ELECTROMAGNETIC VALVE.

Be it known that I, IsAAo Gr. WATERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electromagnetic Valves,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electromagnetic valves, and more particularly to waste-valves.
The present invention relates to the general type of waste-valve set forth in my copending application,filed September 9, 1903, Serial No. 172,489, embodying the idea of using a single solenoid or coil around the waste-pipe of any receptacle, such as a lavatory or bathtub, and a spring-pressed armature slidable in or on the pipe and controlled by the solenoid, a spring-seated waste-valve, a cam cooperating with the waste-valve, and a pawl and ratchet-Wheel for operating the cam; but the improvements embodied in the present invention are adaptable for use not only in connection with the type of valve of the aforesaid application,but also on the valves claimed in other applications heretofore filed by me, instances of which are my applications, filed July 9, 1903, Serial No. 164:,888, and Serial No. 171,215, filed August 29, 1903, and other valve applications executed of evendate with the present application.
The object of the present invention is the provision of improvements supplemental to the valve-operating mechanism proper, whereby the valve will always be brought to the exact position to which it should be moved to open the valve to its full extent or to completely close said valve, whether or not the valveoperating member moves its predetermined distance in operation.
The invention contemplates the use of novel supplemental means for adjusting the valve on the operation thereof to the proper position, so that if only partly opened or only partly closed by the action of the valve-operatingmember such incomplete movement of the valve will be completed and the fault rectified automatically.
The invention is set forth in detail hereinafter and recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2, an enlarged View of theinvention, partly in section; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the different parts in action and the cam and valve-stem in full lines; and Fig. A, an exterior view of the pipe-section with the armature and solenoid in section, showing the cut-out portion of the pipe-section and illustrating a modified form of packing.
A lavatory bowl or basin is shown at 1, having the overflow-channel 2 and valve seat 3 for waste-valve 4, and 5 is the waste-pipe section, suitably coupled to the basin 1 at 6. The waste-valve stem 7 operates through a stationary cross piece or guide 7 and carries a guide 8, movable with said stem, which is suitably guided in the pipe 5 to prevent it from turning. The waste-valve has a normal tendency to close on account of the interposition of a coil-spring 9 between guide 8 and cross-piece 7, and at the lower end of the stem is a roller 10.
Jon rnaled in the pipe-section 5 transversely is a shaft 11, suitably packed at 12, which has secured thereto a cam-wheel 13, having depressions 1 1 at the ends of its minor axis and depressions at the ends of itsv major axis. The roller 10 bears on the cam-wheel and is adapted to snap into and out of the different depressions as the cam-wheel turns to thereby open and close the waste-valve. I
The outer face of the pipe-section 5 is cut away at 16, and the shaft 11 is there provided with a rigidlyrsecured ratchet-wheel 17 ,whose teeth are arranged in four sets of three teeth.
each. A spring-pressed pawl 18, pivoted to the pipe-section, prevents backward turning of the ratchet-wheel and valve.
Screwed on the pipe-section 5 is a nut 19, which supports a shell 20, packing 21 being used between the shell and nut, around which is a solenoid 22, held against a shoulder 23 on the pipe-section 5.
Surrounding the shell and slidable thereon is a tubular armature 2 1, which is pressed in one direction by a coil-spring 25.
In Fig. 1 a modification of the above construction exists in the use of packing 26 and 'a washer 2'7, interposed between the spring when pressed back again by the spring 25. Pivoted at 32 to the armature is a pawl 33, having three teeth 34, adapted to engage the nearest set of the teeth on the ratchet-wheel when the armature is attracted by the solenoid. This pawl is pressed into engagement with the ratchet-wheel by a spring 35 on the armature.
The supply of current to the solenoid may be controlled by any suitable switch; but any one of a series of temporary contact-switches set forth in my Patents Nos. 775,016, 775,053, 775,055, dated November 15, 1904, is particularly adapted for this purpose, as the solenoid is designed to actuate the armature on temporary electrical energization. When the solenoid is energized, the armature is attracted thereinto, and the pawl turns the ratchet- Wheel a quarter-revolution, opening or closing the waste-valve according to the prior position of the latter. i/Vhen the'armature is thus actuated, the shoulder 31 strikes against the nut 28, and if the valve has not been positioned correctly the engagement of the nut and said shoulder causes the valve to be posi:
tioned exactly correct. When the armature is returned to normal position by the spring 25, the shoulder 30 strikes the nut 28, and if the valve was not correctly positioned previously by the shoulder 31 the engagement of shoulder 30 and nut 28 properly positions the valve.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the use of the valve rectifying or adjusting means in connection with a valve of the type set forth in the present application, as I am well aware that the said valve adjusting or rectifying means can be used in connection with rotary valves of different types and the valves of my application heretofore enumerated herein.
In my application, Serial No. 188,783, I have disclosed a valve operated by a toothed wheel and a toothed actuating member cooperating with said toothed wheel and adapted to play between predetermined limits.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a valve, of a movable member for opening and closing the valve which is movable relatively to the valve, and means for automatically adjusting the position of the valve after the completed cooperation of the operating member with the valve if the valve has been improperly opened or closed by the valve-operating member.
. 2. The combination with a valve, and a rotary member for operating the valve, of a movable valve-operating member coacting with the rotary member aforesaid and movable relatively to the valve, to operate the valve, and means for automatically adjusting or rectifying the position of the rotary member after the completed cooperation of the operating member with the valve to rectify the position of the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the valve-operating member.
3. The combination with a valve, and a rotary member for operating the valve, of a movable valve-operating member coacting with the rotary member aforesaid and movable relatively to the valve to operate the valve, and means carried by the valve-operating member and adapted to coact with the rotary member aforesaid after the completed cooperation of the operating member with the valve to rectify the position of the valve if the valve is improperly operated by the valveoperating member.
1. The combination with a valve, of a rotary polygonal member coacting with the valve, a valve-operating member, and a member actuated by the valve-operating member adapted to engage a side of the polygonal member aforesaid and rectify the position of the valve if the valve is improperly operated by the valve-operating member.
5. The combination with a valve, of a rotary polygonal member coacting with the valve, a valve-operating member,'and shoulders or abutments on the valve-operating member adapted on the advance and retrograde movements of the valve operating member to respectively engage the polygonal member aforesaid and rectify or adjust the position of the valve if the valve is improperly operated by the valve-operating member.
6. The combination with avalve, of a movable armature movable relatively to the valve I for operating the valve, an electromagnet controlling the armature, and means operated by the armature for automatically adjusting or rectifying the position of the valve after the completed cooperation of the operating member with the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the armature.
7. The combination with a valve, of a movable armature movable relatively to the valve for operating the valve, when said armature is moved in a given direction, an electromag-. net for operating the armature in one direction, means for operating the armature in the other direction, and means operated by the armature for automatically adjusting or rectifying the position of the valve after the completed cooperation of the operating member with the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the armature.
8. The combination with a valve, of a movable armature movable relatively to the valve for operating the valve when said armature is moved in a given direction, an electromagnet for operating the armature in one direction, a spring for operating the armature in the other direction, and means operated by the armature for automatically adjusting or rectifying the position of the valve after the completed cooperation of the operating member with the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the armature.
9. The combination with a valve, of a rotary member for operatipg the valve, a polygonal member cooperating with the valve, an armature for operating the rotary member, an electromagnet controlling said armature, and a shoulder on the armature adapted to engage the polygonal member and rectify or adjust the position of the valve if the valveoperating member has improperly operated the valve.
10. The combination with a valve, of a rotary valve operating member, a polygonal member cooperating with the valve-operating member, an armature for turning the rotary member aforesaid, shoulders on the armature to engage the polygonal member and rectify the position of the valve when the movement of the armature in either direction improperly operates the valve, and an electromagnet for operating the armature.
11. The combination with a valve, of a movable member for opening and closing the valve, said member being movable relatively to the valve, and means supplemental to the member aforesaid for automatically adjusting or rectifying the position of the valve if improperly operated by the movable valve opening and closing member.
12. The combination with a valve and a rotary member for operating the valve, of a movable valve-operating member for opening and closing the valve which is movable relatively to the valve and coacts with the rotary member aforesaid to open and close the valve, and means supplemental to the valve-operating member for automatically adjusting or rectifying the position of the rotary member to rectify the position of the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the valveoperating member.
13. The combination with a valve, of a movable valve-operating member movable relatively to the valve, and supplemental means carried by the movable valve-operating member and adapted to coact with the valve to rectify the position of the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by said valve-operating member.
14. The combination with a valve, of a movable armature movable relatively to the valve for operating said valve, an electromagnet controlling the armature, and supplemental means operated by the armature for automatically adjusting or rectifying the position of the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the armature.
15. The combination with a valve, of a movable armature movable relatively to the valve and adapted for operating the valve when moved in a given direction, an electromagnet for operating the armature in one direction, means for operating the armature in the other direction, and supplemental means operated by the armature for automatically'adjusting or rectifying the position of the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the armature.
16. The combination with a valve, of a movable armature movable relatively to the valve and adapted for operating the valve when said armature is moved in a given direction, an electromagnet for operating the armature in one direction, a spring for operating the armature in the other direction, and supplemental means operated by the armature for automat ically adjusting or rectifying the position of the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the armature.
17. The combination with a valve, of a rotary member for operating the valve, a solenoid, an armature slidable in the solenoid and movable relatively to the valve, a spring for projecting the armature from the solenoid, means carried by the armature for operating the rotary member, and supplemental means carried by the armature adapted to automatically adjust or rectify the position of the valve if the valve has been improperly operated by the armature.
18. The combination with a valve, of a ratchet-wheel for operating the valve, a solenoid, an armature slidable in the solenoid and relatively to the valve, a spring for projecting the armature, a pawl carried by the armature adapted to engage the ratchet-wheel and turn it, a polygonal member cooperating with the valve, and a shoulder on the armature which is engageable with the polygonal member to automatically rectify or adjust the Valve if thevalve has been improperly operated by the armature.
