To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. SoHMIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamburg, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to chain hoists or hoisting devices, and has for its object economy in time in the operation of hoisting and in the construction of this class of devices.
The invention consists in certain improvements on the device shown in Letters Patent No. 768,822, granted to me August 30, 1904, as will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved hoisting device; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a top plan view of the same; Fig. 4, an end view with the cap and chain-wheel removed; Fig. 5, a plan view of the cap removed and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 6, a plan view, partly in section, of a modification of the power-transmitting mechanism; and Fig. 7 a vertical section of the same on line 7 7, Fig. 6.
Reference being bad to the drawings and the designating characters thereon, the numeral 1 indicates a shaft on which is a head 2, rotated by a chain 3 on a disk 4:, having a groove 5 therein, in which thechain 3 works, and the disk 4 is provided with an extension 6, which engages a hub 7 on the cover 7, and an extension 8, which engages the outer end of the shaftl and is secured thereto by a setscrew 9 orother preferred means to cause the disk A and the head 2to revolve together. On the shaft 1, between the inner surface of the extension 6 and the outer end of the hub 7 and the shoulder 10, is a ball-bearing 11 to take the end thrust and also to reduce the friction of the rotations of the shaft 1 and the chain-disk 4:. The cover 7 is secured to a flange 12 of the casing or housing 13 by suitable bolts and secures the head 2 in position.
On the face of the head '2 are radio-helical working members 14, which engage the gearwheel or hoisting member 15, on whose periphery are teeth 16, inclined and curved transversely of the wheel, and on one side of the wheel 15 is a cylindrical projection orboss 17, on which a hoisting-chain 18 is supported in a groove 19. The wheel 15 is sumoorted on a shaft 20, which in turn is supported in bearings 21 21 in the walls of the casing, and the casing is provided with a hook 22, swiveled'in a boss 23, on which the hoisting device is suspended. On one edge of the casing is a chamber 2%, in which the head 2 works, and is surrounded by the flange 12, and in said chamber, surrounding the head 2 and concentric therewith, is a revoluble ring 25, provided with ratchet-teeth 26 on the inner edge thereof, which teeth are engaged by a pawl 27, supported in the head 2 and held in engagenient with the teeth by a spring 28, and the outer edge of said ring is engaged by a shoe 29, which is held in engagement with the ring by springs 30 to produce friction and hold the load on the hoisting-chain in any position in its travel.
The head 2, with its working members 14:, may be set at any angle desired to the wheel 15, and to secure constant engagement of the outer surface 31 of said members with the teeth of said wheel they are made to describe a cycloidal curve, and said surface is made angular in transverse cross-section of the member and of a constantly-increasing angle from the root or point of engagement 32 with the teeth 16 outward in the revolution of the wheel, and the inner side or surface 33 of said members 1% are inclined in the same ratio, but in the reverse direction, to prevent binding of the next tooth thereon as thehead 2 re volves.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a modification of the power-transmitting mechanism and in which a shaft Si is provided with a head 35, having working members 36, which engage teeth 37 on a gear-wheel 38 on whose face are working members 39, which engage the teeth 16 of the wheel 15 and is supported on a shaft 10. The object of this construction is to get increased power and to sustain the weight on the device without the use of the ratchet and the brake-shoe and will form subject-matter of a separate application fora patent.
in the constructirm shown power is applied to the shaft 1 of the head 2 through the medium of the disk or chain wheel i, which is outside the casing or housing and may be made of any desired diameter to secure the leverage required for hoisting different weights, and the head and its working members are IIO readily accessible for applying a lubricant thereto by detaching the cover 7 and removing the head from the chamber 24. The lu bricant may, however, be applied through suitable holes in the casing. (Not shown.)
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim is- 1. In a hoisting device, ahousing provided With a chamber on its edge having a detachable cover, a revoluble hoisting member supported in the housing, a revoluble disk or head in said chamber provided With a shaft supported in said detachable cover, and having Working members on the face of the head engaging said revoluble member, and means for revolving the disk or head.
2. In a hoisting device, a housing provided with a chamber having a detachable cover, a revoluble hoisting member supported in the housing, a revoluble disk or head in said chamber provided With a shaft supported in said detachable cover and having Working members thereon, a ring surrounding said head and having ratchet-teeth, a paWl supported by said head and engaging said teeth, a shoe engaging the ring, and means for revolving the disk or head.
3. In a hoisting device, a revoluble hoisting member, a revoluble disk or head having Working members thereon, an internallytoothed ring surrounding said head, a pawl on said head engaging the teeth on said ring, a shoe engaging the ring, and means for revolving the disk or head.
a. In a hoisting device, a revoluble hoisting member, a revoluble disk or head having Working members engaging said hoisting member, an extension on the edge of the housing, a chain disk or Wheel supported on said extension and connected to the shaft of said head.
