JOHN H. HUFF, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA.
BHOODEW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed June 6, 1905. Serial No. 263,942.
To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. I'IUFF, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Fresno, county of Fresno, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brooders.
The objectof my invention is the provision ofa brooder of simple and cheap construction which will be easily portable, having hotwater tanks and means for circulating hot water therein, together with novel and improved curtains and means for securing them to the hot-water tanks and for retaining the chicks, whereby the most satisfactory heating effects and retention of the heat will be obtained.
Having the foregoing objects in view, the invention consists in those improved features and novel combinations of parts the construction of which appears more fully hereinafter, while the patentable novelty is recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete brooder; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: a perspective detail of one of the brooding-receptacles.
One or more metal tanks 1, (preferably two being em ployed,) which are by preference circular in form, are used, these tanks having depending circular flanges 3 below their hottoms 2, and to the flanges 8 are connected legs 1 for supporting the brooder.
The numeral 5 represents a heating-drum having a central tube 6, and this heatingdrum is connected by pipes 7 and 8 to the up per and lower portions of the respective hotwater tanks 1, so that the Water heated in the drum 5 circulates through the tanks 1 and through said drum 5. A suitable lamp or heater 9, which will be supported somewhat below the legs 4, has its chimney received in the tube 6. A ventilating and heat-deflecting cap 10 is fitted on the top of the heatingdrum 5 to not only give a proper draft, but also to better retain the heat. The tanks 1 tor.
1 can be conveniently filled or the water removed therefrom through pipes 12, closed by caps 13.
The brooding-receptacles comprise a circular ring frame or band 1 1 and a cloth top 15, which may be of flannel or other suitable fabric and connected to the ring or frame in any preferred manner, one desirable Way of effecting the connection being the provision of openings 16 in the ring or frame to receive a cord, wire, or thread 17, passed through the edge of the fabric 15. hen the broodingreceptacle is in position, the band frame or ring 14 fits tightly within the flange 3 and up against the bottom of the heating-tank, the
cloth top 15 being located between the band or frame and the flange 3 of the heating-tank and sagging or depending loosely, so as to properly cover the chicks.
Suitable hooks or fastening means 18 are provided on the outside of the tanks 1, to which are connected flannel or other suitable cloth strips 19, which depend and touch the surface on which the brooder is supported, and thus inclose the brooding-chamber and permit the chicks to pass in and out thereof.
hen the lamp is lighted, the heat will raise the water in drum 5 to the proper temperature and cause it to circulate freely in the heating-tanks 1, and the heat being conveyed to the bottoms 2 and flanges 3 is diffused within the brooding receptacles or chambers and properly warms the chicks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a brooder, the combination with aheating-tank having a depending flange and means for supporting the tank, of a brooding cloth or fabric, and a frame for holding parts of said brooding cloth or fabric against the inside of the flange aforesaid.
2. in a brooder, the combination with aheating-tank having a depending flange and means for supporting the tank, of a brooding cloth or fabric, a frame for holding parts of said brooding cloth or fabric against the inside of the flange aforesaid, said brooding cloth or fabric depending freely from the flange and forming the vertical walls of the broodingchamber.
3. In a brooder, the combination with a heating-tank having a depending flange, of a cloth or fabric located within said flange and form- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my ing the top of a brooding-chamber, a frame slgnature in presence of two Witnesses. fitted in and agalnst the flange and holding T the said cloth or fabric in position, said cloth JOHL HUFF' 5 or fabric depending from the flange and Witnesses:
forming the vertical Walls of the brooding- B. K. LARKINS,
chamber. 0. L. EVERTS.
