Be it known that I, MARLoN H. IVINsLOW, of Terre Haute, county of Vigo, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Platform-Scale; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient and practical means for adjusting the bearing between the transverse levers and the longitudinal levers of a platform-scale. Heretofore the bearings in said scales have been immovable, so that after wear of the bearings and parts it has been very dificult to readjust'the relation between the levers, especially where they are multiplying-levers, so that the proper result will be obtained. It has been done heretofore by tearing up the scale, taking out the longitudinal levers, and relocating the stirrup connections at the ends of the longitudinal levers. WVith my invention all that is necessary is to operate certain set-screws and shift the bearing in the longitudinal levers so that they will operate accurately without removing the longitudinal levers or altering any of the parts. This adjustment can be readily made and the scales kept in perfect and exact condition of oper ation.
Another feature of the invention consists in the idea of mounting the transverse levers between a pair of posts, with alaterally-extending knife-edge apparent on each side the outer end of the cross-bar.
Another feature consists in the bearing between the ends of the cross-bar that supports the platform.
The various features of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a portion of aplatform-scale with certain parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bearing portion of the longitudinal lever, the ends of the lever being broken away. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a scale formed of a number of sections, showing the adjustable bearing applied to evenbalance levers and also multiplying-levers. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the scale shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a singlesection scale with the adjustable bearing arrangement applied to a multiplying-lever adjacent the end lever. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the same.
In detail, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, scales of this kind are made with an end lever 10, fulcrumed at its outer end on the post 23, and with a pair of oppositely-placed cross-levers 12 connected with the end lever 10, so as to transmit to said end lever the load that comes from the platform on the cross-levers. Said cross-levers are mounted on posts 13, and the load of the platform rests between the ends of said cross-levers. The weight on the end lever is transmitted to the longitudinal multiplying-lever 14 by means of the links or stirrups 18. Said multiplying-lever 1A is fulcrumed on the posts 23 to the left-hand side of the middle of the lever, and at the middle of the lever substantially the cross-levers 12 are connected, whereby the load of the platform is transmitted also to said multiplyinglever. An even-balanced lever 15 connects said multiplying-lever 1 1 and another multiplying-lever 16, fulcrumed on the posts 23. The weight of the platform is transmitted to that lever also through the cross-levers 12. The weight is transmitted from the lever 16 to the lever 17, through which it is transmitted to the scale. In Fig. 6 the longitudinal lever 19 is an even-balance lever so far as transmitting weight from the end lever 10; but it is a multiplying-lever in transmitting weight from the cross-levers 12. Said lever 19 is fulcrumed midway between its ends; but the weight is transmitted to it through the cross-levers 12.
As seen in Fig. 1, the longitudinal lever 14: has bearing-shoulders 20,'holding downwardly-extending knife-edges 21, resting on the bearing-block 22, that is concave on the under side and lits on the convex upper end of the post 23. This construction is on both sides of said lever. The weight from the cross-levers 12 is transmitted through the stirrup to the bearing-block 26, resting on the knife-edge 27, that is held by the adjustable block 28, that rests upon the shoulders 29 and extends through the opening 30 in said longitudinallever. The bearingjustdescribed may be adjustable longitudinally of the lever by the set-screws 31, there being four of them passing through flanges 32 in the sides of the beam. Said set-screws bear against the block 28 and push it longitudinally of the lever. Set-nuts 33 hold the set-screws in place, and the heads 34: enable one to operate said set-screws with a wrench. If the machine does not Weigh right, it may be readily adjusted by readjusting said set-screws, so as to move the bearing-block 28 to the proper place to cause the proper multiplication of the scale.
The outer end of the cross-lever 12 has a laterally-extending bracket l0 on each side, containing a knife-edge 41, that rests on a bearing-block 42 on each side that is concave on the under side, and said bearing-blocks rest upon the convex upper end of two posts L3, one on each side of the cross-lever. Said cross-lever has also between its ends oppositely-extending brackets 45, in which the knife-edge 4:6 is secured. Upon this knifeedge a bearing-plate 4E7 rests, the upper sur face of said bearing-plate having recesses in it for loose rollers 48, extending in one direction and supporting a loose bearing-plate 49, that is recessed on its upper side and carries loose rollers 50, upon which the plate 51, secured to the under side of the platform-beam 52, rests. The rollers 50 extend transversely of the rollers 48. In this way the weight of the platform is always distributed to all parts of the knife-edge 46.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In platform-scales, a longitudinal lever having an opening transversely through it with laterally-extending flanges surrounding said opening, a bearing extending transversely through said opening, set-screws in said flanges abutting against said bearing on each side so as to render the bearing adjustable longitudinally of said lever, and cross levers for transmitting the weight of the platform to said bearing.
2. In a platform-scale, a platform, transverse levers for supporting it, each of said' transverse levers having a lateral]y-extendin g bracket on each side, a knife-edge secured in each of said brackets, a bearing-block resting upon said knife-edge, rollers upon said bearing-block, another bearing-block upon said rollers, rollers upon said upper bearing-Mock arranged transversely of the rollers below, and a plate resting upon said upper rollers and which supports the platform.
