the opposite side of the bucket are fulcrumed to the bail member 12 by means of the axle 17, that the said axles or fulcrums 16 and 17 are located above a point centrally between the ends'of the levers, that the pivotal connections between the bars B and the bail members 13 and 14 are arranged below the fulcrums of the levers (J and D, and that the axes of the pivotal connections between the said bars and the said bail members are all preferably arranged coincidently and vertically below the fulcrums of the aforesaid levers, as shown.
The levers C and C are connected together and braced apart at and above their axes (see Figs. 2 and 4) by a frame 0, which is journaled upon the axles 16 and 17 and connected at the top to the said levers, preferably by axles 22, which are horizontally arranged parallel with the axes of the said levers and in line endwise and attached to and borne by the said frame and the said levers. The levers D and D are connected together and braced apart at and above their axes (see Figs. 2 and 4) by a frame cl, which is journaled upon the axles 16 and 17 and connected at the top to the said levers, preferably by axles 24, which are horizontally arranged parallel with the axes of the said levers and in line endwise and attached to and borne by the said frame and the said levers. Upon each axle 22 is loosely mounted aguide-sheave 23, and upon each axle 24 is loosely mounted a guide-sheave 25 Two bucket-closing cables G and G are suitably attached at one end to the axle 14, thence lead downwardly to and around the sheaves 25, connected with the upper ends of the levers D, thence lead in under the sheaves 23, connected with the upper ends of the levers C, thence lead into engagement with guidesheaves 26, which are loosely mounted on the axle 15, and thence lead to winding drums or means (not-shown) employed in operating the said cables. The levers C are provided at their upper ends with guards 27, arranged to prevent displacement of the cables G from the sheaves 23. The levers D are provided at their upper ends with guards 28, arranged to prevent displacement of the cables G from the sheaves 25.
The upper portions of the levers D are provided with laterally-projecting stop-forming lugs 30, which are engaged by the levers C in the full-open position of the bucket and limit the movement of the levers as required in operating the levers to separate the trays A and A in opening the bucket.
Upon each axle a, between the bars B, connected with the said axle, is journaled a clevis L. Two bucket-holding cables R and R are operatively attached in any approved manner to the clevis of the different axles a and a, respectively, and leadlfrom the connected clevis upwardly to and in under guide- sheaves 34 and 35, respectively, which are loosely mounted on the axles 14 and 15, respectively. (See Figs. 2 and 4.) The axles 14 and 15 are provided with a guard 32, arranged to prevent displacement of the cables R from the sheaves 34 and 35, which guard extends over the said sheaves and is provided with holes 33, arranged to accommodate the extension of the said cables through the guard upwardly from the sheaves. The cables R are operated in any approved manner. Cable-operating devices are too well known in the art to require illustration and description in this application.
It will be observed that the bucket hereinbefore described is simple and durable in construction and reliable in its operation; that the bucket-traysA and A are when the bucket is laden and closed and suspended over a pile or bed of material opened by the gravity of the bucket and contents upon holding the cables R and releasing the bucket-closing cables G; that the bucket when open is closed by actuating the levers C and D upon winding up or pulling on the cables G; that the bars B are attached to the end members of the bail below the fulcrums or axes of the levers C U and D D, so as to accommodate the actuation of the trays in closing or operating the bucket independently of each other and to enable the trays upon opening the bucket to assume a position vertically on end or with the rear ends nearer to each other than their forward ends; that the arrangement of the parts generally is such that the tray-actuating mechanism and the center of gravity of the bucket are exceptionally low down relative to the cutting edges of the trays when'the bucket is open, so that the liability of the bucket to tip when the said bucket is landed upon an uneven pile or bed of material is reduced toa minimum; that all of the sheaves employed in guiding the bucket-holding cables R upwardly from the bucket above the bucket-closing levers are borne by the upper portion (axles .14 and 15) of the bail of the bucket, and that the cables R, are attached, by means of clevises, to the axles 60 independently of the attachment to the said axles of the bars B and between the said bars, so that the connection of the cables R with the trays is most direct, that the opening of the bucket is readily effectible without any multiplication of power, and any strains upon the trays and connected mechanism are equally distributed.
What we claim is 1. In a bucket whose body portion is composed of suitably-supported trays arranged to swing outwardly and upwardly or inwardly and downwardly according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket; bucket-closing levers operatively attached to the trays and fulcrumed to the bail with the axes of the levers coincident and parallel with the axes of the trays; bars pivotally connected, at one end,
to the trays at the rear ends of the trays and.
pivotally supported, at the other end, below the fulcrums of the levers, and means for operating the levers.
2. In a bucket whose body portion is composed of suitably-supported trays arranged to swing outwardly and upwardly or inwardly and downwardly according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally of the bucket; levers operatively attached to the trays and suitably fulcrumed to the lower portion of the bail; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays and pivotally supported, at the other end, below the fulcrums of the levers, and means for operating the levers.
3. In a bucket whose body portion is composed of suitably-supported trays arranged to swing outwardly and upwardly or inwardly and downwardly according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally of the trays; bucket-closing. levers operatively attached to the forward portions of the trays and suitably fulcrumed to the bail; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivoted, at the other end, to the bail below the fulcrums of the levers, and means for operating the levers.
4. In a bucket whose body portion is composed of suitably-supported trays arranged to and suitably fulcrumed to the bail; bars pivotally connected at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivoted, at the other end, to the bail below the fulcrums of the levers. and means for operating the levers.
5. In a bucket whose body portion is com- I posed of suitably-supported trays arranged to swing outwardly and upwardly or inwardly and downwardly according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket; levers operatively attached to the trays at the forward ends of the trays and fulcrumed to the bail, with the axes of the levers coincident and parallel with the axes of the bucket-sections; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivoted, at the other end, to the end members of the bail below the fulcrums of the levers, with the axes of the pivotal connections between the said bars and the bail coincident, and means for operating the levers.
6. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; an upright bail arranged centrally and transversel y of the bucket and having end members arranged a suitabledistance apart laterally; levers operatively attached to the trays and fulcrumed to the end members of the bail with the axes of the levers coincident and parallel with the axes of the trays; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the trays rearwardly of the levers and pivotally supported, at the other end, below the fulcrums of the levers, and means for operating the levers.
7. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; an upright bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket and having end members arranged a suitable distance apart laterally; levers operatively attached to the trays at the forward ends of the trays and suitably fulcrumed to the end members of the bail between the central portions and lower extremities of the said bail members; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays and pivotally supported, at the other end, below the fulcrums of the levers, and means for operating the levers.
8. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed.

9. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket and having end members arranged a suitable distance apart laterally; levers operatively attached to the trays at the forward ends of the trays and suitably fulcrumed to the end members of the bail; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivoted, at the other end, to the end members of the bail vertically below the fulcrums of the levers; means for operating the levers, and cables connected to the rear portions of the trays.
10. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination, of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally between and transversely of the bucket and having end members arranged a suitable distance apart laterally; levers operatively attached to the forward portions of the trays and fulcrumed to the end members respectively of the bail, with the axes of the levers parallel with the axes of the trays and coincident; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivoted, at the other end, to the end members of the bail below the fulcrums of the levers, with the axes of the pivotal connections between the said bars and the said bail members coincident; means for operating the levers, and cables connected to the rear portions of the trays.
11. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket and having end members arranged a suitable distance apart laterally; two levers operatively attached to opposite sides respectively of the forward portion of one of the trays and suitably fulcru med to the bail; two levers operatively attached to opposite sides respectively of the forward portion of the other of the said trays and suitably fulcrumed to the different end members respectively of the bail and crossing the first-mentioned levers; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivotally supported, at the other end, below the fulcrums of the levers, and cables operatively connected with the levers.
12. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket and having end members arranged a suitable distance apart laterally; two levers attached to opposite sides respectively of the forward portion of 'one of the trays and fulcrumed to the difierent end members respectively of the bail; means tying together and bracing apart the said levers; two levers operatively attached to opposite sides respectively of the forward portion of the other of the trays and fulcrumed to the different end members respectively of the bail and crossing the first-mentioned levers, with the axes of all of the said levers parallel with the axes of the trays and coincident; means tying together and bracing apart the second-mentioned levers; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivoted, at the other end, to the end members of the bail below the fulcrums of the levers, and cables operatively connected with the levers.
13. In aclam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally between and transversely of the bucket and having end members arranged a suitable distance apart laterally and a frame or web between and connecting the said bail members together; levers operatively attached to the forward portions of the trays and suitably fulcrumed to the end members of the bail; bars pivotally connected at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivoted, at the other end, to the end members of the bail below the fulcrums of the levers, and means for operating the levers.
14. In a clam-shell. bucket having two oppositely-arranged trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket; levers operatively attached to the sides of the forward portion of one of the trays and suitably fulcrumed to the bail; levers operatively attached to the sides of the forward portions of the other of the said trays, and suitably fulcrumed to the bail and crossing the first-mentioned levers; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivotally supported, at the other end, below the fulcrums of the levers; cables operatively connected with the levers, and other cables connected to the rear portions of the trays.
15. In aclarn-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or close 1, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket; two horizontally-arranged axles borne by the bail a suitable distance below the top of the bail and arranged in line endwise; levers operati vely attached to the trays at the forward ends of the trays and mounted on the said axles; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays,and pivotallysupported, at the other end, below the aforesaid axles, and means for operating the levers.
16. In aclam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination'of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket; two horizontally-arranged axles supported from the bail below the top of the bail and arranged in line end wise; levers operatively attached to the forward portion of one of the trays at opposite sides respectively of the respective tray and fulcruined to the bail by one of the aforesaid axles; a frame or web connecting the said levers together above the fulcrums of the levers and mounted on the axles; two levers operatively attached to the forward portion of the other of the trays at opposite sides respectively of the respective tray and fulcrumed to the. bail by the other of the axles and crossing the first-mentioned levers; a frame or web connecting the secondmentioned levers together above the fulcrums of the levers and mounted on the axles; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivotally supported, at the other end, below the fulcrums of the levers, and means for operating the levers.
17. In a clam-shell buckethaving two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket and provided at the top with coincidently-arranged sheaves; upright levers operatively attached to the forward portions of the trays and fulcrumed to the bail; with the axes of the levers, parallel with the axes of the trays; sheaves borne by the levers at the upper ends of the levers; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivotally supported, at the other end, and cables attached, at one end, to the upper portion of the bail, thence leading to and around the sheaves of the lever or levers attached to one of the trays, thence leading to and in under the sheaves of the lever oi levers attached to the other tray, and ghence in under the aforesaid sheaves of the ail.
18. In a clam-shell bucket havingtwo oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other. according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket and having end members which are arranged a suitable distance apart laterally and an upper central portion comprising two parallel axles extending between the end members of the bail; two levers operatively attached to opposite sides respectively of the forward portions of one of the trays and fulcrumed to the different end members respectively of the bail; two levers operatively attached to opposite sides respectively of the forward portion of the other of the said trays and fulcrumed to the different end members respectively of the bail and crossing the firstmentioned levers, with the axes of all of the said levers parallel with the axes of thetrays; sheaves borne by the levers at the upper ends of the levers; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays and pivotally supported at the other end; two sheaves on one of the aforesaid axles a suitable distance apart longitudinally of the respective axle; cables attached, at one end, to the other of the aforesaid axles, thence leading to and around the sheaves of the levers attached to one of the trays, thence leading to and in under the sheaves of the levers attached to the other trays, and thence in under the aforesaid axlesheaves.
19. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket and provided, at the top, with sheaves arranged a suitable distance apart laterally and with their axes parallel with the axes of the trays; uprightlevers operatively attached to the forward portions of the trays and fulcrumed to the bail; with the axes of the levers parallel with the axes of the trays; sheaves borne by the levers at the upper ends of the levers; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the rear portions of the trays, and pivotally supported at the other end; cables attached, at one end, to the upper portion of the bail, thence leading to and around the sheaves of the lever or levers attached to one of the trays, thence leading to and in under the sheaves of the lever or levers attached to the other tray, and thence in under the aforesaid sheaves of the bail, and guards borne by the levers and arranged to prevent displacement of the cables from the sheaves of the levers.
20. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said IIO trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket; levers operatively attached to the forward portions of the trays and fulcrumed to the bail; with the axes of all of the said levers parallel with the axes of the trays and coincident; means for operating the levers; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the trays rearwardly of the levers, and pivotally supported at the other end; clevises pivoted to the trays, with the axes of the pivotal connection between the clevises and the trays coincident and parallel with the pivotal connections between the aforesaid bars and the trays; guide-sheaves borne by the upper portion of the bail, and cables attached, atone end, to the clevises, thence leading to and in under the said sheaves and thence upwardly.
21. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket; levers operatively attached to the forward portion of the trays and fulcrumed to the bail, with the axes of all of the said levers parallel with the axes of the trays and coincident; means for operating the levers; bars pivotally connected, at one end, to the trays rearwardly of thelevers, and pivotally supported at the other end; clevises pivoted to'the trays, with the axes of the pivotal connections between the clevises and the trays parallel with the pivotal connections between the aforesaid bars and thetrays; guide-sheaves borne by the upper portion of the bail; cables attached, at one end, to the clevises, thence leading to and in under the said sheaves and thence upwardly, and a guard borne by the bail and extending over the sheaves and arranged to prevent displacement of the cables from the sheaves, which guard has holes to accommodate the upward extension of the cables from the sheaves. p
22. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged suitably-supported trays arranged to swing from or toward each other according as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket and .having end members which are arranged a suitable distance apart laterally and an upper central portion comprising two parallel axles extending between the endrnembers of the bail; levers operatively attached to the forward portions of the trays and fulcrumed to the end members of the bail, with the axes of the levers parallel with the axes of the trays and coincident; means for operating the levers; two clevises pivoted to the different trays respectively, with the pivotal connection between each clevis andthe connected tray forming the axis of the said tray; two guide-sheaves on the different aforesaid axles respectively, and cables attached, at one end, to the clevises and thence leading to and in under the different aforesaid sheaves respectively and thence upwardly. 23. In a clam-shell bucket having two oppositely-arranged trays arranged to swing from or toward each otheraccording as the bucket is opened or closed, the combination of the said trays; a bail arranged centrally and transversely of the bucket; levers for actuating the trays from their open into their closed position; meansfor operatingthe levers; twoclevises pivoted to the different trays respectively, with the pivotal connection between each clevis and the connected tray forming the axis of the said tray; two suitably-spaced guidesheaves borne by the upper portion of the bail; cables attached, at one end, to the clevises and thence leading to and in under the different sheaves respectively and thence upwardly, and a guard borne by the bail and extending over the sheaves and arranged to prevent displacement of the cables from the sheaves, which guard has holes to accommodate the extension of the cables from the sheaves upwardly through the guard.
