Patented oef.; enligne Application med March e. 1905. serial 110,248,600,
To {L whom# may concern.-
Beit known that LALBERT EDWIN BRAnLEY, a'citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wilmerding, 'in the county of Alle gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inuseful Improvements in HalrPinaoiI which the following is aspeciiication, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention hasrelation to hat-pins; and it has for its object the provision ot" novel` neans for securing the pin in position in a iat.
My invention consists, primarily, of ahatpin which carries adjacent the head a novel form ot' spring-catch having a free end which will yield readily under'pressure both in the insertion and withdrawalof the pin and which from accidental displacement.
My invention further consists in details of construction hereinafterset forth and claimed. My invention is illustrated in the accompalgure 1 is a side yView of a hat-pin constructed vaccording to my invention. Fig. 2 is of a portion of the pin on an enlarged scale. v Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a modied form oi.' my improve.-l ment.- Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view, onan enlarged scale, in section, of a further modiication of my invention; and F igf is a transverse sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. The pin l'in my improvement is provided with the usual ornamental head 2, which may desired size and configuration. In order to retain the pin in the hat, l form the pin with, a spring-tongue 3, which is preferably made integral with the body of the pin and has one end 4 free,`while the other end 5 is fast, being vunited to the' pin at that point. l
In the preferable form of my improvement thespring-catch 3, which is in the form of a bow or arc and which at its center is raised slgl'itly above the surfaceof the pin, is formed by cutting a sliver or tongue out of the body' of the pin by means of a suitable tool, this tongue being, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2, integrally united with the pin at one end and free at the other end, the free end 4 resting inthe slot which is formed by cutting' out the ofcourse be oi' any v trated in Fig. 5, I form the surface 7 below the tongue.
tongue. After the tongue has been cut out from the body of the pin it is bent to the shape shown in the drawings or to other equivalent form and constitutes aspring-catch which when'the pin is lie inside the hat and prevent the pin from falling out or being accidentally displaced.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 instead of cut ting the tongue 3 out of the body of the pin and leavinga slot beneath the tongue, as illustongue bymaking a straight cut transversely ofthe pin near one side thereof, thus leaving the tongue`3 inserted in a hat will Y witha Hat-lower side 6 and the pin'with a ilat In the modiiin cation shown in Fig. 4, which is applicable to either of the forms of tongues shown in Figs. 2 and 3, l position the fast end of the tongue away from the head and thefreevendof the same adjacent the rear side of the head 2, the head, for the purpose of providing a socket for the free end ot' the tongue, being 'formed with a recess 8, in which the free end of the tongue will rest, so as to prevent the said free end from being engaged with the inner edge of the hole in the hat through which the pin passes. The pin is used inthe ordinary manner-*that is, it is pushed through thehat and through the hair of the wearer-and when it has been pushed through the hat the springtongue 3, being inside the hat, will prevent the pin from falling out, this tongue being' depressed and straightened outinto alinement with the body of the-pin when the pinis inserted. The pin is drawn" out by grasping the head in the hand and pulling it outwardly in the usual manner, the tongue 3 during this operation being depressed by the edge of the hole in the hat, so as to permit the pin to be pulled out by the exercise of a little force.
p What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
" 1. A hat-piu formed adjacent its head with IOO the 4vbody of the pin la.lspring-tongue which is' In testimony whereofI ax `signature.-in
