EUGENE P. MQMURTRY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SELF GOVIERNING CENTMHFUGIAL PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed F ruary 10,1905. Scrial No. 245,146.
To (6 whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE P. MoMUn'rnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Governing Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement for rendering a centrifugal pump self-governing, so as to revolve with as little friction as possible.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a centrifugal pump of the vertical type equipped with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the revoluble collar.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the casing of the pump, in which revolves the vertical shaft 2, carrying the runner 3. Said shaft revolves at the lower end upon a stepbearing 4: and at the upper end passes through a bearing 5 suitably packed, as shown at 6. Between two set-collars 7, fixedly secured to the shaft at its upper end, is retained a col lar 8, revoluble about the shaft, said collar having diametrically opposite pins 9, which engage the forked end of a lever 10, fulcrulned at 11, the other end of said lever being attached by a link 12 of the arm 13 of a valve 14 in a conduit 15, connected at one end with the space within the casing near the inletmouth 16 and at the other end with the space within the casing near the step-bearing of the shaft. This space is separated from the remaining space within the casing by the downwardly-exte nding hub-like portion 17 of the runner, which makes a running joint within the downwardly-extending portion of the casing.
The operation of the pump is as follows: When the pump is started, the shaft will run in the step-bearing until the pump is revolving at full speed, when there will be produced a suction or vacuum above the runner, causing the runner and shaft to rise. As the runner and shaft rise the end of the lever 10 connected with said shaft rises therewith and opens the valve 14:, thus opening a communication between the space above the runner and that below the runner and equalizing the pressures in said spaces. This causes the runner and shaft to again descend; but as the shaft descends it reverses the operation, closing the valve 14 and shutting off the vacuum from below the runner, which will be replaced by pressure from water leaking in from the space above the runner, again causing the runner to rise. At some point in this operation the shaft and runner will arrive at an equilibrium and will float free in the water.
I clain'1--- 1. In a self-governing centrifugal pump, in combination with the casing of the pump, a vertical shaft, a runner carried thereby provided with means for separating the part of the chamber within the casing above said means from a part below it to limit the passage of water therebetween, a pipe outside the casing connecting the part of the chamber above said means with said part below it, a valve in said pipe, and means operated by the rise and fall of the shaft for opening and closing said valve, substantially as described.
2. In a self-governing centrifugal pump, in combination with the casing of the pump, a vertical shaft therein,a runner secured thereto, provided with means for separating the part of the chamber within the casing above said means from a part below it to limit the passage of water therebetween, a pipe connecting the part of the casing above said means with said part below it, a valve in said pipe, alever connected at one end with the shaft to rise and fall therewith, an arm extending from the valve, and a link connecting said arm with the lever, \vhereby thc movement of the lever due to the rise and fall of the shaft opens and closes said valve, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
