Description
l ROBERT M, MARCHANT, OF WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND.
Letters Patent No, 80,417, ma Juzyes, 1868;
IMPROVED RAILROAD-RAIL.
t tit Stlgtmlt nient in im itin Entert attnt mit quitting mi inflige same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, Romani` M. MARCHANT, of Wellington, New Zealand, have invented a new and improved Compound Rail; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con-lV i struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and '2 are transverse sections. This invention contemplates the combination of steel or wrought iron with Acast iron and timber, (see iig. 1,) or with cast iron wholly, (see iig. 2,) for the construction of-a uniformly-continuous rail, in which rail the poi-tion subjected to wearshall be of steel or wrought iron, and the continuous seat for this portionof the rail shall be of cast iron, either on a substructure of timber, as per o'. 1, or on a longitudinal entirely ot' castiron, as per-` fig. 2, the whole being securely united together by screw-bolts, which are to be screwed intoand set up in the steel or wrought-iron portion of the rail itself. l l
The rail, constructed as per ff. 1, may be keyed on the ordinary sleepers by wooden keys, or otherwise secured, as may be desired:
The rail, constructed as per iig. v2, will only require such support under exceptional circumstances.
The weight of metal and sizeof rail-will depend on the character of tbetraiic to which itis subjected.
For the application of Bessemer steel as the wearingportion, where the trahie is great and renewalsfrequent, the advantagesgoered-by this rail, in either-oi` the forms shown in gs. 1 and 2, are eviden't.
To enableany one skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a rail of Bessemer steel or wrought iron, in twelve-foot or other 'convenient lengths, attached to a substructure of east-iron seat and timber longitudinally by threequartenineh screw-bolts, two feet apart, except at the joints, where tbe attachment is made by two three-quarter-inch screw-bolts, one andseveneighths of an inch from centre to centre of screw-bolt.
B represen-ts cast-iron seat of rail in four-feet lengths, or other sub-multiple of A, having tw`o slots of three and a half inches long, each slot, and two feet apart from centre-to centre of slot, for free transmission of screw-bolts to rail. l
C represents wrought-iron screw-bolts, screwing into A,. and two feet apartfrom centre to centre', except at joints, where these bolts are one and seven-eighths of an inch from centre to centre of bolt.
D represents timber, dowclled at joints, and intwelve-feet lengths, being bored for passage of three-quarterinch bolts atjoints ofi-ail A, and elsewhere two feet apart.
Erepresents the position and size of dowel atjoints of D, F washer under head of C, and g groove in continuous casting B, to be packed atjoints. Y
A, in tig. 2, represents the same kind of rail as inthe figure above, but in sixteen-feet or other convenient lengths, attached to the cast-iron longitudinal by threcquarterinch screw-bolts, two feet apart, except at the joints, where the attachment is made by two threequarter-inch screw-bolts one and seven-eighths of an inch from centre to centre of screw-bolt. l l
H represents a cast-iron longitudinal seating-rail A, in eight-feetA lengths,'or `other sub-multiple of A, having four slots of three inches-long each slot, and two feet apart from centre to centre, for free transmission of screw-bolts to rail.
The outer line shows the bellying oi' the casting at these slots.
I represents shoeformingjunction atjoints' of H. 4 i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein sas new, and desire to secure by4 Letters Patent, isli In the construction of railways, the arrangement of the rails A, with a continuous substructure, B or H, either with or without the wooden foundation D or iron' plates I, the whole secured -`or bolted together, Yin the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described. p
As evidence that I claim the foregoing, I havehereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
R. M. MARGHANT.
