bells or gongs, and has reference particularly to the signal bell or gong used upon surface cars and operated by the driver or motorman; and the object of myinvention is the provision of a car signal bell or gong which can be applied to any of the surface cars in use at a small expense and which will overcome the vital defeet and objections to the bell in common use by lessening the chances of breaking or cracking of the bell, owing to the incessant and hard usage to which the single bell is subjected, and providing an emergency bell or gong in case one becomes cracked or broken.
With this object in view my invention consists in a pair of bells or gongs and mechanism for striking either of said bells and, further, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for service substantially as dis closed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved signals bells or gongs.
Fig. 2 represents a similar view ofa modified construction of my invention. Fig. 3 represents a plan detail view of the guide-plate used with the construction of my invention shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4; represents a similar view of the guide-plate used with the form of my invention shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A designates one of the end platforms of a car, and a set of my bells is applied to each end platform, and each platform is provided with an opening B, in which fits the elliptical guide-plate C, which in the form shown in Fig. 3 is provided with two guidingopenings D and in the form shown in Fig. 4 is provided with a single guiding-opening E and with communicating guiding slots or kerfs F. From the platform depends a single rod G, which has a threaded portion H, and upon the rod is mounted the twin bells J, retained at the proper places and in line upon the rod by the securing-nuts K, and adjacent to the vertical twin bells is the hanger or bracket having the vertical portion L and the offset portion or lower end L, and to the vertical portion is fulcrumed the bell-striking lever M, and to the offset portion is fulcrumed the long curved bell-striking lever M, and to operate either of said levers to cause them to sound either of the bells I provide the single press-rod N, having the foot-piece O and adapted to be placed in either of the guideopenings D to engage either the short or the long striking-lever, according to the bell to be sounded.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 2, I provide the vertical hanger or bracket P and the press-rod Q, which is formed with the guiding-lip R and has two lugs S, which engage either of the similar striking-levers T, and the operation is the same in both cases. With the construction shown in Fig. 2 the guide-plate shown in Fig. 4 is used, as is evident.
The operation of my signal bells or gongs will be readily understood, and it is evident that either of the bells may be used by simply adjusting the foot-rod, and in this manner the wear and tear upon the bells can be adjusted and the possibility of cracking said bells is eliminated.
I claim-- In a hell or gong, the combination of a single vertical hanger, a series of'parallel verticallydisposed bells carried by and adjustable on said hanger, a hanger or bracket adjacent to the said bell-hanger, a series of levers pivoted in said latter hanger and having a striker at one end. a push-rod for engaging the other end of either of the levers, and a guide-plate for the rod having means for adapting the single push-rod to engage either of the levers.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
