Beit known that LALBERT EDWIN BRAnLEY, a'citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wilmerding, 'in the county of Alle gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inuseful Improvements in HalrPinaoiI which the following is aspeciiication, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings.

This invention hasrelation to hat-pins; and it has for its object the provision ot" novel` neans for securing the pin in position in a iat.

My invention consists, primarily, of ahatpin which carries adjacent the head a novel form ot' spring-catch having a free end which will yield readily under'pressure both in the insertion and withdrawalof the pin and which from accidental displacement.

My invention further consists in details of construction hereinafterset forth and claimed. In order to retain the pin in the hat, l form the pin with, a spring-tongue 3, which is preferably made integral with the body of the pin and has one end 4 free,`while the other end 5 is fast, being vunited to the' pin at that point. l

In the preferable form of my improvement thespring-catch 3, which is in the form of a bow or arc and which at its center is raised slgl'itly above the surfaceof the pin, is formed by cutting a sliver or tongue out of the body' of the pin by means of a suitable tool, this tongue being, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2, integrally united with the pin at one end and free at the other end, the free end 4 resting inthe slot which is formed by cutting' out the ofcourse be oi' any v trated in Fig. 5, I form the surface 7 below the tongue.

The pin is used inthe ordinary manner-*that is, it is pushed through thehat and through the hair of the wearer-and when it has been pushed through the hat the springtongue 3, being inside the hat, will prevent the pin from falling out, this tongue being' depressed and straightened outinto alinement with the body of the-pin when the pinis inserted. The pin is drawn" out by grasping the head in the hand and pulling it outwardly in the usual manner, the tongue 3 during this operation being depressed by the edge of the hole in the hat, so as to permit the pin to be pulled out by the exercise of a little force.
