Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905..
Application filed November 23, 1904:. Serial No, 233,966.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED A. GENUNG a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SharpeningDevices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for sharpening blades of cutting instruments, such as scissors, plane-bits, and the like; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this class which will produce a keen cutting edge and will prevent the rounding of the edge in the operation of sharpening.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a plan view of my new sharpening device, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
On the base-board a is mounted the emeryblock b and the rod 0, and on the latter is mounted free to slide and to rotate thereon the carrier (Z, to which isrotatably secured the hinge-block e. The holder f is held to the hinge-block c by the pin 9 at one end, and its other end carries the clamp it, between the jaws of which the blade to be sharpened is secured by turning down the wing-nut The clamp la is rotatablymounted between the arms 2 2 of the forked free end of the holder f upon the screw-pin j, the threaded end of which is engaged by the wing-nut 7 3. By
tightening the wing-nut 7; the clamp it is secured in its ad usted positlon.
The operation of the device will be readily understood without further description.
What I claim is 1. The combination with an abrasive of a support; a carrier mounted free to slide along said support and to rotate therearound; a holder pivoted to said carrier; and a clamp mounted in said holder.
2. In a blade-sharpening device, the combination of a clamp for the work; a holder in which said clamp is adjustably mounted, said holder being secured by a universal joint to a rod along which it is free to slide; and said rod.
3. In combination in asharpeningdevice, a clamp for the work; a holder in which said clamp is adjustably mounted; means for securing said clamp in adjusted position; a hinge-block to which said holder is hinged; said hinge-block being mounted free to slide along and to rotate about its support; and said support.
4. In combinationrin a sharpening device, a base; a rod mounted thereon; acarriermounted on said rod free to slide along it and to turn about it; a hinge-block mounted free to rotate in said carrier; a holder hinged in said hingeblock; a clamp rotatably mounted in said holder; and means for securing said clamp in its adjusted position.
Dated this 16th day of November, A. D. 1904:.
FRED A. GENUNG.
