To all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS W. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Electric Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to electric door-locks connected with an electric alarm at a distant point.
rIhe object of the invention is to provide a new and improved electric lock arranged to give an alarm when tampered with by unauthorized persons before such persons can open the door suiiiciently to effect an entrance into the house.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a rear face view of the improvement, parts being in section, the rear cover being removed and the main bolt and the auxiliary bolt being both in a projected position. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, showing the main bolt and the auxiliary bolt both retracted. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the improvement, showing the main bolt in projected position and the auxiliary bolt in a retracted position. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line 4 4: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view of the improvement.
The automatic electric lock is mounted in a casing A, secured to a door B, and in the said casing are mounted to slide the springpressed main bolt C and the auxiliary boltD, both adapted to engage a keeper E on the jamb B for the door, (see Fig. 5,) it being understood that the said mainl bolt and the said auxiliary bolt are preferably of the construction shown and described more fully in the application for Letters Patent of the United States for a lock, filed by me under even date herewith, Serial No. 230,904.
Themain bolt (l is controlled by a retracting mechanism consisting of a cam Fl on a cam-plate F, adapted to be turned either by the operator manipulating a knob on the inside of the door-casing or by the operator using a key in the tumbler-lock on the outside of the door, and preferably of the construction shown and described in the application for Letters Patent of the UnitedStates, filed by me under even date herewith. The cam-plate F of the retracting mechanism also controls a locking-lever H, which in turn is also controlled by means of a pivoted arm I from the auxiliary bolt D, it being understood that the locking-lever I-I serves to normally hold the main bolt C locked in a projected position, and when the operator turns the cam-plate F the locking-lever H is first swung out of engagement with the main bolt and then the latter is retracted on further turning of the camplate F, either by turning the knob G or the key in the tum bier-lock referred to. The locking-lever H is also swung out of locking engagement with the main bolt C by the auxiliary bolt at the time the door is being closed, and the auxiliary bolt is pushed inward or retracted by the keeper E somewhat ahead of the main bolt C, so that the latter is unlocked and free to slide inward on its head coming in contact with the keeper E. Then the door is closed, the main bolt in a projected position engages the keeper E, while the auxiliary bolt D is held retracted by its head abutting against a blank face on the keeper.
As the lock so far described is the same as the one referred to in the application above referred to, further detailed description of the same is not deemed necessary.
. In the rear face-plate A of the casing A is held a stud J, on which is mounted to swing a contact-lever K, adapted to be engaged at one end K by the inner end of the auxiliary bolt D and adapted to move with its other end K2 in engagement with a spring contact-plate L, held on a screw or bolt L, insulated on the rear face-plate A. A wire N passes from the screw or bolt L', through an insulated eye A2, to the outside of the casing A to connect with a contact-plate O, attached to the door-jamb B', and adapted to be engaged by a springpressed contact-lever O', fulcrumed on the door-jamb B and riding on the door B to hold the contact-lever O' out of contact with the contact plate O while the door is closed. (See Fig. 5.) The contact-lever O' is connected by a wire N with an electromagnet P, the armature P' of which normally locks a switch-lever F2 in position against the tension of a spring P: and out of contact with a contact-point P. The spring P3 is connected by a wire N2 with the electromagnet, and the contact-point P1 is connected by a wire N3 IOO IIO
with a distant-alarm Ni, connected by a wire N5 with a battery Q or other source of electrical energy, and the battery is connected by the wire N with the switch-lever P2. A wire N7 also connects the battery with the stud J.
On the stud J is mounted to swing independent of the lever K an arm R, pressed on by one end of a spring R,vcoiled on the stud J, and attached at its other end to the lever K. The swinging motion of the arm R is limited by a stop R2 on the lever K, and on the free end of the said arm R is arranged a friction-roller R3, adapted to be engaged by the yoke C of the main bolt C to impart a swinging motion to the said arm R against the tension of its spring R on retracting the main bolt C.
Then the door B is open and both bolts C and D are projected by their springs, the contact-lever is out of engagement with the contact-plate L, while the contact-lever O is in Contact with the contactplate O; but the alarm is not sounded, as the circuit is not interrupted, the switch-lever P2 being out of contact with the switch-point P* and locked in this position by the armature P' of the electromagnet P.
The operation is as follows: Then the door is swung' shut, then thelever O is actuated by the door and moved out of engagement with the contact-plate O, (see Fig. 5,)and the main bolt C and the auxiliary bolt D are retracted against the tension of their springs on coming in contact with the keeper E, and the main bolt C is finally projected by the action of its spring to engage the keeper-recess, and thus lock the door while the auxiliary bolt D is held retracted by the keeper E, as previously explained. The auxiliary bolt D in being retracted by the keeper imparts a swinging motion to the contact-lever K to engage the end K2 thereof with the contact-plate L-that is, a short time after the lever O' has been moved out of engagement 'with the contact-plate O.
From the foregoing it is evident that the contact-lever K is held locked in this position as long as the door is closed, and when the operator, either by turning the knob on the outside or turning the cam-plate F by the insertion of the proper key in the tumbler-lock, retracts the main bolt C and opens the door Y B,.then the auxiliary bolt D moves out of engagement with the keeper E and is shot out by its spring, thus releasing the contact-lever K, which is now swung out of engagement with the contact-plate L by the action of the spring R, put under tension on the retraction of the main bolt C by the yoke C imparting not sounded on either closing the door or on opening the door legitimately.
in case an unauthorized person tampers with the lock while the door is closed by inserting a fiat tool between the door and jamb with a view to force the door, then the door on swinging part way open allows the auxiliary bolt D to move out of contact with the keeper, and hence the auxiliary bolt shoots out without disturbing the position of the contact-lever K, which thus remains in contact with the contact-plate L, and when the door is still further opened the contact-lever Ol is disengaged from the door B and swung into contact with the plate O to close the circuit, so that the circuit for the electromagnet is closed and the armature P attracted to release the switch-lever P2, which is now moved (by the spring P3) in contact with the point Pi to close the circuit for the alarm to sound the latter before the unauthorized person is enabled to open the door for gaining an entrance to the house.
. It is understood that the main bolt C cannot be forced rearward by an unauthorized person, as the locking-lever holds the main bolt against inward movement, and when the door is closed` as previously stated, and the main bolt C shoots out into the keeper, then the position of the contact-lever K is not affected, as the auxiliary bolt D remains retracted and holds the lever K in contact with the contact-plate L.
The auxiliary boit D may be retracted and permanently locked in a retracted position by an arm S, engaging a shoulder Dl on the anxiliary bolt, the said arm S being secured on a short shaft S. journaled in the casing A and carrying at its outer end acrank-arm S2, adapted to be turned by the operator, to turn the shaft S, and thereby cause the arm S to push the auxiliary bolt-D inward and lock it in this position. (See Fig. 2.)
A snap-catch T is arranged on the casing A for permanently locking the main bolt() in a retracted position; but as this snap-catch may be of any approved construction further description thereof is not deemed necessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An electric door-lock provided with a main bolt and an auxiliary bolt, an electromagnet-circuit containing an electromagnet, an alarm-circuit, a switch inthe alarm-circuit, controlled by the armature of the said electromagnet, and two circuit-closers inthe electromagnet-circuit, one of the circuit-closets being' controlled by the door andthe other by the said bolts.
2. An electric lock provided with a keeper, a main bolt, an auxiliary bolt operating in ad'- vance of the main bolt to unlock the latter, a contact-lever adapted to be actuated by the said auxiliary lever, and a fixed contact adapted to be engaged by the said contact-lever.

5. In an electric door-lock, the combination with the door, of a lock on the door, having a main bolt and an auxiliary bolt, a keeper for receiving the projected main bolt and for holding the auxiliary bolt retracted, a contact-lever on the said lock, controlled by the said auxiliary bolt, a spring-pressed arm connected with the contact-lever and controlled by the said main bolt, a contact-plate on the said lock and adapted to be engaged by the said contact-lever, an electI'ornagnet-circuit containing an electromagnet and connected with the said contact-lever and the said contact, a circuit-closer controlled by the said door and arranged in the said armature-circuit, the said circuit-closer closing on opening the door, an alarm-circuit, and a switch for the alarm-circuit, controlled by the armature-lever of the said electromagnet.
